Announcing RED RAVEN

RED.com has officially been over-powered by orders and has been temporarily disabled.. ;-)

AMAZING. So happy to have joined the team; going on two years and loving every day with my Dragon.

Cant wait to join the WEAPON ecosystem.

Hard to believe that 4 years have passed. I had just finished shooting a doc and was sitting in a hotel room in Florence Italy frantically refreshing the page when the Scarlet launched. I tried for hours until our car came to pick us up and send us to the airport. Defeated, thinking I would be so far back in the line, I waited until we landed in Amsterdam for our connecting flight and tried again. I remember pulling up the page and seeing that glorious camera with a buy button. I purchased it right there in the airport. Felt a sheer moment of exhilarating terror and excitement. I was about to be a Red owner. I received the opportunity to mutually and reciprocally invest into a company and piece of tech that was going to force my hand to become better. The amount I've learned in all regards of image acquisition since receiving my scarlet is immeasurable.
So many more artists will have the chance to create with an outstanding tool that demands to be recognized by the entire industry.
This is really exciting times.
Cheers to the entire RED Team, you have once again tactically engineered a part of the film industry for the good of artists around the world, and for our astronaut brotheren.

Edit, also I put down a deposit, hell fucking yes I did.

Glad for all of the people who will join the RED shooter crew. If I hadn't chosen a Scarlet Dragon a year ago, (eventually Epic Dragon after upgrade), I would be all over this.
The low end cams get people addicted and make us have a need for the latest. I'm aware that I'm hooked and I'm cool with that.

by the time i posted this it was 4 pages back, anyone???

so do you need the I/O module to be able to have a video output? or is there another way, is there hdmi out at least on the brain?
do you need it to have battery power? or will that side handle with a battery work.

and that new handle brent you are talking about, do you need a cage to install it, or will it install right on the naked body?

sorry, been shooting epic for years but never owned or put one together, thanks in advance!

preordered the brain ;)

Yes. No, same as WEAPON. Yes, as of now. No one confirmed a side handle with battery. Will install in holes on top of body plus onto cheeseplates.

Yes for video output you can pick whatever I/O suits your application. For Run and Gun where you don't need any outputs, you can save some size, some weight and some power consumption by just bolting on a battery module to the back and a monitor to the top ( or evf to the side of just the Brain and record away. Flexibility.

Of course I am here. I am so proud of Jarred, Brent and the entire RED team for pulling this off.

This with redvolt expander seems like doc shoot killer combo.

is there wifi in the brain to see video on a device, or you need a module for that too…uh oh, i guess i should of ordered the pkg.
so the i/o that will come with the package has a battery mount, or you need the battery module on top of that?

Really agressive specs at an agressive price, seems like Red is ready to beat the whole camera market..

But, what about this "fu**ck'n" fixed canon mount ?! I don't see the point.. Is the Raven meant to replace 5d and 7d ?

The funny thing is that we can not even use Red lenses (RPP) on this new Red Camera, again, i truly don't understand ..
A M43 mount would have make much more sense..

Ps: Despite this strange mount decision, Congrats to all the team, you did a beautiful job..

Trying to order from Amsterdam for the last hour, not happening. Just putting this message in and an email to my rep to reserve a place in line at this time for package. By the way when are the woven carbon Weapon shipping. Summer is over it is getting cooler.

It seems great, congratulations to the whole Red team !

I'm just a little bit worried about the small sensor size, not truly a S35 one. Would it be possible to see some samples to wash this worry away ?

Kristin

This is, without a doubt, a revolutionary development for RED!! If I didn't already have a whole ecosystem built around my Scarlet Dragon, I would jump on this. It is like the days when Scarlet was introduced!

That said, I wouldn't trade my Scarlet D for a Raven. Like some have mentioned, I am sort of stuck in the middle. Would love to move to the new DSMC2 system and some of the great new features but Weapon is a large jump up in price (after my pre-NAB upgrade). Meanwhile Raven, while having some great new features, doesn't quite feel like a step forward.

