UPDATED WITH VIDEO BELOW
Ok first things first,Huge thanks to Jarred, Jim & Brent for getting us the cam last weekend, we had a shoot for Microsoft/Assimilate and Dragon was on the menu
These were shot by my twin brother Josh and myself w big thanks to our AC Dave Waldron and also Steve Gal at Du-All Camera in NYC for adding his Elite Anamorphic's to the party. The actor is Thiago Martins and he was gracious enough to sit and look pensive for the weekend and have some fun. If anyone saw the fantastic Upstream Color this year, Thiago was the "Thief" in the first act and he's phenomenal.
There is no grading on any of these shots other than some white balance and RC3/RG3, obviously older anamorphics are softer and we were often wide open at 2.5/2.8 which is not the sharpest point of the lens but this was not a scientific test, this was an available light shoot in a public hotel with no permits or agreements with the hotel.
We chose Anamorphic's because its our favorite format and we hadn't seen any Dragon Anamorphic footage out yet publicly so we dove in.We shot 6K 2:1 Ana x2, since we only had the camera for really two days we didn't have a ton of time so we setup our format and started blasting.Right out of the gate we noticed that 6K just "feels" different. Some have said it has a medium format vibe, whatever it is it feels thick and creamy and like a killer piece of old leather. It's hard to explain until you see it in use. I would rate Dragon conservatively 2 stops more than Epic-MX. I say that because there is def more there but you start getting into the personal esoteric nature of subjective sensitivity to noise. I personally rate our Epics at 800 and am very comfortable w "noise" in my image as we push into the higher ISO's. I started noticing that situations we would normally shoot at around say ISO2000 we were very pleased at ISO1000/1280 on Dragon and could've prob gone lower. ISO320 outside is a pleasure, no highlight penalties for lower ISO's is so killer.
I forgot to notate the ISO's in the metadata when I bumped out the stills attached here but I will add those on monday when I get back to my office. I'll also add tons more info but it's been a long crazy week and I wanted to get some files up and out for everyone to see. We'll have some moving footage up early next week as well.
Whatever "hype" has been around Dragon is 100% warranted, I shed a little tear at FedEx when I had to send that little guy back and I'm itching for the email to send my cams in. Cheers to the RED team !!
The Color Grade was done by Emery Wells in Scratch 7. He did a killer job and we were stoked to work with him.
