  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Am I the only one that finds it a bit ridiculous that...

I still am not getting it. Get a base body and add the dang xlr if you need it, there WILL be cheaper modules, they aren't out yet. Neither is the cam.

For myself, not a huge deal at all since Ravent has internal mics to get scratch track. I have a Sony FS7 which I'm keeping for doc/lower end jobs and that has XLRs. With that said, even on my paid FS7 lower end jobs we always have a sound guy.

Going to be using my Red (Raven, but good chance of moving up to Weapon MG) only for higher end projects so if it's non-MOS, going to have a sound guy for sure.

Look at the Alexa Mini, that has NO internal mic and only a 4-pin Lemo for sound which is way more of a PITA than Red and nobody seems to complain about that (probably because it's an Arri).

Alexa mini is being used as a specialized camera for the most part. Main production done on Alexa most of the time.

It's possible that I missed announcement of XLR module. Have to admit, I'm not able to keep up as much these days. Is there a cheaper module with XLR than the Revolt Expander?

I'm coming mainly from the DSLR world shooting music videos and occasionally renting REDs for bigger projects. I'm excited to finally be able to afford one with the Raven coming in March. I've been doing my research on the modules/packages to buy and I am quite dumbfounded to see that there's no way to record audio at all with the jetpack module? How is this possible? I fly my cameras on my Ronin for 90% of the time at the majority of my shoots so the jetpack seemed perfect for me. Until I realized there's no mic or xlr jacks at all. At the very least, most shooters would need some type of audio to sync footage up later either with externally recorded audio or (in my case) the track from the song we are recording. Most times on music video shoots, we don't need a "sound guy" with time codes.

Am I the only person that thinks that's a bit ridiculous? I mean recording audio is a BASIC feature of nearly any camera on the market. That should be automatic. I'm not saying there should be some high end mic in there but i mean, the fact that you could spend 8k-10k on a jetpack package and STILL not be able to record ANY audio at all just baffles me!

Surely I am missing something here?

Yep... Its a bummer.
As most RED's are used for anything other than movies..
Pro quality sound directly into the brain with no Modules would be awesome.

However...
You can plug audio in via these plugs into the Audio jacks in the camera. I use them when I want to keep the rigs small.

or buy the A Box's.. from W o o d e r n C a m e r a which are pretty much the best thing to have attached to your camera if you want to keep your rig small.

For years I have wanted a Sound Devices MixPre-D board built inside my camera, nice and tidy, the way it should be. We can dream.

I don't get it.

"It's a proper cinema camera" - The entire DSMC system was an attempt to be way more than just a cinema camera...and it is. All kinds of people shoot RED. In fact, I would assume that the majority of RED users are NOT doing cinema work.
"Hire a sound guy" - No matter what, it's nice to have scratch audio. You're telling me that if there was a mic input people would stop hiring sound guys?
"Record externally" - Again, most productions do and would continue to but that does not mean that a scratch track is somehow not needed.

I don't get how such a realistic (and logical) request from the OP elicited some of the responses on here.

Oh wait, yes I do...it's RedUser.

I didn't think the Raven or Weapon cams had this input on the brain?

I personally like the 3.5mm input with phantom power much more than the built in scratch mics, as the scratch audio can come from a mixer, a shotgun, or small cheap button mics which replicate the Weapon mics exactly anyway.

It is better that some kind of audio recording comes with the camera, though.

I'm kinda lost with all the modules discussion and stuff. But will the Raven have a 3.5mm mic input like epic/scarlet or will we have to buy a external module for a few more bucks?
Ideally I would love to have a crapy mic like the built in 5D's mic. ONLY FOR SYNC PURPOSES of course.

Totally agree. The Alexa is the most popular cinema camera out there, and even it has a 4 pin xlr input for an A box. Being a cinema camera is no excuse.
All of the Blackmagic cameras have external audio inputs. I'm just sayin'.

the 'crappy mic like the 5D' is for sure

It's not a factor of Weapon, Raven, DSMC2, or really all current/previous DSMC being a cinema camera or not. RED knows their cameras are used in many different fields and many different ways. Because of that they have chosen the modular approach. Make the camera what you want it to be.

The Alexa is great, but it's 14-17lbs stock. Weapon and Raven are under 4lbs. Even with a Module or Expander you are dealing with a different type of system that's focused on putting the most punch into the smallest and most flexible package.

There's more 3rd party and likely 1st party Expanders on the way for DSMC2 style bodies that will satisfy everybody's needs, just the existence of something like the Jetpack Expander tells me that. The whole concept behind the system is you can make your core camera body into whatever type of camera you want for whatever situation.

As for full size XLRs, the solution we know of today is the REDVOLT Expander and I think one of the OMODs if I'm not mistaken.

My question to those more knowledgeable than myself is: by using an XLR to 3.5mm adapter, will the sound quality be inferior to a standard XLR input?

i've seen some requests for a "5D like" internal mic, but I believe Raven and Weapon have that, don't they? Those should be fine for MOS type projects that just require a scratch track.

I don't understand, the Base I/O package has audio in. Should be a lot like this, but with a V-Mount plate:

The more portable "Jetpack" package is even more slimmed down for flight, but it's not like RED hasn't provided an option with audio....cuz they have!!

Remember, this is a modular brain. You can "add" lots of things to it, whether from RED or Offhollywood, etc.

And if you really can hear the difference between line-in audio on a RED One and my 788T files, you've got the ears of a bat.

It's not just what you hear and what you hear in raw material.

It's what the sound engineer hears on a proper system, has to work with and treat further, sign his name on, and make sure it doesn't suck in the end, and what you and audience will hear after sound post.

So when the production part doesn't care (not suggesting it in this example), post folks get screwed, spending many hours fixing (to a possible extent) what could have been avoided in the first place.

In terms of sound quality, our mixer's uncompressed sound files are almost always better that what he sends to camera.

Why?

Well for one, his preamps seem better: less noise.

And two - he's usually sending US a mix, whereas what HE's recording are ISO's of everything.

Our favorite solution is to use matching timecode across all devices and "append and add" our sound guys waves to our R3D's...within Resolve...and give our clients the most options possible.
