The Cooke Anamorphic/i Look

While the “look” is crucial, precision engineering and seamless integration with other equipment is equally important. Cooke primes and Angenieux zooms are frequently used together on productions because of their complementary look and colour rendition, so the current demand for anamorphic lenses inspired our collaboration to provide a complete
anamorphic solution. We worked to combine the best of both technologies to offer Cooke’s Academy Award®–winning prime lenses that capture the Cooke Look® with Thales Angenieux’s renowned zoom technology.

Like the S4/i, 5/i, and miniS4/i lens designs, the Cooke Anamorphic/i prime lenses offer superb optical and mechanical performance. Distortion, veiling glare, flares, and all aberrations are controlled at all apertures over the whole field of view. The cam focus mechanism allows for smooth focus adjustments. Modular construction increases ease of maintenance and serviceability. Designed and made by us to our traditional high standards in
Leicester, England.

/i Technology

All of our Anamorphic/i prime lenses are supplied with the next generation of /i Technology, and are designed for all PL mounted professional motion picture film and electronic cameras.
Cooke’s /i Technology provides cinematographers and camera operators with vital information on lens setting, focusing distance, aperture and depth-of-field, hyperfocal distance, serial number, owner data, lens type and focal length in both metric and footage measurements. All the information is captured frame-by-frame for use in post-production.

And only $27,000/ lens making the set $192,000! hahaha, Oh expensive lenses!

Clearly in the Master Anamorphic range of caliber and client base.

I can't wait to RENT these! They are going to be butter..... ugh. Can't wait.

The Alexa looks so good with Cooke glass, and their 4:3 sensor is going to eat these up.

It's so crazy to have so many anamorphic options now.

The glass world is exploding at the moment.

Anyone find a price on Angie anamorphic zoom? I've always thought he #1 neglected arena of lens making was the anamorphic zoom. In the past they were all conversions done by rental houses. Never a full scale production of anamorphic zooms, at least none-I can remember. But I'm a young dude, so forgive me.

Wow,
Only one camera that's not even out yet and everyone wants a piece of it. The applesque hyperbole is consuming the professional companies Help!!!!
But then again- this is Hollywood...:frown2:

I don't get your point. Are you talking about Alexa 4:3?!

Makes me wonder... If there's suddenly such a market for glass and all these new lenses hitting the market, anamorphic and not, why are lenses not getting any cheaper? I like the anamorphic look, but it comes with compromises. Even with the latest cameras and lenses, compromises. I'll admit, I'm super-interested in the new Angenieux anamorphic zoom, but they can't even fill orders on the DP's and 45-120... When they announced a while back that they would have a new lens to show at NAB, I had no idea that it would be an anamorphic zoom. Cool, but not the droid I was looking for.

Oh, and I agree with Jacek on his sentiment. But whatever... If people will buy these, then the lens makers may as well make them. I would personally rather see them slash the price on the 45-120 and actually start making a dent in their backlog.

Interested to see the Angie Ana zoom price... guess we'll find out in a few days.

The Cookes look wonderful and if they perform like "Anamorphic S4" they could be great, like an updated version of the Cooke Xtal Express lenses. The other day I approached Panavision France to rent some old Cooke or Zeiss anamorphic glass (ex JDC and Technovision lenses) for a small upcoming project, and they told me to forget about it, since these lenses are now more popular than ever for feature work, so it seems there's a big market for PL anamorphic lenses.

On the other hand, it seems that Angenieux has just put a rear adapter on their current 28-76mm zoom lens, thus the 56-152mm focal lenght. Far less interesting, as it won't behave like a real anamorphic lens with a front anamorphic adapter or element.

Good point. Hadn't seen the fact that is was rear ana adapter for the Angie... looks like I'll be sticking with my Lomo ana zooms... and lusting after Hawk Vintage 74's (I believe they're going to be adding the zoom to their Vintage coating line up next year).

I have to say, that there are many good points to having a zoom, and many good points for anamorphic. And I must say I am just itching to test this lens and perhaps use it in the future. That said there is something very irritating on Angie's website, under the bullet points of the lens features. It says:
"The flexibility of a 2.7x zoom range is perfect for framing without the need to move the camera forward or backward."
This has to be one of the worst rationalizations of using a zoom lens you could possibly give!

A Picard facepalm moment for sure. A cinematographer should never consider using a zoom to simply be a lazy, uncreative and an inconsiderate idiot. Moving the camera or zooming is not the same thing. Gives two very different frames and it effects the composition in regards to background FoV and differs in aesthetic values.

One of those moments where an engineer wrote the bullet points and not a filmmaker!

I was wondering why the dragon 6k doesn't have a anamorphic mode. I would think 6k anamorphic would be a nice mode for these new lenses, unless there is something i'm not understanding about how the new lenses work. I am still blown away by the look and feel of the new Zeiss master prime anamorphic when I played with it at NAB.

I think there is 6K Ana on the Dragon.

Somewhere deep in the Epic/Dragon thread (LOL) Jared wrote that it was an omission on the specs http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...-Upgrade-Program-begins&p=1181843#post1181843

I find this interesting. Would that even be worth it? None of the anamorphic lenses I know of, even the new Angie, will cover 6k. Most are very limited to S35mm and the older ones don't even cover that well, by modern standards imo.

Thoughts?

I don't expect any, even the new lenses announced this year, to cover anything over 31mm. I'd love to be wrong.....

Ryan, the 6K ANA mode will likely be a portion of the frame recorded in 1.22:1 similar to how 5K ANA works now. Dragon is significantly taller than MX and provides closer to S35 coverage. A bit shorter actually, but damn close, and likely close enough for 99.9% out there.

I was wondering why the dragon 6k doesn't have a anamorphic mode.
it has an anamorphic more, and even though you get more resolution, but unfortunately does not have the full physical height for proper anamorphic. you are still cropped at 15.8mm sensor height. which kinda sucks especially since wide anamorphics are harder to get a hold on. even the new cookes aren;t coming out with the widest at the start.
i so wished the sensor height would be there with the dragon. i'd personally prefer it to a 6k resolution.

I was wondering why the dragon 6k doesn't have a anamorphic mode.

it does. Selecting formats is going to be a little different on dragon since we are being considerate of lens image circles.. so you can dial in quite a few aspect ratio and resolutions.
