Announcing RED RAVEN

Won't lie this is fun, announcements like these are the best online parties i've even been apart of. Bunch of passionate people sharing the future. I love love Jim quote about cameras and why this announcement like all of RED camera announcement are so important.

"The camera is arguably one of the most important of all inventions… it is the single tool that has the ability to stop time, record history, generate art, tell stories, and communicate messages that transcend language like nothing else ever conceived."

Jim i hope you are joining us this evening because you brought all of us together.

Just wish this had come out a year ago when the dollar was about 30% cheaper than it is today;-)

Pretty mind blowing.

This is seems exactly the camera that people are wanting and are looking for with zero compromises.

holy crap!
Go RED!

Scarlet Dragon still shoots 5k. Though Raven offers some new benefits like pro Rez and the auto black shade. I wonder if at some point there will be a trade in program?

As soon as my RAVEN is delivered, anyone with a Scarlet Dragon can PM me for a trade in. '-)

Of course I am here. I am so proud of Jarred, Brent and the entire RED team for pulling this off.

Jim

Brent, I confirm my order and the page just goes blank white with nothing, went back tried a few times, same thing??

Yes, that is correct. 8K is four times the surface area of 4K. 4096x2160 versus 8192x4320, or simply 8.8 megapixels versus 35.4 megapixels.
When you put it like that it's pretty crazy that RED is able to fit that in the tiny Weapon. I can't even imagine what the competition is sitting there thinking right now. How can they even sleep at night not knowing what RED will do next?

I predict it will be atleast one stereoscopic rig containing two Ravens named Hugin and Munin.

Would love your thoughts on this. I love that my scarlet dragon shoots 5K motion. The question is, for most productions that Scarlet dragon is used on, does 5k a selling point. most of the people I know shooting scarlet dragon are not delivering to places where they need 5k. Just curious. Not saying I don't have an answer to my own question ;)

Tricky one to answer because I'm not "everybody". I know peeps out there shooting 4K on Dragon a lot for 4K and 2K delivery. There are distinct advantages to scaling down footage to the final delivery resolution, but REDCODE RAW Compression Ratios also play a role as well as how you "post" your footage. I did a ton of 4K capture to 4K delivery with my Scarlet-X Mysterium-X with REDCODE RAW 8:1. I tend to prefer to shoot 5K-6K on Epic Dragon/Weapon (I've had Weapon for literally 2 days, but it's the same concept) depending on what I'm doing. 4K happens when I need the 120fps and you do actually get that with Raven.

Interesting choice there. Scarlet Dragon is indeed more flexible in some ways as some have mentioned. Interchangeable Lens Mounts, OLPFs, etc..... Hard to say if one is "better than the other" in this particular case when taking things in overall. If you want S35/5K coverage and say 6K for stills or timelapse work Scarlet Dragon fits for that.

Quick site refresh right now. As you can imagine, people are waking in Europe so traffic is pumping up...

EDIT: And we are back.

Truly amazing design, RED team didn't disappoint on this one. Black Pinstripe!!
Having Slow Motion in 4k @ 120fps is going to destroy the competition at this price.
This brings back memories of the fixed lens scarlet back in the day.

And just to confirm, no built-in ND right? Not a big deal and didn't really expect it but just need to make sure since it hasn't been asked yet.

This one is a pretty huge one Jim. Congrats to you and the RED team who are up way too late yet again :)

by the time i posted this it was 4 pages back, anyone???

so do you need the I/O module to be able to have a video output? or is there another way, is there hdmi out at least on the brain?
do you need it to have battery power? or will that side handle with a battery work.

and that new handle brent you are talking about, do you need a cage to install it, or will it install right on the naked body?

sorry, been shooting epic for years but never owned or put one together, thanks in advance!

preordered the brain ;)
