  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How's highlight to clipping and full light situations for the Gemini? I'd like to see how it looks in hard bright light, and if there are any issues to be aware of. Thx.

I actually filled the same request out twice, but an Epic-W to Epic-W GEMINI, thinking something went wrong with the first one. I put it in on Thursday afternoon before Memorial Day and got a confirmation on Tuesday.

Filmed on the RED Gemini - (Epic-W)
with 50mm Lomo roundfront anamorphic
and 50mm Sigma Art lenses (all close-ups of face/mouth singing)
All footage is direct from camera, not color graded.
Ipp2 Medium contrast and Soft highlight roll off.
ProRes 4444 export from redraw and further compressed by Vimeo.

The purpose of the test was to see how the Gemini would handle a very contrasty scene, shooting directly towards a hot window, which is the sole source of light for most of the footage besides one 300w rifa w/ half ctb which gave a minimal amount of fill for the face. The idea was to stress the sensor and see how it would handle highlights all the way to clip, detail into the shadows, lattitude in a contrasty room, how it handles flare, how anamorphic renders, how colors render, etc. I wanted to see both standard mode and low light mode and see them cut together. I also wanted to see anamorphic and spherical together. This was not a technical or scientific test. We had the space for 2 hours only. The idea was to go in and utilize mostly available light from the window in an otherwise dark room.

We shot the lomo roundfront 50mm anamorphic in standard mode at 500 iso. I applied additional ND and shot the Sigma Art 50mm in lowlight mode at 2500 iso.

Most of this was shot between a 2.8 & 4 on the lomo creating a pretty soft image as these lomos really need to be stopped down further for sharpness.

Gorgeous, Evan! Nicely shot and cut! Looks to me like the sphericals and anamorphics and normal and LL can be made to intercut pretty darn well in the right hands. The only combination that struck me as out of character with the rest is the static wide shot at roughly 00:09, 01:25, 01:35, and 01:59 (via Vimeo). The richness in color and tone feels different to me than the other angles.. Is that LL and anamorphic?

I agree with you about the wide establishing shot feeling a little different. It was anamorphic and standard mode by the way. I think the reason it feels different is that it's truly a backlit scene with zero fill. I pulled out the little rifa i was using to fill violette face a touch. I was also at an angle where the anamorphic wasn't getting any type of flare, even veiling flare. That combination left a very large & dark piano in the shadows and my subject very underlit. On top of that the shot is slightly out of focus. So, we could have used another take for focus, a better composition, and a little bit of fill for that one.

Had some fun shooting fireworks with my family. Us being originally from CA, recently moved to TX, and in TX, they go big, or go home! Haha!

Low light ranges from 1280 ISO to 12,800, using my vintage Helios 44-2 lens.

Looks great. Any information on the upgrade que? I put a call in to RED but its such a cluster there I couldn't get anyone on the phone for days, and after a week when someone called back they had zero information.

p.s. I was also people told people having specific reps has been phased out completely. Can any one else confirm that this is the case for them?

For me, if you've seen any of my posts across multiple platforms, I prefer Gemini, hands down.
