As May approaches, I can't help but wonder if there is any possibility of Scarlet still being released this year or even some kind of update/footage/stills from it? You would think if it were still coming out, there at least would be some test footage or stills being released... but I have not seen or heard anything, despite daily checking on the RedUser site... Any reassurances or comments from Jarred, Graham, or especially Jim would be welcome.

Thank you!

This would be a fair question after NAB. But before then, the expectation is that there will be some mention of Scarlet development during the upcoming RED activities at NAB 2010.

Keep in mind the Scarlet is just a slightly less complex version of the Epic prototype they are testing right now.

I doubt they will even need a Scarlet prototype until just before it is released since it is just the Epic with the high framerates and multitude of resolutions removed.

Justin that is true. From the sideline, we should really be cheering the marked progress of the Epic as the flagship product. The singular, focused successful development of the Epic will easily spillover and spawn the Scarlet product line.

So I am less disappointed now, when there is sparse updates on the Scarlet vs groundbreaking developments with the Epic.

Don't forget the ground breaking developments in software with the new firmware builds for R1 and the rapid updates to Redcine-X. All of this impacts the Scarlets as much as Epic. Scarlet is part of a total system sharing a lot of common technology, both hardware and software.

Agreed! I think most now are looking for all that technology to be finally squeezed into the new modular miniskirt with the ability to press the Big Ole Red power on button.

But clearly your comment is that the Scarlet is in lockstep with the shared technologies is certainly correct.

nab is only a couple of weeks away... probably, the best bet for updates to the program... I'm hoping for some surprises in scarlet news at reduser day, but we shall see.

Yeah, I forgot about NAB coming up. It's just after 2 years of waiting, while other companies have been selling cameras that (almost) give what the initial Scarlet promised, I've just gotten a little impatient. Been a huge proponent of RED to my production partners, who are starting to call me a sucker, and I am starting to wonder if they're right. I would still be first in line for the right Scarlet product, but the clock ticks. We only shoot features every couple years, and our next one should happen this fall. We wanted to be shooting camera and location tests on a Scarlet, but it looks like we'll be shooting those same tests on 5Ds and 7Ds. A shame, really, because I am dying for a RAW video codec, coupled with an APS-C sensor and a lens mount that takes DSLR and old 35mm still lenses. No one is making that camera yet, but the 7D is the closest thing available, and we picked one up practically on impulse. It's proven to be much more of a camera than you could reasonably expect for $1800. Just my two cents.

I too would love something by the fall but am looking at the 7D as the probable choice, unfortunately. Not much you can do but cross fingers and lick frogs. Maybe someone will come out with a product a little more suitable for indie features this summer.

I got a 7D a couple months ago to hold me over. I would love for Scarlet to come out soon but I know it will be so good when it finally does that I can handle the wait ;)

I too am patiently waiting. I'm dying to see the how the low light performance and how shallow of a DOF can be done. I hope they will post some test footage very soon.

As far as DSLRs... Now with the Canon Rebel T2i which has the same specs as the 7D for video, it's cheaper than ever. A T2i in a IndiSYSTEM rig (rails, matte box, follow focus, etc..) might have to hold me over until the Scarlet is out and is even cheaper than the price of a 7D body only!

T2i is a decent stop gap. I find the limitations of the DSLRs unbearable, but it does produce pleasing images, at a distance. Best still, some of your Indisystem rig (or other accessories) are likely to be compatible with the Scarlet too, considering the similar form factors.

*shuffles feet and mutters*

... and maybe at NAB there will be some word of the Scarlet S35.. I wrote to Santa and everything....

Isn't he called Father Christmas in the UK? You may have to rewrite it addressed to him for your request to happen, hehehe. :001_tongue:

if we don't get a release date at NAB next week I'll have to move on and get another camera. I'm sure many others will unfortunately have to do the same..

Sadly I have to say I'm on the same boat.

My real goal is the Scarlet S35, but if the fixed 2/3 comes out reasonably soon I might get that until the S35 is out. And maybe even keep it as a documentary/event/smaller jobs camera.

If RED doesn't even mention Scarlet and we still go without release dates, I'll have no option but to get a 5D.

I'll keep that until the S35 is released and then sell the body and keep the glass.

I think 5D does not make as much sense as 7D for video. The only reason (5D) it's so popular is because it was the first one out, a lot of people bought it and there are a lot more out than the 7D. 7d is much closer in the look to cine 35mm format.
All the full frame glass for 5D is an overkill for scarlet s35 and you can't go the other way around.
For 7D you can use my adapter kit and cine lenses like the RPPs- switch to Scarlet when it comes out and keep the glass
Here is the thread I made about it:

After using the 5D for stills, I can't shoot crop camera anymore. However, I'll try it when the s35mm ships!!!!!!

I'm not trying to sound impatient, but the reality is that it's now April 2010 and I told my crew I wanted this production to be shot on the interchangeable scarlet...its not like we are waiting, I still have a script to completely finish and actors to cast - I'll wait it out if we get a SUMMER release date, if we get another "hopefully by Fall" timeline I'll grab the 7D or maybe 550...I know it will be worth the wait, but the wait has brought out some nice still (w/ video) cameras that will do the job (darn near) just as good.
