  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone has used only REDCINE X Pro for post?

As the title suggests, I'm asking if anyone has been able to get RED footage out the door (from home movies to professional) with satisfactory results? I'm more especially interested in Dragon footage but would like to know how MX footage works for anyone as well.

I've been using Adobe CC on a 1 year trial offered to registered users and it is about to end. And since I do not foresee any big projects anytime soon, the monthly payment would be for something seldom needed.

I would just like to know if I can confidently get a useable edit and grade for any smaller ones that come up and would appreciate hearing anyone's experience using REDCINE as their NLE.

redcine doesn't have full blown NLE tools, resolve 11 does though. i think you can get by fairly well these days between the two of them...or buy a software you own for life, like fcpx...

RCX as an NLE is pretty much a no-go

Resolve 11 could possibly be better. Looking at it as an all-in-one tool, but haven't landed.

I must look at FCP-X again...

I guess you could use Lightworks as NLE, and Resolve as exporting tool (because free version of lwks is limited to 720p mp4).

In terms of editing, no.

However, in terms of dailies and final color, yes. Exporting and importing into an NLE, yep. Working straight in the NLE with .R3D, yep.

I am finding though I am working more and more in Redcine-X Pro.

Especially now that things are so fast with GPU debayer acceleration.

I heavily utilize the Adobe workflow though.

I think what Adobe Premier needs (and correct me if I'm wrong and it does have it and I am dumb - as so often the case) is an auto-.R3Dupdate so footage edited in a timeline will refresh every 5 minutes or so with any changes that have been made in Redcine X.

Using RCX for short corporate work

Using RCX for short corporate work

Tonight I have just left a Sydney TV station where a friend colour grades a locally famous, long running Soap Opera using Da Vinci Resolve 10 with a Tangent Wave controller. I was duly impressed with how Resolve is well suited for coping with long form TV work, and of course Features.

My last experience in Telecine was back in the 90's when I used to grade television commercials as a Director. in those days it was 35mm motion picture and a Ursa Gold. my how times have changed! Back then there was always a Colourist and an assistant. Now the Colourist is their own assistant. In the same way today many Cameramen are now their own Sound guy or gal.

One take out I got from the experience tonight was the value of having a Games controller set up with macros and quick keys for oft needed shortcuts. I can see that is more valuable than a fancy ball controller in many ways.

To date I have been using RCX for grading short web release corporates. It works and I appreciate it's free, but to me where it falls down is when you you want do anything other than a short piece with fairly generic grading decisions.

It works no question. But..... there's a lot of bells and whistles in Resolve in the form of selection mattes (qualifiers) and power windows . The ability to propagate grades across a number of shots that makes It a compelling solution for speedy workflows.

I have another friend who grades commercials and major feature films on a Baselight system and he swears by that. The head of marketing wants me to look at Speedgrade as that's what is offered at REDUCATION, apparently?

Going for a free or cheap Grading solution is one thing but you really need to spend money on a good broadcast monitor, scopes and the right lighting in your grading environment.

That's what I am looking at present.

Do you use Lightworks?
Happy?

I guess EDL to resolve, so no re-timing or re-framing passes through?
I'm starting to use Lightworks more often after the mac version appears, it's getting better now, unlike those early Windows beta, but ironically I'm doing less editing now.

Yes, EDL to Resolve. No retiming, but you can reframe in Resolve, right?

Great suggestions guys... question... how is REDCINE when it comes to export? That is, for 1080p ranging up to 4k?

And would it be possible to work in Lightworks or Resolve 11 Lite, and re-import into REDCINE before outputting?

These are things I really should have learned a long time ago but was content to work in Adobe and so paid no attention to alternate workflows.
