  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing Scarlet-W

Marc, I think you made the right choice (and I did the same thing).

IMO, Epic-D is a solid two steps above Scar-W and costed less (then the expired trade-in deal).

$9,950 Scar-D to Epic-D trade-in (expired offer)
for 6K(9 times 2K) @ 4:1 (up to 200MB/s)
vs
$11,700 Scar-W + Base I/O
for 5K(6.25 times 2K) @ 4:1 (up to 140MB/s)
(Scar-W requires an expander for a fairer comparison)

Scar-W is roughly 30% less resolution and 30% more compression then Epic-D

Sure Scar-W has nice ergo features, WiFi, and approximately half a stop more DR

However, for overcrank potential, Scar-W is drastically reduced (and chopped in half at 5K)
Epic-D 100fps@6KWS (120fps@5KWS)
vs
Scar-W 60fps@5KWS

Also, double 4K acquisition is 5.5K and something Scar-W can't do.

Daniel, you´re right and I´m pretty happy with the Epic-D and the specs of course even if I would like to use the ProRes feature for some of my projects. But additional 15K for getting that feature is a little too much right now as I did 2 upgrades this year. I´m not sure if had done the Scalet-D to Epic-D upgrade with the knowledge of that great upgrade offer keeping both cameras.
At that time it was a great choice stepping up with a path that was not planned, and it´s great to have those choices.
It would just be good to know if we will have to invest another 15k at some point to get in the DSMC2 system or if there will be a different path where we can go in the future from Epic-D which is similar to that Scarlet-D to Scarlet-W offer.
We´ll see.

Jordan, last night was getting the new stuff up. Over the coming days, we will be updating FAQs and older accessory compatibility...

A simple side by side comparison of Raven and Scarlet-W would be very helpful.

...
I remember when EPIC DRAGON's were as rare as rocking horse shit. Now people are selling second hand bodies for a 9k.

Toia, you misinderstood the guy. He meant that you can now get almost the same thing as an Epic Dragon for $9.9K "new" - aka the ScarletW

Hi Brent @ Red or Red Team,

Quick question if I may.

On Scarlet-W, is 60fps possible at 4.5K in full frame and in what compression ratio?

I'm not necessarily a super slow-mo user, but 60fps full frame is kind of the slo-mo sweet spot and pretty important for me to have it at least be somewhat close to Super 35mm (which appears to be 4.5K)

It can do 100fps at 4.5k full frame (4608x2412) and 14:1 redcode. Unless I'm mistaken it can then do 4.5k FF at 60 fps 8:1.

Thanks for the response. Any idea of what the compression ratio for 60fps FF @ 4.5K would be? It would be nice if it was at least in the 8:1 ball park. 14:1 for 60fps might be a bit high for compression.

Sorry I edited my answer in the meantime. I think it can do 4.5k FF at 60 fps 8:1.
4.5k is smaller than S35 though. It's 23mm large vs 24,9mm for S35. It's like techniscope (which is the format used by sergio leone, or by lucas for THX1138, great movies with great images).

I can live with 4.5K @ 60fps as it's pretty close to Super 35mm. That's kind of the reason I switched from Raven to Scarlet-W is because in FF, I would great prefer it to be close to Super 35mm.

Can Brent @ Red (aka The Last Word... Well... along with Jarred and Phil) verify the compression ratio for 60fps?

Thanks again

Hey Jarred,

Brilliant addition to the lineup. I noticed that the package for existing Scarlet-Dragon owners is only for the Scarlet-W. Any chance you'll extend the package to the Scarlet-W Monochrome? :D

How much are going to cost the different (to 6k,8k) Scarlet W to Weapon upgrades?

There certainly won't be an 8k upgrade for Scarlet-W. Weapon Mg doesn't even have a path to 8k.

That is not strictly true. Jarred and Brent have both stated that here is no direct upgrade possible using the existing MG boards. However, Jarred has also said many times that there would be some kind of upgrade path from Weapon MG to Weapon 8K, but that it would be "very expensive". We don't know what that looks like, but probably involves 2 stages…upgrading from Weapon MG to Weapon CF, and then upgrading to the 8K sensor from there.

Exactly. I'm assuming the same....

As a current Scarlet Dragon owner, I recently put down a deposit on a Scarlet-W. Problem is, the only package offered is with the base I/O V-Lock. I use gold mount batteries currently and was hoping to just get the plain Base I/O and add the Element Technica gold mount plate. My bomb squad rep says this is not possible. Has anyone else run into this issue? I am very appreciative of the discounted offer to previous owners but I would like to be able to use as many of my old peripherals as possible.

I use vmount batteries but I think mines are too large to fit in the new module. I guess i'll have to buy new ones.

Right. He said you would have to upgrade to Carbon, then to 8k and intimated that that would cost a whole lot. So yes there is a path, but I understood that it wasn't one that anyone would want to be on....but who knows?
