  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone seen footage from sony F65?

But this ignores the fact that Sony had been selling 2/3" 1080p cameras for a quarter of a million dollars and sticking indy shootes with 1/3 chips in order to "protect" their massively overpriced 2/3 1080p cameras. If you think Sony would have released a S35 4K camera right now for under $10K without Jim Jannard and Red pressuring them, I think you would have a very difficult time supporting that assertion, based on facts and evidence.

If Sony had continued to release 2/3" cameras then the 5D MK3 would have destroyed their market. Seeing as their cameras cost more and have less features than a RED... I can only conclude that they still don't see RED as a direct competitor.

Their corporate culture didn't allow them to see RED as a competitor. A good 30 years of 'owning' the broadcast market tends to breed a certain attitude.

There are huge changes about to happen at Sony. The losses are not sustainable.

So so correct...

SONY have been ripping us off blind for years... Ive spent a fortune with them.

Thanks RED for setting real world prices and bringing these giants down to normality.

Your probably right... I see the CANON 5D causing the biggest change for digital video large chip pricing... RED bought us 4k realistic pricing. Both companies have really caused huge up evil...
Its been a expensive lesson for SONY. And the faithful (like me) have walked over to people that talk the same tune.

I wonder if all the burnt out highlights were on purpose... ?

I'm glad that Jim's hobby is irritating these other camera companies!
I'm sure they just LOVE it.

The Sony F65 exists today at its current price because of one person: Jim Jannard

The Sony S35 FS700 4K camera for under $10,000 exists today because of one person: Jim Jannard

If you think these statements are untrue, I would be happy to enter in a formal debate on the topic here on a new thread. There is a deep, documented, clear history of Sony's anti-filmmaker business practices when it comes to their prosumer and digital cinema cameras, and how they have suddenly begun to change those practices once a certain retired sunglasses mogul turned up out of nowhere and sold 10,000 4K digital RAW cinema cameras, causing the floor to drop out from under the board room at Sony Cine Alta . Why do you think this F65 was rushed into production?

My internal naration:

"Behold the perfect female human specimen"
...
"Behold the perfect male human specimen"
...
"Behold the... perfect... hipster douchebag specimen?" (My apologies to the actor)

Its pretty amazing that the cost of the F65 without external recorder is now less money than their top of the line XD HD Cam 3 years ago..... & XD was a crap format !

P.S. Gavin please keep up.......douche bag dancing is so in right now .

I think SONY cannot afford to compete with RED this year, maybe in 2015.

Just announced:

TOKYO (MarketWatch) -- Sony Corp. said Tuesday it now expects to book an even bigger-than-expected net loss of $6.4 billion for the just-ended business year, a stark reminder of the pressure the entertainment and electronics conglomerate is under, battered by the yen's strength and stiff competition from rivals.

In yen terms, the company now estimates a net loss of Y520 billion, the fourth straight year of net loss, compared with an estimated loss of Y220 billion in its previous outlook in February.

Ouch. Unless the web compression really botched this video, or man those highlights are brutal on the F65??? On a side note, what's Lou Ferrigno doing in this video?

I highly doubt any highlights were clipped in camera. At 800iso you should have about 7 stops of highlight headroom over middle grey. You can't even see it all on a Rec 709 monitor. The readout on the side of the F65 tells you how much headroom you have in stops. Then you push a preview button to shift the dynamic range into the highlights or shadows to check if you're clipping or not. It's a very easy system to expose for.

I saw the SONY demo film, here in Los Angeles at last years Cinegear. In Paramount studios finest theater on a 4K projector. In a word it looked like 3D. Only without the glasses. Of course the film was shot with the new Cinelux Leica lenses and they really helped. 3D reality without the glasses. It was a beautiful picture. When this chip gets into a smaller form factor, we can all stop talking about all this tech B.S. and get back to the art and craft of filmmaking.

I think we can all agree that we are happy the Sony F65 has arrived. Even Jim has said as much.

The resolution potential dazzles me. I love RAW 16-bit at 3:1 compression. Perfect. Now give me a smaller camera and overcrank.

Ouch... Well I think they make good TV's still.... :)
I think all that over charging for the last 20 years has got them all cashed up and can handle multi billion dollar hits... for a little while. But for how much longer is the question. We all know the JAP YEN is all fake and mysterious anyway... Know body knows whats going on with the JAP economy. I'm not sure if I'd put money into expensive Sony products for a while, especially reading that article above... Sounds like another KODAK moment.

I remember 5 years ago (or more) when RED ONES got slammed silly for hot hi lights... But I never had the problem once back then. I just never over exposed it...
Remember when 4k was a myth... and RED was a joke around NAB, and people were saying that this RED mob is ripping people off with deposits and 4k in a camera that size was impossible.

Sony All of a sudden 5 years later catchup with a camera 4 times the size and twice the price and all of a sudden its the KING...? and the dust collecting F35 was 5x more again... obsolete pretty much 6 months after it came out.

I'm little lost... or am I blinded by logic. ?

Next year JVC, Canon or google??? will bring out a 6k camera and it will be the new KING (supposedly)... but until someone brings out a camera that kicks RED EPIC arse in price / performance and size... only then will l take notice. But the F65 isn't it. I can guarantee that camera will be over the hill and collecting dust like the F35 in 12 months, when Sony, JVC, Canon or google bring out a completely new camera next year ... While my upgradeable chipped little EPIC is seeing its 3rd and 4th year... and maybe longer if RED stick to there upgrade promises.

But I will admit... the image out of the F65 is very good. But so is the EPIC's... But everything else about the F65 you can have... It just feels all so 2 years ago...

Is it just me or was it extremely noisy in the warehouse and in the skin tones on the beach stuff? The forest with the female had the best look overall. The beach was great but a bit noisy. Might just be vimeo compression. I still can't believe there isn't more f65 footage out there....

Well I think it just started shipping so I'm not surprised.

I think the F65 will be around for a while. The F35 died so quickly because Sony was convinced that CCD tech was better than CMOS but the industry disagreed so the had to scrap that camera and develop a CMOS cam that allowed for higher pixel counts. The F35 did produce a really nice picture though. Anyways, there are two major big budget Hollywood productions underway using the cam and I know of two or three others in pre production so I think the camera will be around for some time and will be a popular rental item. Look at the Alexa. Everyone said it would fail and it seems like it is getting used on all kinds of productions. I think the Epic will be used more because of it's flexibility and lower cost but Sony will certainly sell quite a few of the F65's and I hear that most if not all of the initial production run is already sold to rental houses around the world.

I don't understand how anyone could think that the F35 was in any way a failure, was it not used on Tron Legacy and Transformers Dark side of the moon? Was it not used to film Series 5 to 6 of Doctor Who? Was it not used at least as widely as it's cousin the Panavision Genesis which is I believe still being used today? I'm sure someone out there is shooting on Genesis I think Spartacus is shooting Genesis.

Sure. They are also offered for extremely cheap at times...

In comparison to the scarletteers fright for devaluation... That is nooooooooothing... :) Even if one started to give the Scarlets out for free...

The F65, alongside the Epic looks like it is part of the first crop of real 3rd gen digital cinemacameras, though.
