  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone upgrade their Red Epic W to the Helium and wish you went Gemini route?

Any regrets from anyone on this upgrade path?

Unlikely considering for many epic-w owners the only handicap was the frame rates in 8K and 7K. If you enjoyed shooting it in the first place you may have always wanted the extra fps you would have gone up that way. Maybe better to ask if you had Epic-W and switched to Gemini are you regretting it? Just a thought. For me it makes absolutely zero sense to upgrade Epic-W helium to gemini. I would go up to full DSMC2 using Helium. If I wanted Gemini I better bust my ass make some cash and save up and buy a full second Gemini brain.

I decided to go Gemini from Epic-W and couldn't be happier. One thing that no one seems to mention is that rolling shutter is WAY better than on Epic-W. I'm not sure if that is something that is also addressed in the Helium DSMC2 upgrade but that alone is significant. Image quality is great and low light is exceptional.

This is interesting regarding rolling shutter. Are we talking because of the dimension height of the sensor? My understanding is that if I was using same height dimension mm of sensor why should sensor readout be different? I understand if epic-w vs gemini dsmc2 could be better (considering the dsmc2 extra guts) but helium dsmc2 vs gemini dsmc2? mm x mm curious if still case

I just wasn't happy with my Red Epic W low light capabilities. Just way too much noise.

It's easier to readout less pixel lines. Helium got more vertical resolution and is for that reason more likely to have more of a rolling shutter.

I am also happy with the 8k 60 fps upgrade. Also for shooting wide at 75 fps - there is less vertical lines and thus less skew. Of note, the Gemini has more of its pixels vertically which slightly offsets the advantage if the total height is used but more importantly for wide screen there are way less pixels in play for Gemini 5k WS (only 11 megapixels) and only 39% the resolution of Helium (8kWS) which has 28 megapixels.

I love the image I get from my Helium, so upgrading to DSMC2 (from Epic-W) was a no-brainer for me. Very glad I did.

I went DSMC2 keeping Helium. Love this camera, love the sensor. I don’t really know what I need that I can’t get from this camera. Pretty fortunate to get to shoot on it whenever I want.

I really miss nothing sinds I moved from all the other cameras I shot on. Its atually the best feature I could ever imagine. RAW photo quality in motion picture. Did the upgrade and I don´t look backt to something else.

8K 60fps, HDR, RAW. Its low light performance is light years ahead of my old red Mysterium-X, and Dragon sensors. If you have had experience with those camera's then you know DSMC2 is a huge upgrade in low light. I am good for the next 5-10years no doubt, I still feel like that with my mysterium X. I can use 4k 120fps or 5K 96FPS FULL FRAME all day if 60fps doesnt cut it. No one is asking for Super slow mo 8K...yet.

I love the DSMC2 Helium. It’s what I was wishing for since a few weeks after I got the Epic W. Love finally having the fully capable camera. The only thing missing is the carbon fiber body which isn’t a huge deal at all. It would be nice to be a little lighter, but not necessary at all. It’s already super light compared to the first gen DSMC. My only regret is that I couldn’t afford the Monstro. Lol