Patience, I guess. Have to see what develops. I can't imagine Raven is the last surprise that will ever
come from RED!!

There is Wifi in the brain but that is for control... not for picture.

The i/o that comes with the base /io package has a V mount plate on the back. The Jetpack package has a DC in for a belt clip or external power, or you can buy different battery mount modules for whatever your flavor is.. Anton Bauer, V-Mount, or Redvolts . All the Battery modules are already shipping now.

Wow. There is so much to react to.

There are so many things that blow my mind.

Raven can shoot REDcode AND ProRes. (at the same time?? Brent are you guys for real??? WHAT!?)

Raven has a Dragon sensor that can shoot 120FPS.

Raven shoots 3:1 REDcode at 24fps in 4K.

Raven uses Weapon modules, so when I make the jump, all the gear will carry over.

Raven has adaptors available, so I can use a 5.0 touch from 2011. Obsolescence Obsolete.

Raven has scratch mics.

Raven uses media with capacities up to 1TB.

Raven has WiFi, so I can control it from my iPhone with Foolcontrol.

Raven auto blackshades

And, Raven looks badass, let's be real.

Raven isn't a stripped down RED. It's not a "rebadge" of a lower quality camera. This is a real, honest RED Digital Cinema product that is held to the same high standards as every other camera in the RED family. Many years from now, this will still be an extraordinary camera, capturing extraordinary images.

I didn't even know half of the things in that list when I placed my deposit. I was sold.

But when I read that the Base I/O package comes with a V Mount? I just about freakin' lost it. That's it. $9,950. Everything I need. I can finally join the RED family.

I haven't been this excited since I watched from the sidelines as Scarlet was announced.
This time, i'm jumping in.

These five months will fly by.

And, THIS is now my favorite post of the night.

I can't even begin to describe how ecstatic I am to finally jump in.

I ditched all four of my senior college finals to go to the June 2012 REDucation. I remember the exact moment when I knew RED was going to be the tool I'd depend on in my career. They brought us into the theater. A 65 foot screen I think, in Stage 4 I believe. I'd never been surrounded by so many bright, talented professionals eager to learn.

Ted said they were going to play the trailers of some films that had been shot on RED, then play a reel of RED footage. He said we'd know when it was in 4K.

So I watched and tried really hard to see the difference. I squinted at text looking for any jagged edges. I was sure this was in 2K... but i didn't want to be wrong.

And then I saw the Epic 700 reel.

I knew. I felt it.

Frickin chills, man. The detail. The sharpness. The color. I was hooked.

Spending the next few days shooting 4K footage and having it projected in 4K made me realize this was the family I wanted to earn my way into. So I busted ass, borrowed my college professor's RED, rented one when I had to, and always found a way to do the best work I could, 100% of the time...And It's led me to where I am today... shooting car commercials and TV ads for the largest auto group in the Bay Area.

My friends in the Class of 2012 ask me how I got so lucky. I tell them it's not luck. It's preparation. It's seeking opportunity. It's knowing what you're good at, and becoming great at it.

I know that if I keep studying, shooting, learning, and listening, i'll be better today than I was yesterday. Enough of those days in a row and i'll be at the level I expect myself to achieve. The only way to get years of experience, is to have years of experience. I want to be good enough to stop by REDucation in 5 or 10 years and help teach the next generation of RED shooters.

RED helps me achieve my creative goals. And now I can own one.

So thank you Brent! It means a lot to know that you guys care about us as much as we care about you, Jarred, Jim, and everybody at RED.

Besides ditching finals to go to REDucation, going in on Raven has been the most exciting career decision i've ever made.

And PS, i'm totally wearing the Dragon t-shirt I got from REDucation right now.

Edit: Holy crap, I was on page 19 while I was writing this!!!

Thanks Jarred, thanks Jim. As usual :-)
And thanks Brent, of course.

Time to start with those RED bar in Europe, guys.
Places where professionals will meet, where products are shown, and cold beers are served after a shoot :-)
