  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any update as to if there will be an Anamorphic mode?

Just seeing if anyone has heard a peep about ana mode on Scarlet. Im wondering if it ends up only being on Epic as a way of differentiating.

It was originally mentioned for Scarlet, but I would also like to hear from RED if they are still planning
to implement it.

Yes please, anyone more info about it? It was mentioned on the site when i bought mine and i'm planning shoot a lot if not only anamorphic with it.

I did notice they no longer mention anamorphic glass on the scarlet product description page... They once did so this may be a bad sign for us

What does anamorphic mode mean? Just a way of squishing the image to the correct aspect ration on your monitors while you're working? I pretty much got used to looking at a stretched image on my 7D while using my Iscorama. Unless I'm missing something, it should just be a firmware thing right?

Correct but since the anamorphic mode only use a smaller part of the sensor you could save a lot on data rate or up your compression...

I do not want to say this since it will be such a long thread but basically scarlet is able to take the data rate for what is called 5k Ana on the epic. It might have problem scaling the picture to the screen but since the data captured is less then 4k when shooting in this mode the scarlet should have no problem to capture.

So I guess it's more than the actual hardware that limits the scarlet, In this case it seems very much likely to be a market differentiation thingy.

It'd be great to hear from RED. My main project for the Scarlet, when it finally arrives, is all to be shot anamorphic. It would be very disappointing if there is no anamorphic mode- back to cropping and gauging the framing.

Everything I've shot with my Iscorama fills the frame (on an APS-C sensor) and then stretch outwards on the computer. Why would this use less of the sensor? It should technically use the same amount of sensor space shouldn't it? It's not like an in-camera crop would work. Cuz then when you stretched that out, it'd be even more wide than you'd want. Unless the Epic is going to process the anamorphic effect in-camera and somehow save pixels and make it more data friendly. But I haven't read anything about it too much. I'm not sure how much I'll use my Iscorama on the Scarlet, but having the option to make it viewable in-camera sounds pretty rad.

Epic 5k Ana mode does crop the sensor so you get a picture out that when it's stretched or squeezed by a factor of 2 has a 1.40 in aspect ratio. So then yes it saves pixels and does not have to capture as much data as when shooting full sensor.

In other words (have not tried it just yet) we should be able to shoot higher frame rates at 5k Ana then 4k with the epic and that also means that 5k Ana 25fps is less data than what the scarlet can handle.

And the epic also give a HDSDI output with a 1.4 picture. to do so I guess it rips out every second row of pixels or it might actually be able to down sample the output correctly. The scarlet should at least be able to record the 5kAna but maybe not do the realtime squeeze. but thats something for RED people to reply on.

Wow, well if someone makes 5K work in anamorphic mode, that'd be RAD! My guess is that we probably won't see this feature for a while, if ever.

It wouldn't be 5K... Getting a working Anamorphic mode would be more about making a more square aspect ratio. Going to 5K would do the opposite. What we'd be more likely to see would be a full sensor height (2700 pixels) at a 1.2-1.4:1 aspect ratio.

I believe Red cares about their customers too deeply to say "sorry Scarlet folks, anamorphic is Kubrick territory, buy an Epic."

They have to work pretty damn hard to get every mode they have stable on this small beast of a camera, so the anamorphic is probably coming--perhaps with it HDRx at 24, middle of the road frame rates (18, 20, 26, etc), timelapse...

+ 1
I love to see 5K Anamorphic (and probably 4K too) and time- lapse option on the Scarlet.
That would be my early Christmas gift.
