  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing Scarlet-W

I put in my Ursa Mini 4.6K pre-order shortly after I walked out of the press conference at NAB (one of the benefits of having a press pass).

And don't be surprised to see some writeups of my experiences using my Scarlet-W on RedSharkNews... :)

One of my favorite reads.

I've published articles there on production with Black Magic cameras, and an AJA Cion review... so it will be interesting to see what sort of response I'll get to publishing a Red article, comparing the experiences. :)

I remember your byline on a recent article but can't remember which one specifically.

EDIT: Maybe it wasn't a recent article. I was searching for an article in re: multi-lensed cameras and became side tracked with other interesting articles I had not read. Maybe yours was one of the older articles, but anyway I do remember your byline on one of the ones I read.

It's good to be remembered. :)

Hi all,

First post... Sold all of my BM gear and pre-ordered the Scarlet-W! Can't wait to be a part of the RED community! As a customer the communication on this forum from Jarred is very reassuring.

REDcode is like The Force. It will become a way of being when it comes to shooting images.

Welcome.

Red is a proven company with excellent customer service and I'm so proud to become a part of the Red community I have a Scarlet W on preorder (12/21/2015) and I'm 100% confident I'll be satisfied. Just from what we saw out of the Raven has me really excited. I have no qualms with BM, I own a BMPCC, it's really great for the size but there's no comparison to Red. Especially now with the Raven coming into existence. Just saw a newer comparison of the original BMCC and the original red one, It still blew the BMCC away in color and detail so I don't think anyone will mind trading up into the scarlet or Raven. We made a great choice. Thanks

Random Question

will the Scarlet w and packages increase in price after the pre-order date??.

trying to figure out weather or not to pre-order now or wait a little while

Could you post the link to the video?

Jarred/Brent, can we please finally get confirmation on the power draw for DSMC2? Is it the same for Raven, Scarley, and Weapon?

A lot of us new comers to Red are having to buy our first v-mount batteries and such, and not knowing the wattage makes that a bit of a shit show. I've read that it's as high as 60w, while Switronics has the Red V-Mount listed at only using 25w. Can we at least get a ball park range?

Thanks!

I don’t know if this has been suggested already, but would it be possible to record prores via R3D playback in camera?

If you’re doing a prores shoot, but want a couple of shots at 100fps this would save some post transcode.

That's not exactly how the pipe internally works. The ProRes encoder is being taken from the stream as it's being recorded, meaning it bypasses REDCODE RAW recording. Recording via playback might be possible, but I would guess the architecture isn't there. It would be too weird really.

I don't have an official answer and I haven't shot with the Scarlet-W yet, but if it's anything like Weapon it's been pretty similar to the draw of Epic Dragon. Approximately 60Wh per 1 hour of camera up time. The DSMC2 bodies are pretty new, so power optimization might still occur, but that's how it's working now.

I'm out of excuses. This thing is too awesome to pass up.

Just put in my deposit. Can't wait to shoot on this baby.

Really wish they would allow us SD upgraders to have the plate with no V-mount as part of our package. I'm invested in AB batteries and would prefer the plain plate so I can use the ET gold mount. Any reason why they won't provide this option?

I'm in the same boat - still trying to figure out if I want to go RAVEN or Scarlet-W. I asked my BS rep and he said that currently the packages will remain priced the same after shipping (of course, this could change).

Ultra noob question coming in hot!! Will there be any image quality difference between the Scar-W at 5K vs the Epic at 5K? There's so much info, but my understanding is that the Scar-W is the same as the Epic but without the higher frame rates and of course 6K. What other major differences might there be between these two as well? Looking to purchase my first RED and the Scar-W sounds perfect, so just trying to gather as much info as I can. Thanks in advance.

You're asking about apples and oranges. Or, maybe Macintosh vs. Delicious.

Epic is (old) DSMC1 while Scarlet-W is (new) DSMC2. DSMC2 has new ASICs and so there may be some extra power and magic that translates to IQ improvements.

Epic has higher data rate than Scarlet-W (225 MB/s vs. 140 MB/s), but given the above, we can't know exactly how much (or even if) that yields better IQ than the new ASICs.

It is true that both have Dragon sensors. In truth, the comparison sort of ends there - except for sharing REDcode and a common operating system.
