  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Amazing NEW Way to use RED!

The profitabilty of my RED is going through the roof.. I am a happy camper!

Gotta say, this makes me wish for a feature with the new Epic, I wish you could select you output on HD-SDI, 720 or 1080..

That is good to hear Jay. And on EPIC you will be able to select HD-SDI out at 720p / 59.94 or 1080p / 23.98.

Jay how do you like the Nano Flash/Red setup?

Stuart,

why I can't get 1080p image when try to capture with Kona 3 card and set Dual HD-SDI

"output 1920x1080 10 bit 4:4:4 RGB progressive scan video signal at 23.98, 24.00 and 29.97 Hz"

as it is written at RED ONE Operation Guide , page 126.???

"SMPTE 372M is a standard published by SMPTE which expands upon SMPTE 259M
allowing for bit-rates of 2.970 Gbit/s, and 2.970/1.001 Gbit/s over two wires.
These bit-rates are sufficient for 1080p video.
This standard is essentially known as dual-link HD-SDI and is part of a family of standards that define a Serial Digital Interface."

I'm assuming Stuart that the frame rates (here you use 59.94 and 23.98) will reflect the project rates. So, if you're shooting at 24 or 25fps project, the HD-SDI tap will output 1080 or 720 at 24 or 25p?

Jesus Stuart...

So now you are filling requests BEFORE they get made?!

You people are pretty scary sometimes, brilliant.... but scary....

Thanks for the good wishes.. I'm not just being a fan-boy either... This is really something. People are getting excited about the RED that were never able to consider it before.

While I know I am not tapping the "full potential" of RED, I am giving my customers more than they are used too, and that's always a good thing.

Thanks to you all...

Jay

I'm assuming Stuart that the frame rates (here you use 59.94 and 23.98) will reflect the project rates.

So, if you're shooting at 24 or 25fps project, the HD-SDI tap will output 1080 or 720 at 24 or 25p?

Except that 720p / 23.98 is not a SMPTE HD-SDI format, so the camera has to create 720p / 59.94 via 2:3 pulldown when outputting that resolution.

Same would be true for a 25fps TIME BASE project, 720p / 25.00 is not a SMPTE HD-SDI format and we need to create 720p / 50.00 via 2:2 pulldown.

This is why RED ONE has "repeat frame" flags in the HD-SDI, a capture card can remove the repeat frames and get back to 720p / 23.98 (or 25.00)

So can we do 23.98 if a flagged pulldown has been added? Jay, in your first post you said that 23.98 did not work, which was a nonstarter for me. First and foremost, I'd have to have 24p.
I just assumed external capture devices want 23.98 psf (a la D-21 and F-35)
If we can output a pulled down 23.98 signal (a la Varicam/ HDX-900) and it really is flagged, we can undo the pulldown in FCP, right?
Then a Ki Pro would be a great choice...
But only if it works at 23.98 (for me anyway)
Can anyone confirm this?
Cheers,
Harry

ps- this is what I'd been dreaming of with the Red from day one for corporate clients: scaled HD video with a familiar codec. It's also what I'm dreaming of for the Epic)

Frame Flags

Frame Flags

There is at least one capture card + software product that is capturing 720p / 59.94 from HD-SDI and extracting 720p / 23.98 using the frame flag data.

If you are interested, contact Mark Pederson at Off Hollywood for details about that.

As for 24.00 v's 23.98, the camera doesn't care, we'd output 720p / 60.00 in that case. But although it's legal, some devices don't like 60.00 v's 59.94.

Stuart,
A standard is a standard, no?
If the 23.98 is being pulled down to 59.94 (regardless of flagged frames) any standard external recording device should work.
Just curious why Jay had no luck, as per his original post.
Jay?
Cheers,
Harry

Ok Harry,

I remember that.. I need to recheck it. I think this was due to me being a Noob with the system, but I am getting better now.

Here's what I can tell you: You can get rid of the extra frames in post and have a native 23.98 workflow. I will work on both ways (captureing, and post) and get back to you.

BUT you need to know, 23.98 should work, so do not let it be a non-starter.. Just think your pal Jay sometimes misses crap!

Ha!
OK, Jay, go for it and keep us posted.
Like you, I sometimes get clients who don't want to deal with r3d's. I simply go back to using my HDX-900 and Pro-35 (with or without Firestores in addition to tapes)
But the setup is a bit cumbersome, off speed and timelapse are limited, etc.
Plus lately I have to justify why we are using such a big expensive camera when the kid that shot for them last week used a DSLR (don't get me started)
Red at 23.98, out to an external device to a post-friendly codec, would be a great option.
Cheers,
Harry

Stuart,

obviously that Dual HD-SDI with SMPTE 372M is "still" not working on B30.

Only one HD-SDI Output as in SMPTE 292M is described is working,

but for dual you would need two enabled but that's not working.

kona 3 can't detect the second HD-SDI output probably because is "still" not enabled.

I like to talk in pictures and below are the two where you can find all major parts of my set up altogether:

Kona3 Control Panel, FCP Log and Capture and 126 page about Dual HD-SDI Output from B30 manual.

Sanjin,

I can tell you that when I tested 1080p playback out of RED onto the Nano Flash, the Nano instantly saw the 1080p signal with no problem.

It works there.
