  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing the RED TOUCH 7" @IBC14

Uhm, ever since Jarred got the first prototype, it has not left his camera. Definitely "usable" ; )

lol I knew it would be, just trying to clarify to Sander who said it wouldn't be bright enough. My rMBP is plenty bright and it's under 300 nits at full brightness.

Really surprised about the color gamut. What was the panel manufacturer thinking? What non-color-aware applications are there for a panel like this? DPI is too low for tablets and too high for vehicle in-dash systems, right? Kind of an odd choice.

Still pretty exciting though, even though it's way out of my price range.

I hate to be a pestilence about this, but would love some clarification. RED, please?

Is the flip/mirror an in monitor thing? In that case, would there ever be a flip/mirror for the SDI/HDMI outputs?
This is something I can really use. Both when doing poor man's low mode on Steadicam, or using the Ronin in overslung mode, would love to not have the monitors in the village having to go upside down. I really don't need to flip the recording, only the image out of the outputs, please!

Great to see this officially come to life, i'm really excited about this. Will order it asap.

I just trust RED's decision here, they have good reasons to choose this panel over others, no doubt.

323ppi in a 1080p, 7" display is good... Not sure why you say it is not. The Nexus 7 last year was rated as the highest ppi display of any tablet (at 9 inches or below) at 323ppi and 1080p. So I'd say that's pretty damn good. This should be more than adequate and way better than the current 5". Also, the iPhone 5s has a 70% NTSC color gamut with the rMBP (220ppi) at 72% NTSC and have never heard any complaints about color. I look forward to this display!

5 inch will still be good for gimbal use....so not really obsolete... ;)

I know this isn't OLED, but it should be bright enough. I don't think RED would put out an unusable monitor with inadequate brightness.

The rMBP screen is said to be around 250-300 nits max and I've never said I wish the monitor was brighter..

Bright enough for what situation? I live in a country near the equator and in the middle of the day it is really bright outdoors. The 5" touch is just bright enough for outdoor use but anything dimmer than that is really difficult to see.

You are probably not using your MBP outdoors in the sun, are you?

I bought a claimed 800 nits Marshall but measured it more like 400 nits. Compared to the 5" touch I prefer the 5" even though it is smaller and lower resolution since at least I can see what's in the frame.

It is also a country far far away from any RED store so I basically have to go by specs and reviews to buy anything and at the moment although I would love a 7" high res monitor I am a bit worried that it is too dim to be of any use outdoors.

But maybe someone can shoot a still with the 5" tough and the new 7" both at full brightness? I am still hoping there's something magical going on that suddenly makes it super easy to see in bright light.
