  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing RED RAVEN

And when the skater pulls off some ridiculous trick he's been working on for months and runs over to his mate with the camera "with cheap media" to find out he GLADLY lost that shot.... Haha wonder how that would make him and Red look ;)

OK. So you're the second one now that tries to distill what I said down to mean "cheap, unreliable media" and that I'll GLADLY fuck up important shoots.

What I said was: smaller, lighter, faster and cheaper. I would also expect that media to work all the time. Just like every other CF-card I've owned. So when that skater pulls off that trick he worked on for months—I actually get it on the card.

By the way, if it was an important shoot, why would you bring cheap, unreliable media? You're the one saying it's unreliable, I don't.

I said "gladly lose a shot or two" in situations that that are for personal benefit only, to not have to deal with the ridiculous sentiment that Cfast cards will break all the time and Mini-Mags never miss a beat. What's that link again to that site or product that deals with corrupted RED footage that everyone seems to know about? In another thread I got the impression that it was the best thing since sliced bread.

There is no 100% security. If there were a Cfast module RED could have their own cards just like now and you could use those. They'd still be smaller, faster and lighter. And they might allow for even lower compression and higher frame rates.

I'm getting really tired, really fast by some of the replies I'm getting lately…

Look at this. Turns out RAVEN 4K is almost EXACTLY same width as Academy 35.

Can you record the a high quality 2K/1080p downscaled FF output via SDI/HDMI to an external recorder (Atomos etc.) - we need longer record times with lower cost media to make Raven work for our ob doc work.

We have no time to back up during a working day and purchasing enough RED mini mags would be cost prohibitive.

I do think a CFast module would be a logical addition BUT I do understand that RED is a commercial company and mini mags are most likely a high margin item.

Two, we totally get the request on media. We spend months and months qualifying media for speed, reilabiity over time, the ability to handle our horsepower over long shoots without heating up so much you can fry an egg on them. It is not as simple as "the media option x can go fast enough for RED." We have a host of other requirements and plenty of media are fast enough, but just cannot check the other boxes.

We want you shooting with 99.99999% confidence in your media. Some shots are once in a lifetime. Do you want to really want to gamble there?

I think giving Raven users the choice will sell you more cameras - for us, lower cost media is very desirable because we are shooting perhaps 6-8 hours of footage a day and mini mags are just too expensive to use for this. I agree for mission critical shooting where need absolute certainty, then you have the option for mini mags BUT choice is good and a CFast model would be a winner I think.

Hey Scott

Offloading media is something pros do all the time. What you can't afford 12 min offloads to a PC / MacBook Pro via Usb3 / thunderbolt ? Man what are you shooting ? Alternately maybe this camera is outside of your workflow.....or hire another SSD when you need one. They don't cost much to hire.

some one please explain to me how the scralet-x is higher up on the camera ladder than the Raven? it would be great to get at 60FPS at 4k for the long in the tooth scarlet...

this might be a stupid question to many, but for someone that has only used PL mounted lenses on red cameras,
how do you change the stop on the fly with a canon still lens? obviously on my 5D it's a dial with clicks, which always bugged me.
but im scared it might not even be accessible while shooting.

The majority of all cinema lens released in the last few years come in a EF mount version.. From the low end to the very high end, and all of these have de-clicked irises with no clicks so you would just do it like you do.

Alot of people keep are asking our reps if they only are allowed to use Canon branded lenses ... Im not sure where that misunderstanding comes from but you don't.. there are actually far more non-Canon lenses made that use the Canon EF mount than actual Canon brand glass.

I also saw a few questions about the quality of the EF mount on the Raven, and I can tell you with all confidence that the Raven EF mount is one of the best if not the best EF mount ever made. From an mechanical standpoint, it really is phenomenal.

I'd like to be able to make my own decision on whether to user RED media or that of a third-party. Yes, absolutely.

Is it me or does there seem to be some fighting and insulting on this thread? I love this community and the professionalism of most everyone here but I'm getting tired of the insults and people talking down to each other. Either learn how to phrase your responses in a constructive manner or don't phrase them at all. When someone asks a question don't berate them or undermine them with your response. You're not helping.
If someone asks a question it's typically because they've thought out their question and they know their workflow way better than you do.

** EDIT ** This was not in response to the post directly before this one. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

Gees talk about bad timing

Thanks Mike, I've been shooting/producing/directing for 20 years so I'd like to consider myself a "Pro" and very good at what I do.

I shoot observational documentaries mainly for the BBC, where it's often just me/sometimes with a producer, following people in their day to day life shooting often constantly. Can I take time out to constantly backup? Yes I could. We owned a Red One and an Epic, so I'm well versed in what is required to make these cameras work and the plain fact of the matter is that they didn't for what we do and that's the reason we sold our Epic last year. I loved the RED image but we could not make the cameras work for what we do.

My hope is that Raven could be made to suit our workflow, hence my questions which I feel are perfectly valid and don't warrant sarcasm.

Best wishes

Scott

I'm just wondering, will it be possible to order the Raven with a Skin tone OLPF instead of the standard one?

@Jarred, do you recommend a particular Nikon adapter for the Raven? I love my zeiss zf2 with manual aperture (and soon Otus), the Ef version doesn't have that unfortunately..

Hey Scott your previous question did not seem to reflect previous ownership of a Red product ...apologies.

PS MX backup times are twice as slow on the older system.

Novoflex does a good job on their adapters, but if you are going to solely use that zf2 on a Raven, Duclos does a very nice job on converting zf2s to Canon EF mount :)

Jarred is posting at 2:30am again... Do they ever sleep??

Heh heh, if I leave you all alone together for too long you guy start getting in fist fights with each other :)

That is huge news

Yes, Brent answered this question earlier in this thread. HDRx is supported. 4k HDRx with up to 60fps sounds more than awesome. ...man how much missed i HDRx on Scarlet/MX because it couldn't do it at 4k in motion. ;)
