Hi Guys,

Just a quick sneak preview of a low budget music video i filmed on anamorphic lenses on the RED camera. PLEASE DO NOT REPOST OF UPLOAD THIS VIDEO TO ANY OTHER SITES YET!

Looks great.

Could you post a high res version? Maybe even just a full res still?

Thanks

I am planning on posting some high res stills, but the delivery time was a few days after the shoot, and the workflow was a render to SD 10 bit Quicktime and grade and deliver in SD so at the moment sd is all i have. Hopefully i will sort something out this weekend if i get a min, but i can say the lomo's seemed pin sharp, and much better than i thought wide open too. No Chromatic abberation that i noticed.

Where did you get your lomo lenses? Round fronts?

They are a set I bought from Steve Morton in Australia.

Pics Attached. I added new scales and did some other work on them to make them more functional and clearly marked on set, which worked a treat.

I love them.... Best buy i have ever made and almost paid for themselves after 3 red music videos as far as i am concerned.

looks great, man.

I'm a little fuzzy on the anamorphic workflow- did you shoot and then de-squish (whatever it's called) in FCP or something else?

Are those the original flares? Stronger than any Lomos I've worked with.

What was your shutter angle? The skew really shows...

Great looking video, I really like it.

The flares are absolutely real. The Strongest flares are on the 35mm and i did some extensive testing on this before shooting so i new the various characteristics of each one. I also used some secondary to punch up the blue on the flares in Apple color.

The footage was all desquished in redcine.

Onset, I used an AJA hd to sd downconverter attached to the back of a transvideo 6" sd monitor with a squeze option to show the correct aspect ratio. We also had an old dell computer monitor with a composite to vga converter and a squeeze on it for a cheap larger monitor.

Simon Dennis DOP'd it beautifully. The shutter angle was adjusted on the fly to adjust the exposure instead of ND's and we wanted to shoot wide open on the lenses. This is becuase we had a lot to shoot very quickly hence i can't give you the shutter angle.

Post workflow:

R3d files into redcine
SD 10 Bit uncompressed quicktimes rendered out.
Edit and grade off a 4TB raid drive in FCP 6 and color.

I have done 5 music videos this way now because i am fearful of using something like crimson and leaving potential rendering problems to the last minute. I would rather find out what the problems are at the beginning of the post process, liked dropped frames causing redcine to stop rendering and that sort of thing which i have had on every shoot now.

As DIT on that shoot for Nick I can tell you it was Build 15 2.2.5. I have a few high rez grabs if Nick gives me the OK to post.

We used the 4K ana setting which turned out to have the same bug as the 16.9 so couldn't go through Redalert, but that should have been fine as Nick uses Redcine only as he outlined above. However we had dropped frames on drives from the music playback it seems and Redcine won't render out those takes at all, even if it's only a frame or 2 at the end of a 4 minute take.

Anyone else had dropped frames from drumming?

For a more recent shoot of Nicks we switched to using 4K 2.1 for anamorphic but with a 4.3 frame guide which I tested to show almost exactly the same as the ana guide does in that setting. And we only used cards for the music...

Looks awesome!!!

3K has less skew. The sensor crop is read faster. Anyway, I agree that if you're filming anamorphic you're almost short on definition for a good 2K master. 3K wouldn't help.

Is this sensor skew? I thought it was just the anamorphics, combined with angled shots. On the Nescafé ad they chose to shoot with Elites on some shots because the anamorphics bend to much...

Either way I think the video looks great. Especially the flares..

That's bitchin'. By far my favorite RED music video so far.

Amazing work!
