The Convergent Design nanoFlash recorder seems like a very good and affordable option as a video assist recorder/playback machine, anyone use this with their RED yet?

More info:
http://www.convergent-design.com/CD_Products_nanoFlash.htm

Looks like a good way of getting rid of any downconverting once and for all.

Of course not.

It is still not RED certified...(???)

Why should somebody with R1 risk about USD 3.000 just to try out???

It records and plays back both HD-SDI and HDMI video (apparently), why would it need to be certified?

I think it looks very promising, and there might be someone on here who has tried it out, and I would love to hear from them.

BTW:I am so tired of requests for downconverters to old crappy SD equipment, and want to support HD-SDI record/playback.

Charge it to your clients!

ki pro might be a better solution these days. more robust codec, quick and easy offline or even finishing solution for broadcast turn around recording straight to pro res HQ. also kind of pricey. but time is money.

Thank you Tom, I will look into it.

I am not so much into this for codecs and finishing away from R3D files, I am looking into an onset preview/playback solution. (so the DP can keep on working wile the director/clients looks at footage on monitor and discusses)

Thank you for your inputs.

Eirik,

let them WATCH through these two examples that have realtime R3D using RR

RED1 + Leica-R 60mm f/2.8 Macro + RED-Raid 320GB + RED Rocket™™™™™™™™ + Magma ExpressPro + HP DreamColor + MacBook Pro 17" + ROCKETcineX

or

Fire footage shot on RED1 with Leica 60mm Macro f/2.8 plays in realtime 4K scaled @1080p using MBP 17",
Magma ExpressPro, RED Rocket™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™, ROCKETcineX and Panasonic TX-P46GW10 Neo PDP G12 Full HD Toughpanel LCD.

I use an AJA I/O. Send a 720 feed from the camera to the AJA and use log and capture in FCP to ingest the footage. Playback from the laptop for onset review of the footage.

I just discovered this last night, considering it as an option for recording 4:2:2 with an EX3. However, it only records 8-bit.

I appreciate all answers.

I am looking for a video assist type thing, easy to use for non-DIT type people, Like a VHS machine - just HD and not with a tape inside....

Although recording to an MBP is a wonderful thing, it involves too much software and too many cables and boxes. (I have all that, but I need an easy onset solution for busy people)

As far as I understand the nanoFlash offers record/playback in a small convinient box that will draw power from the Vlock on my monitor, it accepts HD-SDI in and sends that HD-SDI (with sound embedded) on to the monitor, so the video village people can play and discuss.

As an added bonus, it records to CF cards (and we already use many of those) and if someone really wants to play around: it´s FCP compatible so the option is there to play around with footage.

And I want a simple, reliable, "cheap", clutterless soulution, with no macbooks.. etc. etc.

I would LOVE to hear from anyone who has seen the thing, or tried it: the nanoFlash that is!

I appreciate your fine demonstrations of the RR™ Sanjin, but this is exactly what I don´t want to give my clients in this situation(Cable clutter) For post use, the RR... eh... rocks!

The cable clutter is from my studio room that was at the moment of that shot in a big mess of making order, terribly sorry...

My goodness, Sanjin, nice set up and floors, but you could use some investment in cable wrangling! :coolgleamA: hee hee

LOL, no problem, it´s a lovely setup, but not what my clients wants on a busy set.

In a day or two I'll do it again to "please" our interior design oriented Red users and will be without that cable clutter "bad effect" :cheers2:

Could you iron the curtains and add a coat of oil on the floor, for that glossy look that we crave so much?

was only kidding Sanjin! Our suite looks EXACTLY the same behind the desk... :001_tt2: just no time for cable design!

Hey Guys,

The thing is, on a busy set you need to satisfy the needs of the client as well as anything else. A perfect picture that takes a few minutes to play, or 30 secs, just doesn't cut it. Vid Assts come and go and you need buttons! Stop, go, that sort of thing, so everyone can see what it is and why it is/is not doing what it does. Remotes, software etc does not do it. Press play and watch is the only way. Then, put it in a BIG box! This works! Cables and clutter? No way.

Same thing, but HD, with a big green button for play and a big red button for record, put it in a large flight case with a monitor ready to view and you are ready to rock!
