anyone point me in the right direction to info regarding compression 8:1 vs 12:1 ??

Under tungsten I always go for 6:1 or lower. For daylight 5600k, 8:1 or 10:1 usually are ok unless you have vegetation or similar high frequency details.

I've noticed the sensor really does take a hit when balancing to 3200, sucks that I just bough a bunch of tungsten lights... ugh lol

I haven't tested it, but aren't the goal posts tied to the histogram - i.e. they also are ISO-dependent? I tend to use the stop lights and the Exposure check, which are both always raw.

No they are not. Goal posts and stop lights are raw. Trust them.
