  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone else feeling a bit uneasy?

Nice find Kenneth! This should calm peoples nerves some ;) Eric did a great job with this. Should probably throw that link up in the shot on RAVEN thread as well so others do not miss it.

Case closed as far as I'm concerned! red would never compromise on their reputation..they take pride in the quality of their dragon sensor & would not want a crippled version of it being presented as dragon footage.

With so much critique of the cameras ability, with any of todays cameras, particularly RED, the weakest link will probably be the operator. Noise is controllable, colors closer to fidelity, exposure range, latiitude is all there. Has been since 2007. If a publicly posted clip looks pedestrian and ordinary, I generally assume the result is the operator, not the camera.

Really, really appealing craftsmanship, pro-level work is still the function of good photography -- composition, lighting and exposure.

You can't judge a camera without taking into consideration the lighting conditions.
As they used to say in the computer industry "Garbage In -> Garbage Out"

The light going into the camera directly affects the images and that includes colour reproduction and other factors.
A lot of everyday light sources can have poor colour output. Some Flo's and LED's especially have gaps in their colour spectrum.
What I mean by that is that light is a spectrum containing lots of colours. Some kinds of lighting are literally missing those colours. You can try and fix things in the grade by shifting the strength of colours around but if the colour is basically absent then you can't turn up the volume for that colour really. If the colour isn't there to start with then it doesn't matter how good the camera is at reproducing it.

The gym footage is just shot under whatever cheap and nasty random lighting they have in the gym which might even be from a mix of colour sources which can make it hard to judge how the camera reacts to light outside of those weird conditions. To judge the colour from a camera you are better looking at the results in full spectrum conditions such as a daylight exterior where the light is coming from the sun (which is a really great quality light source BTW and very economical, I can really recommend it!)

Having said that if you want to know how the camera reacts in the average randomly lit gym then that might be a good test.

I'm dealing with a lot in my life right now so I'm not too up on Scarlet-W vs Raven. In fact I was a bit shocked at the BSC show to find that it suddenly wasn't all about the Raven anymore! I'm assuming one of the big differences is the resolution which could affect the look a little although none of the Red cameras are exactly short of resolution. Another might be avilability of lenses...

...but the light you start with will always be the biggest factor.

One big advantage of the Raven is it has a really great name. Don't forget that if you are working on a narrative project with your raven you are pluging directly into that narrative tradition that began with such great names as Edgar Allan Poe. Note how the first video to showcase the Raven plugs directly into that gothic horror tradition.

The Scarlet-W on the other hand... well what does that W stand for?

Scarlet-W probably IS better for shooting in gyms and bedrooms and people on sofas.

Unique observation. '-)

The tint was taken out. Thats a grade, allbeit a mild one.

Again - an R3D tells the whole picture.

For shooting in a gym wifh floros and no lighting...I thought it looked pretty good...

If we're going to get pedantic, technically that would be color correction, not a grade. ;)

I agree. For what it was it looked fine. I don't think anyone was trying to masquerade that footage around like it was lit. There are a few good examples of what the camera can do. If that footage worried anyone, make sure to cancel your order, especially if you're before midnight on 9/24.

I don't actually understand why people are comparing Scarlet-W footage with the Raven footage... every camera in Reds lineup has the same got darn sensor in them. It's the same sensor with the same R3D technology. There's no point comparing. Raven shoots a 4.5K cropped Dragon sensor with a bit more compression and a standard OLPF, that's it. Want to see how the Raven looks? Look at some Weapon or Dragon footage, especially shot at 4 or 4.5K.

Here's another video from the Raven. A bit overly graded in some shots. Some skin tones that differ between cuts etc. but that has nothing to do with the camera though and it looks good.... and yeah, there's "gym" shots in it haha :tongue_smilie:

The potential that this camera has for independent filmmakers is so underrated that it's ridiculous.
