Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
I'm digging it, however browsing available tutorials seems tedious. Can you please hide categories that don't have posted tutorials yet, otherwise it's a guessing game as to what content you have available. If possible, you should also add an "All" category to the list.
Other than those minor navigation issues, it's a fantastic resource at great value! Kudos for following the Red mantra of making products affordable and accessible for all!
for now, while the library builds up and fills the categories, i would suggest going to the 'New Videos' tab and the most recently added will appear on top. the categories should start to fill up soon.
and thanks for noticing the price. the whole goal here is to make these videos accessable to everyone. we have all enjoyed REDs policy of democratizing digital cinema, and want to join the party.
Hi Chris, just been on to your website. Really liked it.
At present lm not a Red user but will be as soon! as the scarlet is out! yes one of thousands.
Being a video professional in the UK, working on P2 HD and AVCIntra 100 HD with FCP your tutorials will be a great help with RED RAW.
l guess the main problems l see going to scarlet from video will be fully understanding the difference of filming between video HD and raw footage and camera settings and assessing how to obtain a really great picture. Apart from test test and test again, a view pointers in a tutorial would be really welcome.
Additionally P2 work flow is very straight forward using either P2 Flow with MXF4MAC, or the usual ingest method into FCP. Using Red l feel it wont be quite so straight forward so a basic nuts and bolts A to B to C tutorial for us video guys would be great too. lm sure there will be hundreds if not thousands a people wanting to know the best and easiest way to achieve this.
The more insight into the various work flows the better.
We'd like to thank Michael Cioni for taking the time to make a GREAT video of the Reducation community day. We had two staff down at last week's Reducation, and they came back raving about how great the program is. If you haven't been, and can swing it, we highly recommend you attend one of these amazing events.
For those who missed it, Digital Cinema Lessons now offers a 'video tour' of the Reducation community day, where you will see clips of many of today's best RED-related products. For me, one of the highlights had to be Maxx Digital's new RED Rocket device that sits under your laptop. Pretty cool.
Don't take my word for it though. Check out the video. It is a special and is available for you for only ONE DOLLAR. You will have to sign up for an account before you can download the video, so please go check it out. It's called 'Reducation' and you will find it at:
It will be at the top of the 'New Videos' list. We hope you enjoy it. And if you haven't already seen Michael's 'Monitoring RED' video, we suggest you throw that in your shopping cart too. It's a must see for anyone who works with RED.
New video up and live. Steve Sherrick has released a great new video running down the great software called .r3d data manager. If you have to deal with RED footage in any capacity, either on set or in post, this video will guide you through the interface and some of the philosophy behind backing up your data.
Find it at the top of new videos or under Instructor Steve Sherrick's videos:
new video announcement.......Working with camera-generated proxies during editing...
"Within this tutorial you will be shown one type of workflow using your pointer files from point A to Z of your job. The workflow shown will be as follows. - Editing using your _M Pointer files within FCP - Color to do your grading using your R3D files - Back to FCP to Online. - And finishing with a 1080P QT file as your final output. - Software Used: FCP 7.0 - Clipfinder 2.2"
I have recently added a video explaining the steps in order to process material out for editing within Avid.
The software used within the tutorial consists of Clipfinder, Metacheater and Avid Media Composer.
The footage used was shot 4K2:1 and was cropped into 1080P, DNXHD36. http://www.digitalcinemalessons.com/index.php?cPath=4

In "part 1" of this series you will be shown: - Setting Up Computer For Color Work - Prepping FCP sequence for Color - Sending to Color"
FYI, our first video in the 3D category is up. Thanks to Micheal Cioni of LightIRON Digital for making another awesome tutorial. This one is really great to introduce you to the world of 3D, and will be followed by more videos that begin to go more in-depth into the rapidly expanding world of 3D production/post. here's the details:
"LIGHTIRON is joined by friends at ELEMENT TECHNICA as Joey Romero takes us on an introductory tour of the 3D Quasar beam-splitter rig. Before one can begin to shoot 3D, it is important to understand the design, jargon, layout, and advantages of how a 3D rig is designed to minimize the impact on the crew. Part of a series of 3 different rigs, the Quasar is Element Technica's newest and most advanced system for mobile, fast, rigid, lightweight, and easy to use 3D acquisition. This video demonstrates the various sections of the Quasar and why it is quickly becoming the most talked-about 3D tool today."
A new video tutorial on shooting 4.5K in new RED Build.
Today, thanks to a new instructor at Digital Cinema Lessons, Luca Immesi, we are happy to release a video tutorial that he did on how to transcode the 4.5K widescreen images you can now capture on the RED into useable, edit-able files. Welcome aboard Luca, and thanks for the awesome tutorial! Details here:
"4.5K Wide Screen recording (4480 × 1920 pixels) mode is not yet supported in Final Cut Pro and Color, in order to work with it you have to transcode to another codec. This workflow explains how to: transcode the R3D files to 720p prores LT with Clipfinder 2.2, editing in FCP, importing the FCP XML into Clipfinder 2.2, transcode only the R3D files used for the editing to 2K Wide screen prores 4444, import Clipfinder XML into FCP, send to Color. This kind of workflow takes advantage of the new color science. It works also for other Red recording modes."
new video from instructor Luca Immesi on using clipfinder to manage metadata live:
Clipfinder is capable to manage a lot of different metadata, in this tutorial we'll see how to match the slate information (scene number, take number, lenses) with the name of the R3D files generated by Red One camera . Also it's possible to send the information to FCP. With different layout templates Clipfinder can make a printable version of the metadata with thumbnails of the clips included. This overview is useful to understand how to manage metadata with Clipfinder and to build custom metadata fields depending on the needs.
A new Adobe Workflow video has been released by Obin Olson to the Digital Cinema Lessons website.
Intro To Red / Adobe Workflow
In this demo Obin will show you how to quickly get up and running editing red files in Premiere and show you a few tricks along the way to help the process.
A VERY cool idea has been made into a video tutorial by Instructor Obin Olson. Here's the details:
"In this video, Obin walks you through how to set up a remote workflow via TCPIP. With the configuration Obin shows in detail, you will now be able to watch an edit being performed by an editor from any remote destination with access to the internet....in real time."
