  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nice render of a stripped down set up.

Very sweet, I like the lean aspect, as we are wanting to build so much else on besides; for high res high precision, work but not too many frames/much data for special apps. I like the fact that the Epic can be small and light for precision work and the other modules can be cabled separately (If I understand correctly?). I.e. we want to employ very precise mechatronic heads (five arc second angular precision) so that the mechanical engineering to move the cameras precisely can be much lighter as the weight of the other modules do not need to be precisely positioned as well. Lean mounting options are nice especially for such a capable instrument.

What kind of 'backplane' is the new red system going to have? is it based on existing standards or is it an all new connector? I can see the need for it to be multi gigabit and also able to 'stack' - are we going to be able to put as many modules on it as we please or will there be a limit?

what the heck holds the modules together, some sort of clip system?

these two questions have been in the back of my mind for some time. All the specs I know will be released and finalized much closer to launch, but I really am curious how the camera bus works, if there's any detail to be had on that right now..

Wow, I guess the base model will (likely) include the wireless REDmote instead of the SLR-style REDhandle that I assumed it would. Awesome!

I won't ask--I will just make a statement. I don't see a power source. I guess we'll find out later.

I think Jim partly doesn't want everybody asking questions of RED because they are still making a lot of technical design changes at this point. If they describe something, some will whine when RED decides to make a change, even if it is an improvement for most. Better not to know.

Based on the RED connectors on the RED ONE, the backplane will be a proprietary and closed design. RED doesn't want you mucking with it unless they know that you know what you are doing. They don't want you to be tempted to void your warranty.

In theory there is a way of doing this and given the merging of stills and motion picture in the semi pro market I wouldn't be surprised to see a solution within a decade.

Can one use more than 1 LCD in such basic system,
or a second LCD on a wire ?
I would like to use a bigger display (4.8"),
on camera (with the fixed lens Scarlet),
but it would be estetic overkill, I suppose ?!

So. no grip handle in the Base (3750$) configuration ?! :waaa:

Patience... I'm sure we will see a lot of answers to these questions through the images from now to NAB and through general informative posts :)
