Hi all,

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong sub (please tell me where to redirect myself if so), but I have been looking around for options to make my edit time faster with my RED Dragon. I know there are external video recorders like the Atomos Shogun, but I don't think this is what I am looking for. We shoot in 4k, convert to DV (720) for the edit on FCP 7, and then finally swap those out for ProRes. Are there any external recorders that compress further than ProRes?

I think transcoding to prores proxy is much faster then DV no? Most recorders can do proress proxy if wanted. But low debayering and proress proxy is (I think ateast) very fast option, try it.

Not sure this is the answer you seek, but I have been using the PIX240 HD recorder by SoundDevices.com for 3+ yrs with my Scarlet. Superb construction and performance, outputting a big selection of Prores and Avid file-types on-the-fly.

the Blade and samurai have LT Prorez option to record proxies. From what you saying you want something that can record .mp4 files. in my experiance, prorez is the best for cutting proxies as the compression algorithm isn't as insane as mp4s or avchd or other similar codecs.

Call me a jerk if you want, but FCP7 is a liability these days and most definitely holding you back.
