  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone want to test some film stock emulation software for RED?

Just a summary of ideas for the future development of the software:

1. 64 bit, full usage of RedRocket and the RAW controls via the SDK.
2. Create RMD of the footage processed, so we can keep the ability of continuing the use of the R3D through out the pipeline until the end. With this, instead of render into another format, the RMD will be one of the "rendering" options. Probably this will be more for gamma and color response aspects, but who knows if something can be done for the Grain.

Also, what about a profile for the Neg stock of Vision 2 5201, which I believe has an assigned ISO of 50? Very subtle grain, I think..

some good ideas here. we will probably not have many of the standard red controls, as the point of the app is an accurate representation of the film stocks. So we don't want to have features that do things like adjust contrast BEFORE the film stock, but we can definitely add features AFTER the film stock, if you get my meaning.

Nigel,

Agree; they should be available as an "AFTER" function. Just like any other current functions, which the logic is to apply the real equivalent profile of the selected stock. Then, via the provided sliders, do the final adjustments. It would be just an extension of such functions (slider and numerical).

What about the option of creation of an RMD to the files, so we do not need to transcode? Again, probably for grain is not achievable now (maybe yes), but for the other parameters, they are an extended metadata that can be removed or modified at will. This is, in my opinion, a must. We can keep the R3D intact, bring them to Resolve or any other grading system, and after rendering, the grain profile can be added.

Also, the partial use of the RedRocket ability is a drag. The rendering times are really slow, even on Work-Horse machines. This can also be enhanced by having a 64bit version. Virtually unlimited RAM is a sweet thing. Premiere Pro is an excellent example.

Sorry to keep adding to the list, but also having the ability to re-direct the image through an I/O card, such as DeckLink, will be great. For me, this will allow me to be able to use my calibrated projector to monitor changes made via FilmConvert. Just as other softwares do, such as Resolve, Final Cut, Premiere, etc. If plug-ins for such softwares are the next step on this software development, which in my opinion is the next logical step, this will be taken care of.

The reality is that this is an immediate winner. Congratulations...!

Hi Luis,

Thanks for the feedback, and keep it coming!

RMD - we could do this only if RMD can handle a 3D lookup table. I'm not sure if it can, but without the grain, we would probably not do this.

Separate screen - this is on our list, we will do it

Speed - we have the filmconvert part of the render running at 50 fps currently. However, the R3D decode is maxing out at about 1.3 fps currently. We are working on making both aspects parallel, so that we apply our look to a frame after it has decoded, and at the same time decode another frame. This should give us another 33% speed increase.
Rocket support would be nice, we will have to see what the demand is from users.

As for not having to transcode, the solution for us will be to create plugin versions. Up first will be after effects / premiere as their plugin architecture and documentation is good.
RedCine X and Davinci don't have plugin formats.
Final Cut Pro is end of life. We will look at FCPX when it supports R3D and the plugin api becomes public.

We are almost ready for a full launch, there will be some new features and a speed increase - stay tuned :)

Nigel,

Thanks for your comprehensive reply.

RMD - The 3D LUT is something that SDK should confirm and explain, I assume. This can be the BEST bet for many aspects, and the option to be more adaptive for different workflows.

Speed - It is good that this is being worked on. It is a shame about the current speed. Currently, it is really slow. Again, would a 64bit version of the software help? I do have 24 GB of RAM, so that should make a significant speed improvement.

Previous DaVinci versions in the past have had some sort of "plug-ins", so this should not be a "reinventing-the-wheel" thing for them. Just to implement it on future revisions.

At one point for NAB 2009 or 2010, RedCine-X had a module to be used for third party plugins, such as Magic Bullet, etc. It got drop due to licensing issues, I think. So, they have such structure developed, but not active. This may be a good area to explore.

Premiere will be my preferred plug-in. The software runs R3D real time without render, and is a 64 bit software. I mentioned FinalCut, but I would recommend not to loose your time there. Serious small and big houses are migrating out of it. FCX, so far, is a joke for professionals. So, if a dramatic development is not seen soon (XML, EDL, etc.), it will become a glorified iMovie for household consumption. There is nothing wrong there, but for us...

I have done tons of beta testing. So, if you are "almost ready for a full launch", keep us in mind.

High Regards,
