  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Amazing new whisky!

Tonight, it's the Laphroaig Quarter Cask. It's strong, being cask strength, and very warming, which is nice for a cold Christmas Eve. There's quite a smell and finish of vanilla and a body that's nicely peaty, with a hint of sea iodine. It's not a sweet whisky, but the log fire warmth keeps you drinking! It has a very complex flavour, with a long finish. The overall taste is very strong, and a touch medicinal, so perhaps not the easiest whisky, but surely one you'll grow into.

Thanks. I think it's all part of the great community we have here also. I'll thanks Wendy on BBOT as she did most of the work putting that one together.

Today I bought one a little different. The Macallan, Cask Strength, in a lovely RED box :-). You open the bottle and you'd think, from the smell, you'd opened a bottle of sherry, but the taste is whisky. Neither the box, not the Macallan website give an age, http://www.themacallan.com/macallanPortfolio/sherryOak/cs/default.asp but off a small glass, I think it's a good one!

Just got some 1608 Bushmills Irish whisky, wow! It has a taste and complexity I'm not used to in a non-flavored Irish.

Sheep Dip' is comprised of 8 different Single Malts ranging in age from 8 to 16 years apiece.

Shawn, you like the young stuff then.
Seriously, being a thorough bred Scotsman,I even been known to wear the kilt,I would thoroughly recommend the following https://www.smws.co.uk
Exploring their single cask malts is best fun you can have with your trousers still on.
If any of you guy's are in London,I would happily take you to the members rooms to sample.
Tom.
Trying to grow old as disgracefully as I can.

Tom, I'll be giving you a shout next time I get over there then!

Graeme

Graeme,you will be most welcome.
The society rooms in Edinburgh are truly splendid, and well worth a visit, but the London rooms are also very nice if not quite so grand.
I must admit that I'm still very fond of Johnnie Walker Blue label it's a very palatable dram.
Never heard of 'Sheep Dip' probably one of those brands that we don't have over here, there's a lot of very good stuff that only goes for export.
I'm also drinking a Laphroaig Quarter Cask,at the moment,at room temperature, with a drop of water,Strathmore is excellent,it's regarded as one of the purest highland waters that doesn't add any discernable flavour to the dram.
Wow,it's that time already, time for a wee dram.
Tom.

Thanks Tom. I got another couple of bottles of the Macallan I mentioned as it turned out to be rather good.

I've had the Sheep Dip over here, but last time I took a sip was about 6 years ago, and I can't remember what it was like.

Looks like it's sorta available here - will have to look out for it.

The Search!

The Search!

Hail to the search!

I am on a search for the perfect Scotch.......and I hope I never find it!!! :)

Has anyone out there tried The Balvenie range of single malts? Exquisite to the last drop. In particular the 12 year old Double Wood...

The research on fine single malts is relentless...

Ardbeg Corryvrecan... shot on RED using Canon 50mm f/1.2 FD with IMS on RED @f/1.2, ASA 320, no any CC, processed in Red Alert.

Ardbeg Corryvrecan... was amazing but is gone now and then for the next I have to wait pretty long to get it again from Scotland.

Guys what you could recommend me to get something new???

I go tomorrow in a local Viennese whiskey shop to search for something!?

Very nice whisky Sanjin, may I suggest you would probably like Talisker,it's the only whisky produced on the Skye. Also perhaps Bruichladich, another whisky from Islay, careful though,it's firewater, not subtle but rewarding.
Another one to try is Auchentoshan Three Woods,it's a lowland whiskey with quite a different character from the island brews,it's also my local whisky,I grew up within a few hundred yards of the distillery.
Tom.

I went at the first shop around a corner that have some better whiskey stuff and have got my classic Laphroaig 10 years old.

Not the best but very very very good.

Also a good price for Vienna, 55 Euro for the bottle.

Just got a new one - Aberlour a'bunadh. (batch #23 60.2% by volume, single malt from single cask) http://www.maltmadness.com/whisky/aberlour.html

If you like Macallan, you'll like this. It's like that cask strength Macallan in the red box I mentioned before, but more so, and different. It's less candy, more complex, but still very sweet, fruity even. There's a hint of smoke, perhaps a hint of honey.

I think this must be the strongest cask strength I've had - no age statement, so it might be quite young. I like the young Ardbeg though, so being young is not a problem for me. Now, very old whiskies are different again, like how a 16yr old Lagavulin gets all warm and even though it's normal strength, it just doesn't seem that strong, very old whiskies are even more so. You get a lot more complexity, smoothness and drinkability from and oldie, but young whiskies have a life and vitality that makes them special too (and cheaper).

I picked up a Laphroaig quarter cask too - good to have in the house. I've got the Macallan still on the go, and a Dun Beaghan 8yr Islay (really a 8yr old Lagavulin) un-opened too.

So, if you want to try the Aberlour, I'd certainly go with the a'bunadh, and if you can't find that I enjoyed the 12. The 10 was only so-so, so I'd give that a miss.

Graeme

Graeme i almost exclusively drink the a'bunadh when i am in the opportunity to drink it. last new years i got inexcusably destroyed by it which is whole nother matter entirely!

i've tried numerous scotches and the ilk and for me nothing comes close to the aberlour. come NAB you got one coming from me for sure!

Thanks Jason. I'd wanted to get a bottle last year, but no luck at the local LCBO. I noticed that they had some in at the local store, and made them find me a bottle - wasn't where I could see it on the shelves. Enjoying it now. It's special. Got to be my favourite Speyside. Don't ask me my favourite Islay - that's too hard a question. But if you did ask me today, it's Laphroaig, or perhaps Ardbeg.
