  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

and another thing...

 I don't get it. What does that mean exactly? That we can see beyond the frame but the image quality isn't as good? Are you making them FF35 but don't yet know if you will get enough quality our of the edges for those prices?

In a mystical way, the sensor will cover the full image circle of your lens... :-)

I've got it!

It's a lens adapter that takes a spherical image and stretches it out for recording on the ultra-wide 30x15mm sensor. Then the image is "squeezed" in post production to get a 4:3 image. Anamorphic in reverse!

That would be swheet... a lot of messing around for that though... tough downsampled to 2k it shouldn't be much of an issue, probably impossible to notice. Sort of as "taking everything the lens can give you". Could that be?

30mm x 15mm

30mm x 15mm

Right now there are two lenses, TODAY that provide a 31.1mm diagonal coverage of the frame, they are; The Angenieux OPTIMO DP Series 16mm - 42mm T2.8, and the 30mm – 80mm T2.8. They have been optimized for 4K and 5K cameras.

I’m not really sure what the Arri Master Primes image coverage area is; it’s absent from all of their literature; I did see something in one of the threads that it was 31mm, but I’m really not sure. Does anyone know?

The long and short of it all is that this sensor size gives exponentially more options...

Jim if we mount one of these babies on a FF35 scarlet (or any s35 pl lens for tha matter). Will we be able to use the full frame for look around and record just the s35?

I would think not, because don't you need a lens that covers the whole sensor for full frame look around? The camera needs to "look around" somehow.

Depending on the format selected, the answer is yes.

Let me qualify that... full frame S35 or FF35 lookaround? If the lens can't see it, you can't.

So Jim, I think I know what the answer is. You are going to make it possible for us to do whatever the heck we can dream up. With Red's track record and the announcements made on the 3rd we should expect nothing less. Hopefully most of it rolls out right away and not in the form or build updates... but that is a non issue when the first build is set to obliterate everything else out there when you factor the prices.

I guess, not knowing enough about lenses to guess, that it is a bit complicated when you can't spill the beans on your R&D, and on top of that each of the countless sets of lenses you will be able to mount on DSMC will have a different combination of usable area and lower quality "look around area".

I wonder if you will be able to set the height and with of your recorded area and a second area for the look around? Muahahahah...

Since you're usually shooting 1.85 it would be nice if you could also see all of your mics and rigging above frame to know how far up you have to safely go before you have to call your paint and roto department. ;D

The Image circle is 1:1 aspect so you've got a lot of room around the edges that the lens can see that wouldn't be useful recorded image, but could come in handy through the EVF.

I like the idea of setting the height and with of the recorded image at your whim. :) lol... That sounds like an ultimate scenario of control over your sensor... R&D might be prohibitive, or the opposite... I have no clue. But it would be super swheet, and it would look like a normal guide on the monitoring devices.

And a secondly, set to select your total image displayed on the monitoring devices which would allow you to select how much look around you want on your monitors and EVF. This I can tell would demand a crap load of processing power for conversion of whatever you selected as your recorded + look around down to 720/1080 out and would add a lot of cost to the brain, or simply not fit in the tiny box and would have to be outsourced to a module.

Perhaps that is part of what the audio and video tap module thing does?!?! Man... I can't wait to hear what dreams will be granted. :)

Yeah I assume arbitrary 'viewing crop' would be expecting too much. Which is why I asked about FF35 viewing while s35 crop recording. Especially with Scarlet. I imagine arbitrary preview modes would be asking too much from the silicon available. But would definitely be cool.

I guess another point is that the RED EVF and monitors are all 16:9 screens so any arbitrary cropings in another aspect ratio wouldn't be useful.

I agree... this is easily the most popular request. And popular enough to make it worth the development. I think they've confirmed it was happening, back around the announcements of the 3rd. (>as far as I can remember<)

Perhaps for 2/3 it would be a top and bottom crop only recording a 2.4 aspect ratio utilizing the full with of the sensor, but at those resolutions a lot more people would chose to record the full thing for reframing and stabilization given the faster computers and cheaper RAID solutions. Whereas FF35 monitoring with S35 recording would give you enough resolution to satisfy most big shows.

Oh, my... this is that same dead horse... I am done posting for the day. :nerd:

More on 15mm x 30mm

More on 15mm x 30mm

If the Epic Mysterium-x sensor size is 30mm x 15mm with some look-around, and something for the Red ‘black area’ needs, then it’s possible for the Red recording area to have the following measurements;

Record area of 16:9 mode: 24.9mm x 15mm (4800 x 2700 - 2.5 x HD)
Record area of 1:85 spherical crop: 24.9mm x 13.46mm (4480x2420 or so)
Record area of 2:35 spherical crop: 24.9mm x 10.6mm (4480x1908 or so)

It would be possible to shoot 1:85 for normal theatrical release (keeping 2:35 within the safe area), but at the same time keeping in mind the new TV area of 16:9 without modification to the r3d files originally recorded. I’m just thinking out-loud.

If part of the15mm area is needed for the Red ‘black-area’ it’s still OK, because what we’re out looking for is that 1:85 area.

It's all in the diagonals. A lens made to cover Super-35 must cover the diagonal distance of that frame. The full "Silent Aperture" frame of Super-35 is 24.9 x18.7; which means the diagonal is 31mm. The diagonal of a 30x15 frame is 33.5mm. So if a Super-35 lens covers just a bit extra (and trust me they do), then the full 30x15 frame will also be covered. Simple math.

I'm just guessing here Mitch but I'm assuming that, in order to provide such great edge-to-edge sharpness and lack of falloff, good cine lenses cover a much larger area than the frame. In other words, particularly with falloff, there has to be some amount present but, if the image circle is large enough, it will fall outside the frame. Am I right?

Just trying to get a handle on this stuff.
