  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing Scarlet-W

So, I have followed RED from the very very beginning. Yeah. I bookmarked the browser page when it was a simple splash page of the drag car and this (at the time in the camera market) astronomically insane list of camera specs. I pre-ordered the RED ONE and got the "R" paperweight with serial number #751. Life happened for me and I had to surrender my place in line to join the RED ranks in it's very first inception. Flash forward 10 years where I have watched this company take the industry by storm and continue to evolve far beyond it's time and conventions in the camera manufacturing industry.

Well, the time has come. My life is in order, and the Scarlet-W is affordable for my needs and lifestyle. Pulled the trigger on a brain only set up (with the 3 pack of OLPFs) on January 1st. A good way to start the new year, I would say. :-)

Curious if I'm being too optimistic in thinking I may receive my Scarlet-W brain before month's end. Also, I ordered the base expander and sidekick about a week after I ordered the brain. Even if I do get my brain here soon, is it going to be a torturing tease as a paperweight for a while before those pieces come in to make the camera functional?

I know you guys are SUPER busy invading the market with the fleet of WEAPONS for any and all users, eff yeah!, but if you do have a moment to give me an idea, that would be incredibly awesome. Thanks guys!

It's been a 10 year yearning to join this awesome club. I can wait a few more weeks. :-)

Congrats Nicholaus. Last we heard from Jarred the scarlet w orders would begin processing next week. I put my down payment in within a few minutes of the announcement so I am assuming that includes myself. We haven't heard anything further but I know there are some anxious people out there like myself that are excited to see any movement In the scarlet w queue.

With all of this new stuff you guys are dropping have you thought about doing a commercial since Red seems to be word of mouth? Hit a prime time spot on cable amaze and blow everyone's mind, sure people know of red that goes to film school etc. But it seems crazy to me that when people ask what camera you have and you say a red one, Epic or dragon they say what are you talking about so then i have to educate them and pull up your site and then they want to look at your products. we look for stuff in camera shops for a lens etc. and people are not educated on what we may need for our cameras. I'm just saying can you ship posters to them about new products with stats camera info etc. you guys are powerful but the rest of the world hears sony, canon etc. but has never seen a red camera or may have seen it but knows nothing about it. At lease that's the case in Michigan where everyone wants to get into cine but don't know where to start. if i run into another person trying to match a DSLR to my cameras i'm going to scream...like man not a girl...man stuff.

Folks that want to get into film work and haven't heard of RED aren't worth your time.

I've seen more of the opposite. People around here know of Red, and would rather hire someone with a lousy (or no) reel but who has a Red than someone with a good reel, but say a Black Magic. (Yes, that is one reason that I put my order in... though certainly not the main one).

People hire red camera operators because they know and trust the product they are getting. Many times directors/producers have all the shots planned out and just need someone to press record.. Not everything we do is art. It hurts sometimes but we need to make a living

No one is getting notified until next week, as planned, so don't be hitting refresh on your emails until then : )

You just saved me about 4 hours this week. Thank you. ;)

No kidding! A few more hours of billable time regained will help pay for the gear... ;)

The entire Red team must feel like they are the parents driving the kids to the Grand Canyon, constantly hearing "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?"

Fair enough! Thanks for the heads up. I won't swarm this site until next week then!

Hiring a camera operator with a Red because they have a Red makes sense. What I've been contending with is people hiring "DPs" who have Reds because they have Reds... and this is cases where the director and producer really don't have any idea as to what they're shooting, but it will be great because it will be shot on a Red. So many people here don't understand that "DoP" != "camera operator" even though some DoPs DO operate cameras.

However many of the opportunities I've had getting hired for creative work like feature films has come because the director wants red and has seen previous work I have done with a red camera. It definitely helps get a foot in the door. Obviously you need talent and dedication but sometimes having the camera helps ... It may be harsh but it's reality.

Yes, that is one reason I put in the Scarlet-W order. Not the only one, by far; it's more for the size + weight (especially compared to my AJA Cion, not a backpacking friendly camera...), and of course for the dynamic range and color rendition. The foot in the door factor is certainly a plus.
