  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When I am viewing recordings on the Red DSMC2 7" monitor, I get pink hues on areas that are white or hi key. When viewing the recording on the computer screen you won't see it only on the monitor. Anyone else getting this? Red said they are aware and there's no plans on fixing this.

This is what Red wrote back.

This is a characteristic of HELIUM cameras and is due to a limitation through the monitor path. This is working within specification, and therefore I do not see any plans on a fix. The HELIUM is much more sensitive and requires additional processing that go beyond the spectrum of what the monitor path of the camera can handle with a live image on our monitors. Our engineers are aware but have mentioned that this is to be expected with HELIUM cameras.

Kind of stinks spending this kind of money to get hardware that is like this. Don't like the fact if I show my client payback they will see that gross pink pastel color on all the white areas

Wow. I would love to hear someone else at Red confirm that, as I really want to believe the rep misspoke. I've been going to bat for Red a lot for the last year or so, talking about how they're doing so much better than they used to; they're really stepping up their game in terms of usability and tech support. And I really hope that's true. But this.... CLASSIC. CLASSIC RED response.

User: "Hey, I have this weird problem that I've never experienced with any other camera."
Red: "Oh, you can expect that. It's because our cameras are just SO good and SO accurate that this weird stuff happens--which is how it should be."

WHAT?

I thought for sure I had seen Graeme say something about it being resolved in future firmware. So I really want to believe that instead.

How is the DSMC2 monitor calibrated? Can you believe what you see? Does the problem show up on scopes?

Only shows up on the red monitor. Viewing the media off the red it does not show.

It's not a calibration issue. It's a hardware issue according to red.

If it's only in that particular monitor, then I would just use that monitor for focus and framing only. Buy a calibrated display and use that on the set to judge brightness and contrast and a general look, which is generally what DITs do. (Note that you'll have to use this display in an optimum environment, which may involve a tent shielded from stray light.)

I think they mean as long as the clip is played back from camera and not just on the touch screen. Out of gamut stuff.
