  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing RED RAVEN

6K resolution.
Swappable OLPFs
3D Luts
Option to upgrade to Carbon and 8K (which is 4X the size of RAVEN, for perspective)
Swappable Mounts (PL/EOS/Nikon/Hasselblad, etc)
Motion Mount Capable

Okay, PL mount option and extra 2k of resolution for $30k?

Still doesn't make sense to buy Weapon Mg.

The upgrade path seems to be the worst deal.

And nobody I know cared about ProRes since about 2011.
Especially 2k ProRes.

I expect the Base I/O V-Lock expander to be thicker than the Base I/O alone but thinner than Base I/O + Element Technica's V-Mount plate, which you can see here: https://elementtechnica.com/product/w-v-mount-battery-module/

I weight and size is your main concern, then the batteries will play a more important part than the module. But keep in mind, with the REDVOLT XL module (or Element Technica's V-Lock) you could actually left the Base I/O at home and save a little weight.

The Base I/O V-Lock Expander is a smart and cost-effective solution for sure, if i were new to the game i would highly consider it. But on the other hand the modularity of a splitted power and i/o-solution has it's advantages too. ;)

got it, i guess if my goal is to not have the the 4.7 touch, but the sidekick and third party evf, then the new i/o will never come off, and if it takes v mounts, well then i need to find the best smallest vmounts…wish they would show the size and look of that new i/o module!
thank you!

It seems for your own needs you've answered the question... I know I have... The Raven is a sweet deal too good to pass up. I wasn't compelled to get a Weapon MG due to already upgrading my EPIC Dragon 6k this year... and the Weapon MG features just weren't compelling to make the arduous upgrade again... so the Raven is really a lifesaver... gives me options from the newer body at a ridiculously low price. I wasn't going to pay 30k for Apple ProRes and 3D LUTS when I already have a RED EPIC Dragon 6k camera. I could get those missing features on an Atomos or SmallHD monitor.

I wonder why there is no 4K ProRes in the entire RED line of cameras?
It's a deal breaker for me, I need both. I would love to shoot ProRes 4K, then switch to Raw for a difficult scene and back again. I guess my Scarlet is still useful...

I hope RED lower the price to upgrade from EPIC DRAGON to Weapon MG. €10 /12k... would make sense. 19k.. no.

Weapon Carbon (woven and forged) has 4K ProRes. It's not likely included elsewhere in the range due to the fairly unpleasant data rate.

Fantastic new camera.
I wish it had come with PL mount and an anamorphic mode tho.

Hopefully at some stage.

This announcement is good news for all who still need a Red camera.
And a bit sad news for all who already own and rent out two Red Epic/Dragon cameras like me and lost thousands of dollars in worth and income over night.
It will be a huge success for Red though, and it will have good longterm impacts for any Red user.
I will be excited the day when a lowlight sensor is announced and will upgrade to that, as only that will lead to different image results a client or consumer will be able to see.

Yeah.... I mean, Raven looks GREAT. But ouch - that's a humongous gap in price for an oddly non humongous gap in specs. I would have thought Raven wouldn't do Pro Res.

Keep in mind the sensor trade in price going from MX is/was ~ $10,000. And going from Dragon 6k sensor to 8k sensor with boards already installed is expected to cost $20,000. So while the RAVE-ON (salute to Buddy Holly) is a very good buy for what it does, Weapon MG, or CF or even the Forged are priced right.

I ordered a RAVE-ON to use as a b cam and am happy with that decision. But I'm also on deposit for an 8k Weapon. And if RED would offer the opportunity to trade that place in line for 10 RAVENS, I would pass.

Any plans to bring different lens mount options? (Nikon, pl, etc)

Also will there be anamorphic options? It seems silly not to include that.

And RED is very proud of that...

Thank you very much

So the 5.0" Touch will work with the adapter, but someone earlier in the thread said that the touch screen function won't work?

As John already replied, both the CF & Forged do full 4k ProRes, and it is also possible for the MAG to drop so in the future when upgraded to the 8k sensor and bought up to par with the CF/Forged inner Computing power... So yeah, we have 4k ProRes now... And more to come... When 8k VV sensors hit the assembly line... :)

They would be wrong. It does work.

I don't think this camera competes with a RED EPIC Dragon 6k at 19 megapixels vs 8.8 megapixels on the RED Raven. It offers some serious competition to the Scarlet Dragon / 5K EPIC MX indeed. I look at it like this... DSLRs on the low end, Raven on the mid end and EPIC Dragon or RED Weapon on the high end. A lot of my clients like to use anamorphic lenses or high end PL mount lenses on music videos... plus they are very conscious about image quality and I see them sticking to the 6K EPIC Dragon or RED Weapon for their higher end shoots. The Raven on the other hand is for the indies that have always been looking for a more affordable package.

Touch will work. Brent mentioned that the old RED ONE monitors will also work with the adapter but those monitors don't have touch so you can't setup the camera solely with them.

No chill.

But you could skip the touch function for small package as you could pilot the cam through fool control and use a standard SDI/HDMI monitor (and output module).

Stupid question.

Can this unit feed to an Atomos Shogun at 4K?
