  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any truth to this?

a friend of mine just came back from B&H in nyc, and asked me "if i'd heard about the dead pixels in red ones". I searched the forums but nothing.

Was that guy just talking smack?

I hadn't heard anything of the sort. He said he was talking to someone who was very knowledgeable.

Huh ?

I've never heard of anyone receiving a single dead pixel.

Jim has stated that "he wouldn't put up with dead pixels, and neither should we".

I'd assume that if somebody 'did' recieve a dead pixel on their camera (which I don't think I've ever heard of), then Red would likely replace the sensor..

People love to throw all kinds of bogus information around. It hard enough sorting through all of the posts here to pull out the actual nuggets.

If someone had a dead pixel, don't you think that would have been posted and talked about for weeks here?

No dead pixels ever reported on a RED ONE that we have heard of.

Jim

Thats what I thought. I'll forward this to everyone at work.

and what's the greatest about red and reduser forum...

...that was from the top horse's mouth. can't get any more authoritative then that!

Maybe it's been discussed before. How does RED manage this ? I thought dead pixels were a normal part if digital imaging. Is there some kind of automated masking routine ?

of course B&H would bad mouth the REDONE... they don't sell the camera and don't make any $$ from RED (and i don't think they ever will being that the cameras are only sold by RED)....
...and obviously, the guy wanted to sell a camera that was for sale in his store and therefore making money for B&H and for himself.

We have the best complainers in the world here. It's an important part of Red's development!

and reading all about the Red, (warts and all) on here... actually makes me more confident, because I KNOW what it's problems are... but I also know that there are a lot of people out there putting the Red through the ringer and letting us know what the issues are...that I can confidently deduce what is NOT wrong... :)

Well..... Let me tell you what happened to me today.

I called B & H to order the JVC DTV-17 field monitor today. I got someone who seemed fairly cool at first. I started asking about cables that would hook from the back of the JVC to the RED camera and he abruptly said, "Oh, We don't support RED." Then he turned and became very cold to me. He ended up sending me to someone else in the Computer Software department. I have spent thousands and thousands of dollars there, and I must say that this was a bit strange.

Not sure if it was jealousy or what. But I am dead serious that the second he heard I was using the RED, he completely blew me off.

I love this camera, and I hope they are jealous of it. he he...

I my discussions with Panasonic and Sony execs locally I do occasionally like to drop in some mention of RED just to see if they have any interesting reactions, sadly they don't.

Although I did spend quite a while explaining Varicam to one of the Sony guys at the EX1 launch... He seemed almost as dumbfounded by it as I tend to be.

Their loss. When I recently placed my order with FilmTools (Thanks Aaron), I mentioned I was purchasing support gear for the RED, he IMMEDIATELY corrected a few "errors" in my order to accommodate the RED. They even have a whole section devoted to accessorizing it.

GO FILMTOOLS!!!

With the magic focus assist in build 15 before the area of interest is selected there where these white dots on both sides of the frame. I remember someone commented that it looked like dead pixels. Maybe this is how it started. Someone mistook the pre-assist dots for faulty sensor pixels... Just a guess..

I wouldn't say it's Red specific - this is typical of every customer service experience I've ever had with B&H (except this one time when the guy wanted me to also sublet a house he had in Brooklyn - then he was nice and sugary).

But....they're (usually) the cheapest. I hate my wallet for continually dragging me back there.

As far I know from Canon it´s one of the advantages the CMOS sensor offers against CCD: to be able to reactivate dead pixels.
