  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Angenieux EZ lenses

Yesterday at IBC, we placed an order for a couple of EZ sets (EZ-1 and EZ-2) in S35 and FF / Vista Vision. We should get at least one set of the first available lenses worldwide:-)

If you're at IBC, talk to Jeffrey Cree at Band Pro and Yasuhiko Mikami at Angenieux about those lenses. Was really a pleasure meeting them!

David, how do these lenses look?

Like Optimo's and the Style series? Or is it obvious the EZ's are more budget? (ie harsher bokeh, more CA, soft in edges, etc).

thanks!

It's hard to properly test lenses at IBC since there are so many different light sources. But in general I would say that the look of the EZ lenses resembles the Optimo bokeh. The color is more neutral and should match modern glass (Zeiss / Fujinon). The resolution should be slightly under the Optimo lenses (Angenieux claims 100lp at T2 and 200lp at T2.6 and above on the S35 versions). CA is more prominent than on the Optimo lenses, but still very well controlled and, which I really like, they managed to color it blue / golden instead of green / magenta.

A friend made a video of the 45-135mm T3 FF35 on a RED Dragon. The monitor is set to "Magnify":

I'm excited to get these lenses. But these are NOT Optimo lenses. These will match great with Canon and Zeiss lenses. A great companion to the OTUS. A killer lens for the price - but they are not OPTIMO.

It will be interesting to see how these new lenses stack up. The Angenieux Optimo lenses are beyond compare in every respect, so the idea they can even produce something of lessor quality is an odd concept. I which they would get into the primes business.

They are not producing. They are designing. These lenses are made in Asia. Quality is great - but per my previous post - not an OPTIMO. But I'd take these over any zoom I can think of in the price range and slightly above.

There is a 10 or so year gap in the tech between the Optimo and these. I think Angenieux will close the IQ gap between the original Optimo and these as the tech advanced tremendously in 10 yeas. Unless they up the quality on the new Optimos. But then the original Optimo owners will whine.... Just can't win....;-)

I have to say that the new Optimo Style lenses are just amazingly gorgeous. They were able to add a little bit of character to these lenses, so as much as I was/am excited about these EZ lenses, I still love my Styles like I haven't loved many lenses before...

Does anyone know how long it takes to switch out the back to go from S35 to VV?

theres a whole video by band pro showing the procedure. If you do it regularly, i think you could probably do it in around 10 mins or so per lens

Here is the link to a video of the S55/FF exchange process.

In addition to the optical conversion the lenses are also mount interchangeable to E and EF.

We are taking pre orders and there are package deals if you are considering a 2 lens set. If you want specific details you can PM me.

Guys!

Tuesday 18th October @ CVP there will be an event where the'll show the EZ1...with an Epic-W too!

Someone in UK who will attend the event??

It would be great to know from someone that can test these...

Bokeh, CAs, breathing...and also coverage on 8K WS and 8K 16:9 of the EZ1 configured in S35 T2 !!

Pretty please!!!

Did anyone attend this? Any photos or feedback regarding 8K coverage or CA?

Finally got to try one out today. It was still a pre-production model but I was really impressed with it. Nice weight and great operability. The mount swap and rear block swaps were also really painless.

All very well controlled. I didn't do much of bokeh test but we did throw it on the lens projector and it was strong all around. No real surprises considering it is coming from Angenieux. Again it won't replace any optimos or high end Angenieux glass but it is extremely versatile and practical at $13,000. Matt Workman was there with me and we shot a little bit with it and he should be posting a video about it soon.
