  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any way to modernize Lomo Square Front lenses?

Let's make this happen!!!

Please spread the word to all shooters you know who have a set of these puppies and let's get a good amount of sets for a group buy!

Also, If anyone has any great ideas about design elements they are looking for I will add them to this list if they aren't dumb ;-) Currently I have asked for -

Maintaining small size over uniformity - ie don't make all the fronts giant to match the 35mm, if the 35mm is bigger so be it.

I asked that if anything could be done to improve close focus, that would be great. I don't have high hopes for that, I suspect the soviet engineers made the best compromises they could in that regard.

Make the 80mm work with a 2x (or hell a 1.4x) extender - that should be pretty easy.

I asked for a second focus scale for a +1 diopter on the 50mm and 80mm

If anyone has a great idea, let me know.

Is it possible to get part of it, even my square front are NAS two part lenses?

I will ask. They have my lenses now and will begin tearing them a apart soon. My understanding is that the optics on the 2 piece are the same, it's just a different housing, since they are being completely rehoused anyway, I suspect that would be fine. You would need a complete set of optics for both the 50 and 80 however.

Will do Craig. Thanks. Last check in was that they were very excited, positive, and looking forward to starting the project. They even said they thought they could improve on close focus. They are busy though, so it's going to take a while.

Cheers,

I am in for sure.

I'd like to see a snap on hood with holders for 4x5.6 filters available for the set so you could run without a mattebox.
I printed one up for a recent job. Works great but because it is plastic it snaps with a good pull. Had to get a bunch 3d printed to cover myself.
One for the 35 and one for the 50/80.

The mold clips on to the back of the head of the lens to stay in place. Holds 2 4x5.6 filters

If you'd like to file so you can print it too it let me know I'd I'll email it you. Works great. Just not super strong so yoiu have to be careful putting it on and pulling it off the lens.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that the finished lenses will have round fronts with something like a standard 95mm front so that clip on matte boxes will work. If not, I'll be cncing up a clip on for whatever they are ;-)

Not yet, this is going to take a while. I'm leaving town to do a movie in a couple days, I'll give them a shout in when I get back in a month or so to check in. They have been pretty proactive about letting me know whats up, they are busy now. At last count there are about 10 people interested in this, if that number goes up, I am inclined to think that their interest will too ;-)
