Hi,
With 5.0, is it possible to use AMA to load RED files, transcode files to an DNxHD format, edit with this transcoded footage, and then relink the sequence to original AMA RED files? Sort of an offline/online process. If so, how is it done. Been trying to use Relink and various settings with no luck. Keep relinking back to the DNxHD transcoded file.

Thanks much for your time.

Yes it is, whitepaper in process. Hide the DNxHD media first then do a relink. There is a new "use filename" setting in there.

MichaelP just nailed it. The way I've gotten it to work is to transcode to dnxhd36 on one drive and then when the time comes unmount that drive or modify the "Avid MediaFiles" folder so that the Avid "loses" the DNxHD media.

Then do your relink, make sure you have all available drives selected and also the new "Allow relinking of imported/AMA clips by source file". This is what works for me. I've also been able to unlink (shift+cmd + right click and select unlink from the menu) and relink the transcoded media directly to r3d clips but again you need to hide the DNx media or else it always seems to go to that.

Looking forward to the whitepaper Michael!

That did it. This option is very useful for anyone working with RED and Avid. When I did a transcode speed test set at 1/4 debayer, it basically was 1:1.

Now I wonder if I could do the same with 5D/7D if I need to?

Thanks much.

are you transcoding inside MC or with redcine X?
thanks

No prob.

First go to Tools>Media Creation & Set Mixdown&Transcode>R3D Source Quality to Quarter.

Then select the clips in the bin you want to transcode. Go to Clip>Consolidate/Transcode and click the Transcode option. Select your desired Target Video Resolution. Pick a drive. And hit Transcode at the bottom. The transcoded files now reside in your Media Files folder on your selected drive separate from your original RED files. Also, If you look in your Avid bin, you will see the transcoded files (not in yellow).

I just did another speed test to double check. A 21 second raw RED clip set to the DNxHD 36 took exactly 17 seconds. I am using a Quad Core 3.0 Mhz MacPro with Fusion RAID FYI.

What's he best way to "hide" footage in MC? Change the "Avid MediaFiles" folder name?

This sounds good.
I'll give it a try shortly.
Yes, Justin temporarily rename the folder and Avid will generate a new one.
Or move the "1" folder in the "MXF" folder to the root of your drive temporarily.
That works for me.

changing the "Avid MediaFiles" folder to "Avid Media_Files" is what I do if i'm trying to hide stuff and of course just remember to change it back when you're done

you can just put an "X" in front of the Media FIles folder name and the AVID wont see it. it's actually a good way to separate project files as well as different resolutions.

Not sure you need to actually "Unlink" but it won't hurt. The new "Relink via AMA/filename" solvers the previous workflow issues of transcoded AMA files relinking to source AMA.

I am getting 1:1 ratio for 5D footage on a feature I am producing now via AMA transcode to DNxHD 36.

Working on a HD 1920x1080 project shot on 7D and P2 AVC Intra-100 on MC5. I am able to use AMA and play both formats instantly no problem and make selects, sync sound with footage, make comments etc. There are a number of green screen composites to do and did a quick composite edit test and that's when it got slow and choppy because of the 7D demands on the sys. I need to be able to work faster with my clients. So I transcoded everything to DNxHD 145, hid the AMA folders with 7D and P2, and relinked the the DNxHD 145 files. The transcode speeds are a little faster than 1:1 (great!) After edit is locked I will put the AMA folders back online and relink back to the raw files for final output. Will need to officially confirm this complete workflow success at the end of the project but my tests have been successful so far.

Just to note, that DNxHD resolution does not change the transcode rate - 36, 145, 175, etc. all take the same amount of time. Also note that transcode to AMA is faster than an import/transcode.

transcodeing speed

transcodeing speed

Hi, just gave MC5 a try and checked transcodeing speed…
On my machine it takes ages… for a 3:15 minute RED RAW Clip - transcoding to DNxHD 36 takes over one hour …

I’m on: Windows 7 - 64 / Intel core i7 2,79Ghz / 12GM RAM / Sapphire RADEON HD 4870 X2 - 2GB /

Is my PC not good enough?

In the task manager CPU usage just shows 50%.

Is there a way to tweak my system??
thanks

Sounds like you are in full debayer without a Rocket Card. Go to Media settings for transcode/render tab and set debayer to 1/2 premium or 1/2 good and try again.
