I am drooling over the Scarlet and I have a documentary in the works. I'm wondering what the anticipated backlog is going to be? Was/is there a backlog for the One/Epic and what was the timeline for that?

I ask because IF for some reason Red announces they are taking orders when I am ready to purchase my equipment for the doc. I would wait a little extra if that meant I could get the Scarlet instead of the AF100.

Guys please don't make me get the AF100!!

First of all welcome to Reduser. Its a great community and you'll meet some great people and there is a lot to learn.

But I have a question for you.

If I bought you the airline ticket or drove you right to the front door of RED headquarters, and walked you in through the front door and introduced you to this staff, would you actually stand there and beg them to not make you buy another camera?

David

PS: I do not intend to seem harsh or crass, I really am trying to illustrate that even though this is an online forum and I can feel you passion for you work it does still mean trying to communicate with a degree of decorum.

Hang out a while. You are going to love it here.

Also. Anything that is for sale by RED is listed at RED.com in the store section. If they announced they were taking orders for the Scarlet I'm pretty sure you'd have heard it by now, but this is the right place to keep checking.

If I were you I would just rent a camera (maybe a Red One) for your documentary and wait till the Scarlet comes out, Then make your decision then.

What if the AF100 isn't a good fit for you? You would have spent all that money and when you could have just waited a few more months and have bought (and Im sure someone can back me up on this) a much better camera with the Scarlet.

Keep in mind that this is the point of view of a 19 year old Film student with little to no money with a dream of owning a Scarlet. :smile5:

Question:
My question is, can you folks give me a brutally pessimistic estimate on how long it might take someone like me, currently no deposit down, not in line, to hope to acquire a Scarlet or Epic S? I realize you can't crystal-ball it but maybe a rough guess? When RED goes into full production do these cameras roll off the assembly line at blinding speed?

Answer:
End of summer.

Jim

Analysis:

If you are needing your camera during or before September 2011, don't bet on having a RED Scarlet that you own available to shoot it.

Depending on the nature of the documentary, you may consider renting a Scarlet to those who receive them very first (some will be rental houses) and/or renting an Epic. I'm guessing, though, that your schedule would be fairly sporadic and that renting wouldn't be economically feasible.

Hey guys thanks for the responses. I was just trying for a little humor... Guess it didn't translate that way.

The AF100 would be a good match for me, but the Scarlet is so darn sexy that I was just thinking that i could wait a couple more months if there was light at the end of the tunnel. If I could I would wait a whole year or so, but due to deadlines and immediacy of the project, I couldn't wait indefinitely. I'm just going to sit back, watch, and hope that maybe something happens favorably. If not then I will just make the AF100 my B-cam when I can get the Scarlet later down the road.

BTW I plan to start purchasing my equipment end of April, with production tentative around mid-june/july. I have thought about renting a Red, but I would rather spend the money on an "asset" that will perform at a decent level rather than turn it into an expense. Plus I will be traveling to many countries and I am not sure if anyone would rent out a Red One knowing it will be in third-world countries.

I have been scouring this thread, and I do realize that there are no announcements of release. Coming from a past career, (before I converted to the video/film art), I managed small run productions of new products. I know how tough and unpredictable it can be.. and the desire to make it perfect. So Red has all my understanding and enthusiasm.

I was just wondering what the timeline may look like should they announce and the stars align... this answers my question:

Thanks! I feel like I am learning at an exponential rate on Reduser and my appreciation for everyone's talent and expertise on here is directly proportionate to how much I am learning.

I am sure Scarlet will be on back order and you have to consider that planning your work; don't get me wrong, I want Scarlet myself and have been waiting (not patiently) with everybody else, but I would never schedule my work based on release date of any product,
Scarlet alone won't make your film a masterpiece, you know what i mean :)

Absolutely. I recently watched Monsters. I thought it was brilliant, one of the most entertaining films I've seen all year.

It was shot on a Sony EX3. Not a cheap camera, but not 3k either.
