  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

anamorphic shooting mode

Jim was very vocal in a past thread about this not happening. Trust me, I want the desqueeze option as much or more than anyone but he was very insistent that this option would not be made available on the RED One.
Jim, please prove me wrong!

Hm, must've missed that thread.

The only thing that I can imagine that would be preventing it is if the graphics generator is ahead of the scaler. That way if you scaled the monitor feeds differently, the overlays [OSD] would get stretched as well. It'd be a bummer, but I'd still take it over nothing.

My guess, however, is that the graphics generator is downstream of the scaler [since the 720p feed goes to both the EVF and HD-SDI, but only the EVF feed gets OSDs when the 600p LCD is plugged in].

Well, whatever the potential issue is it must be a real problem for RED to get this feature to work since last Jim spoke about it he wasn't happy people kept asking for it. I would assume if it was a possibility they would have implemented it already since so many people have requested it in the past year.

My biggest issue shooting anamorphic was HAVING to record the whole frame rather than being able to crop the sides. This meant that I couldn't go to the higher frame rates at RC36, and was forced to drop down to RC28 - which was especially an issue as I was pushing the sensor to 1000 asa. It would be great to be able to just record the centre area in anamorphic mode - as per the guides - and not waste sensor real estate.

Are you referring to shooting on CF or shooting in 2k at high frame rates being the limitaion? Also, can you really tell the difference between 28 and 36? I've done quite a few side by side comparison tests and have a hard time telling which is which as would most.
I like that it records full scensor. This allows me to reframe a bit later if I want horizontally. Not everyones cup of tea but I like anamorphic a lot on RED (hence my 35mm, 50mm, 75mm round front Lomos). I really wish RED would surprise us with a desqueeze option but I know it's not going to happen at least not on the RED one.
