I was wondering if anyone is planning on cancelling their RED one to get the scarlet, as it seems for the value the Scarlet is a superior deal? I could be wrong, but it if is under 3 grand, I may re-think spending 17 grand without a lens?

Also, is there anyone who currently has a RED one that is upset considering how close in features the scarlet will be and how far in price it is.

Seems to me like the two cameras are complimentary. I will most probably get Scarlet when it becomes available to use as a "B" or crash cam.
One important thing to consider if you're thinking of cancelling your Red one reservation is that Scarlet is apparently barely a prototype right now and although it says early 2009 on red.com, it also says SPECIFICATIONS, DELIVERY DATES AND DESIGN ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE... COUNT ON IT. We know what that means!

I may have been tempted to swap my Red reservation for an early Scarlet (if that would have been an option) if they had been available for sale now. However, I was figuring under $7,000 not under $3,000 (as I read?). I'm sure the old adage applies, "you get what you pay for" and I'm not willing to compromise to the tune of 1/6. Not saying Scarlet will be 1/6th the camera and value as the Red One, but all things considered, it probably will be.

As it stands, and considering the generous EPIC upgrade path, I cannot think of a bigger mistake than canceling an existing Red reservation. Once the industry truly understands the ramifications of the EPIC, Red reservations will take off again simply because of the upgrade path policy. (This is probably part of the plan btw).

My advice is to get in on the ground floor (perhaps 2nd floor) while you can. Get experience with Red, R3D, the software, the workflow and etc now. Experience simply cannot be bought and it will take 12 months (at least) to master this technology once you have it in your hands. Also, rest assured that either the Scarlet will have severe limitations or Red will upgrade and improve the Red One at no charge to maintain the price/value proposition. Red is not going to cannibalize their core product. Keep in mind that Scarlet will probably have a one-year backlog on orders once it does ship and Red will probably give some sort of queue advantage to current Red owners and reservation holders.

I appreciate your speculation Shooter, unfortunatly speculation the problem. We all speculated the Scarlet would be 7 grand and now it is not. So to speculate that the camera will anything less then what it claims to be (1/6th camera etc..) is the same flawed logic. I can understand professionals, and rental houses not worrying, but I am a poor indy filmmaker that was going out on a branch to get the red one, basically a massive loan, and my life savings, with the intention of renting it to other student. The scarlet will (speculating) destroy my market!!

I understand your position 'fromwimptopimp', and it may be a better idea for you to get a Scarlet. Altough, as Shooter says, it's a whole different world. Scarlet will be a great B-Cam or A-cam for smaller budget, but very limited and less versatile for pro use (ie fixed lens it seems)... But 3K for 3k$, that's great theater broadcast quality value for the price! For me, Scarlet is the product that will compete with the HVX and other small HD cams used by low budget indie filmakers to make features that get back on film... Red One is a real movie cam with all the credibility and possibilities of 35. I can't imagine a big production and cam crew shooting on Scarlet. I think Scarlet is to Red One what FX1 is to F900... In a Red way...

I see what you are saying Lewis, but I don't get the comparison. It is 3k, so therefore higher quality then a f900 (I think). It can seriously ramp speed so much better then an hvx, which I don't think can ramp the same way...and also did I mention 3k....uh...isn't that 1k more then the theatre....isn't that 1k more then most Red one users are using anyway? saying scarlet is comparable to an hvx is like like saying a corvette is comparable to a solstice. The only problem with the scarlet is that it has a fixed lens (as far as I can tell). If you compare the scarlet with the red one side by side it looks more like a suped up version of the hvx (fixed lens) vs. the cannon xlh1 (changable lens). If I am missing something please tell me....

ps..I might take you up on that offer, if the price is right. I am going to NAB tommorow to make sure I am not crazy.

Cancelling?

Cancelling?

Anyone want to cancel their Red Cam? Please let me know, Perhaps you want to change your order to Scarlet or whatever. I will reimburse your deposit as long as red is ok with the transaction change.

Maybe the best solution would be to buy your Red One now (assuming you can afford it) and eventually sell it in a year or so when Scarlet becomes available and if it proves to be sufficient for your needs.

This is exactly what I'm planing to do.

Yes, it seems like a decent idea. It just sucks that one year from now, some punk kid can spend one tenth of what I did and basically have the same quality image.

Sorry to say: But your businessplan was naiv from the very first day.

Get a Scarlet. I don't see the problem? You didn't even place your order yet?!

And keep in mind one thing: I don't see Scarlet as a professionnal product. One that can deliver high quality (3K) sure, but no lens mount... It's gonna be a camcorder... Great B-cam as well, but not an Industry standard main tool... I see it as a 3K HVX... That's the market...

Blunt opinion... Any corrections appreciated Jim...

Plus, it seems pretty clear that the RED One will be getting a sizeable update in 2009, as well. No question, I'll be buying a Scarlet, but it won't be replacing my One.

Simple no.
As i told in an other thread we just ordered in our Asia subbranch an other RED a few days Before the NAB. I def do not regret this.
With Red´s super deal for cashback when bying a Epic there is no Risk anymore.
For me Scarlet is out of my antenna. I will think about in 9 month as an add on. Same Epic something for 2009.
It was a nice game , I really enjoy, the red team play with us, kidding us with Scarlet and nuke with Epic. But now is time to go back to buisness.

It's a bad idea to over extend yourself financially. If you get a big loan and are always working to pay it off, when are you going to have time to make movies?

Stu at www.prolost.com has a cool article about "should I buy a red"
just search for "red" and you'll find it.
