  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Analog Star Wars - The next Star Wars will be shot on Kodak 5219

Yeah stinks wish it would be shot on the Dragon :(

Doesn't surprise me. MI3, both new Star Trek movies, and the (second) new Spiderman (shot by Mindel) are all anamorphic 35. I'd have to find the source, but I remember reading Dan Mindel saying that that is pretty much his style. He wants to completely explore 35mm anamorphic. Epic was used for some stuff on Into Darkness, as well as being used for the BTS features, so I'd imagine Epic will sneak it's way into Star Wars in some capacity, just not as A-Camera.

I don't know how I feel about this.

Star wars movies were always known for pushing the envelope with film technology/technique, and now they are shooting it on film probably for the publicity and appeasing the luddites

it would look badass on dragon, just saying

Not to start a fire here Julio, your question to Neil came across a little snarky to me. I dont know Neil's intentions with his statement, but I can probably assume he did not say what he said for Publicity and validation, but probably as a good test to see what the Dragon is capable of, and who wouldn't want to see it tested to the max on such an epic film? Just my thoughts.

Sounds about right...

Nope haha, and hey Im not to judge. In this case, with this film I am more concerned with the creative in regards to story than I am in regards to image.

this should be the concern with all narrative pieces..

gh2.. epic dragon..35

doesn't matter to me, as long as there is a story and the cinematography is as plain jane as possible to the move the story forward and doesnt distract the viewer..

they will hire a USC student with his own epic dragon to shoot BTS ;)

Not the people making the movie, apparently.

Soon enough, shooting on film will be the hip thing to do.

Apparently, they are looking for a "retro feel" on the new movie, so their choice for using film is even more understandable.

I thought "Into Darkness" looked spectacular, so as far as I'm concerned...Dan Mindel can do whatever he wants! I'm just looking forward to a good, fun movie. JJ Abrams and his team are on a roll, so my hopes are set pretty high.

Totally agreed, the narrative needs to be the heart beat. The cinematography is the blood that flows through it. You want good healthy blood, but even if its not healthy, as long as that heart keeps beating you have a story.

The medium is the choice of the creative team, so I'm totally fine with whatever they do.

However, I do believe specifically with the Star Wars franchise that there's certain technological relevance in pushing the envelope. I'm sure the team behind the project knows this. We'll have to see in what ways they can deliver the mail.

I think we will see more miniatures and forced perspective on this film which I think will be great. There was no soul in the last Star Wars films with heavy VFX. And although I'm sure this will be heavily VFX as well, I think the combo of 35mm Anamorphic and some miniature work will be a fond remembrance / aesthetic for the audience. JJ will knock it out of the park.

I think it should be used cause it would push what JJ wants to do more than any other camera out there.

Whoops! I didn't mean for Neil's personal publicity or validation. I was asking if he wanted Dragon for this movie so the sensor could be publicly validated on the biggest movie of the year. Or if he somehow thought film was a creatively bad choice for the project.

It sounds like you would also like to see Star Wars shot on Dragon as a way to test the sensor, which I understand as an Epic owner. But as an audience member and aspiring filmmaker, I would really prefer that Abrams shoot on whatever format he thinks is best for his story. Just like I would prefer him to cast whatever actors he thinks are best for the characters.

No personal attack intended. Just wondering where Neil's disappointment was coming from since film didn't seem to hold Abrams back on his past projects, and it certainly didn't hurt the original Star Wars trilogy back in '77.

I hope they have an ample supply of 5219 already lined up and allocated for these next 3 SW movies... Just sayin'
