  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Alternative to Tokina 11-16

if you want to be REALLY WIDE at 2k.....

if you want to be REALLY WIDE at 2k.....

I have a PL mount angenieux 9.5-57mm T1.9 zoom lens that perfectly matches the windowed sensor of the Scarlet at 2k. This lens is a fast, wide, PL mount, TRUE cine lens. I bought it from reduser's own Nick Gardner.

With that I have a few additional things.

1. A custom adapter ring bringing the filter size from a rare 65mm to a much more common 62mm
2. A raynox DCR fe180pro .24x fisheye adapter
3. A custom lens support I had for this lens which is removable. You won't need it on your Scarlet but without this lens neither will I so it is included either way.

This would be a fantastic lens to use for shooting slow motion. I had bought it for Scarlet 2/3" cinema, then used it on GH2 with ETC mode on.

Without the adapter the 9.5-57mm is the FOV equivalent to a 21mm-123mm in Super35mm

With the adapter it is the fov equivalent of a 5mm - 29.52mm lens in Super35mm. The wide angle adapter allows for partial zoom through wide open at T1.9 and full zoom through when stopped down to T5.6 and above.

I have recently taken a job as a broadcast editor, so I am selling off my old gear as I leave the production world to go be a slave to final cut.

If anyone is interested they can reach me at peter@skibovision.com. I will make you a deal.

thanks

i used to have a full set of Zeiss ZF primes, including the 18mm. I then got the Tokina and it didn't take me long to get rid of the 18ZF. The Tokina is faster wider and just more useful. Send it to Peter at RP and get some gears on and it will rock.
with that said I am moving to PL mount and Got a Red 18-50, an 85 and 100 RPP, and to complement I just ordered the rehoused 11-16 from Nan. The new model is very nice looking and I'm sure it will perform very well...

How well does the Tokina match the ZF lenses? I've been thinking about going that route, but I've had issues with mixed lens sets in the past...

+1 on this question. I have a complete set of ZFs, down to the 21mm but want to get something wider. Hoping the Tokina will be a reasonable match but maybe someone can confirm?

I like mine a lot. Wide even if cropping to 2K, and pixel-on-pixel-off sharp.

It looks like the Sigma has less distortion than the Tokina within the Tokina's focal range (11-16mm). Can anyone confirm this? The Tokina actually seems to have a pretty heavy distortion at 11mm whereas the Sigma is already flattened out by then.

So less distortion and 3mm wider range (distorted, but still) against a 1.5-2 stops speed difference. About the same price. This does not seem like such an easy call to me. For outdoors I'd like the Sigma, for indoors the Tokina. Everyone seems to only go with the Tokina. Am I missing something?

Well just be sure the Sigma is RED-friendly. I bought the 70-200 and neither the IS NOR autofocus worked on my Scarlet (fine on my Rebel)! ka-CHING($)!
:(
Not an issue on a wide Siggy I suspect...
