  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ANAMORPHIC DRAGON PARTY - SOLD!!

Jason, thanks for sharing.

2 Stops more light... I like the sound of that!

It's more the "feel" of the image thats making me love Dragon. 70mm vibe.

Nice Work! I like the look of Dragon with anamorphic.
Do the Elite anamorphic lens cover the whole dragon sensor in 6k?

Doing a commercial with a Spherical PvH Dragon tomorrow ... plus shooting an Anamorphic test ... with a PV 100 mm C lens.

So 6K ... set for 2X and Frame Guid to 2.41, 100% correct ?

AND This is what we see ... correct, ie. one can't fill a monitor with the ana image:

I can quote myself with an answer for you sir:

There has been much confusion regarding how Epic Dragon handles anamorphic support. I wanted to update this with a bit of a key to understanding it for those who choose to shoot anamorphic.

Dragon Basic Anamorphic Shooting Notes

Currently Dragon has support for 1.3X and 2X anamorphic modes.

If you're using 2X anamorphic lenses you will likely desire the 4:3 or 5:4 aspect ratios under the 4K resolution. These aspect ratios are not supported at 6K, 5.5K, 5K, or 4.5K. However, do not let that confuse you, you will get what you are after under the 4K resolution mode using these aspect ratios.

For instance, 4K 5:4 equals 3840x3072 and unsqueezed you produce a 7680x3072 image with a 2.50:1 aspect ratio. You will notice that this is using close to the full height of the sensor.

If using 1.3X anamorphic lenses you may want to explore the 3:2 aspect ratios found at 4.5K and lower resolutions, which produce an aspect ratio of 1.95:1.

It's a bit different than the "old way", however this way is now more aspect ratio and resolution width based. Which makes a bit of sense.

Hope that helps.

Ah .... this explains, I believe, why the difference of angle of view between this 75 anamorphic view and this 50 mm spherical AOV ... both in 6K. The 75 ana should be wider then the 50 spherical.

Post a screenshot and do a comparison of the 4K 5:4 ANA 2X and the 50mm Spherical at 5K. That should answer that question. You can also check out 4K HD on the Spherical glass for reference and gains.

We realized that "obviously" the spherical 50 mm is extra wide in 6K .... making it wider then the anamorphic 75 mm.

However we also discovered the 6K anamorphic DOES end up with a lot more pixels across the frame then 4K at 5:4.

You know, the Bible says teaches us not to be jealous. But, gosh you guys are really making it difficult.

In this discussion: http://www.red.com/learn/red-101/anamorphic-lenses

It says ….

"Depth of field is also affected. Although anamorphic and spherical lenses technically have the same depth of field, in practice you have to use a longer focal length with anamorphic in order to achieve the same angle of view. Therefore, at the same subject magnification, anamorphic lenses produce a shallower, more cinematic depth of field.

With film, this difference could be as pronounced as going from a 2X to a 1X crop factor, depending on whether area was reserved for audio. With digital, the difference is much subtler, and with REDis equivalent to going from a 1.25X to a 1X crop factor"

We’ve found that with the Dragon in 6K, Anamorphic is now basically the same as Spherical, ie. 75 Anamorphic is equal to 75 spherical in width … so except for anamorphic streak flare and oval out-of-focus highlights … not worth it to use 6K for anamorphic. We like to use anamorphic so that we can use longer lenses. THE digital camera for anamorphic has to be a 4:3 Alexa.
