  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

An examination of: The Fujinon Cabrio 19-90 T2.9

Did a shoot with the Fujinon 19-90 the other night on an Alexa, very impressive lens. I had put the lens in complete manual and boy does it have a nice focus throw and smooth zoom ring, like butter. The lens is surprising light for covering the focal lengths that it does, but also very solid. Definitely a great new goto lens.

We're having great success with ours as well. The 19-90 is just fantastic. Combined with the 85-300... that's a lot of focal length for a carry on bag!!

Loved the review Timur. But I gotta admit, I'm more curious to know what your "secret sauce" is with Red footage. You don't strike me as someone that would throw that term around lightly . . .

Hi Timur,

Have you had the wifi fiz working on this lens?

So far I've worked with it sans motors and used it in a standard method. Or with standard lens motors and wireless system.

Working on it. Need to get my hands on something so I can shoot the test properly.

Looks like a lovely piece of kit • pricey but looks like it's saving you loads of time.

Looking at a different Zoom but have to save up -- hope it will still be around.

In any event -- thanks for the write-up.

How is the Red support for the 19-90 coming along? I love how on the f5/f55 the lens works powered by the mount, start/stop, zoom everything :) I know red had being working on it for a while now, was curious when firmware with support for it will be released?

Even if we can't pull enough power over the pins in the lens mount to run the Cabrio, can we at least have all the data interfaces operational?

Starting with start/stop on the handgrip, focus range readout in the EVF/LCD, iris control on the RED side handle, maybe focus or zoom control from the RedMote, lens data fed into the clip metadata, etc...

I finally got around to using the Cabrio 19-90 and 85-300 on two productions this past weekend. The first production was a college football game, and the next day we shot off-road adventure travel sequences. We used both lenses at times shoulder held and other times on a tripod (Miller Arrow 55).

My impressions of the Cabrio 19-90 and 85-300? In short, great lenses - well made, well designed, optically excellent, small and light for their focal lengths, and the icing on the cake is their being convertible for cine style of EFP/ENG style production. I shoot almost all mobile EFP style in my work, and I've been posting since 2006 here on Red User and elsewhere about the need for high quality convertible cine/EFP lenses that offer a removable servo-zoom unit. Fujinon listened to me, Blair, and hordes of other hybrid style shooters who have been voicing their feelings about the need for such a lens. I'm sure Blair will 100% agree that it would have been way nice to have those 19-90 Cabrios for our stage-front, shoulder held shooting of the multiple Red One productions of Journey: Live in Manila and Heart: Night at Sky Church!

I didn't have the chance to shoot with the Cabrios on Epic - these productions were already scheduled with F55. The lenses fully interfaced with the F55, enabling all servo-zoom unit functions - record, zoom, etc. I'll look forward to shooting with them on Epic. I'll definitely also look forward to shooting with the new Cabrio 14-35 when I can get my hands on one. These three Cabrio lenses are the perfect lens choice for anyone who shoots in 4k or 5k in both EFP/ENG and cine style at various times - and definitely the choice for those who strictly shoot mobile EFP style and have been longing for a servo-zoom unit on a lens that covers up to and including 5k. BTW, for the football shooting we also used the Cabrio 85-300 with a remote servo rocker unit on the tripod handle - something every EFP style sports shooter will be way familiar with from their B4 2/3" EFP/ENG lens work. That way the left hand is free to be on the barrel racking focus.

I've attached two pics from this weekend's shooting. The shoulder held shot is of me with the 85-300. In the tripod shot I'm using the 19-90

Love these lenses...

Cabrio support please

Cabrio support please

Nobody is going to like running any more cables on a camera than they already are. That said, if the story is that you just need to add a single supplemental power line and then everything works - not that big a deal. Rigging the Cabrio for studio style - controls on the handles - is essentially the same as for B4 video lenses that use the 20pin Fuji interface(s) so they are widely available standard controllers. Very helpful.

Is this as easy as giving us a manual toggle in the setup or maintenance menu that shuts off power availability over the pins in the PL mount but still supports data exchange? Does Fuji need a firmware tweak to keep the Cabrio from trying to use the lens mount pins for power? Perhaps if you attach a supplemental power cable it trips a circuit that tells the lens to only draw power from there? Just spitballing here, but I can't believe that Gibby and I are the only guys on RedUser that would love to get a day rate on our cameras on gigs that want the operational envelope of the Cabrio on a large (S35 or more) single sensor rig. More chances to keep my Epic earning sounds darn good to me.

If there is a way to retrofit the Epic brains to supply more power over the pins in the lens mounts that would be ideal. If that's not practical from an engineering standpoint, then please work with Fuji to make using the Cabrios on Epic as full featured and simple as can be managed.

How come sony manages to fully power and readout the cabrios? I power an F5 and my red with the same v lock battery's. But what was said earlier: I could also fine survive with adding an extra power cable if then all the other stuff works: (start/stop and read out of eveything just like on canon lenses. That should be possible right?
