  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

AllSteady 7 --- Three Axis Gimbal for only 3k

Thank all of you for your continued support. We are seeing a lot of activity coming though our kickstarter so thank you guys for considering our product.

For those of you who are still uncertain, we have some very exciting news about the Allsteady 7 coming early next week. The Allsteady 7 truly is a gimbal that you will never outgrow.

Great. Looking forward to seeing you guys at NAB...I will pretty much be making the decision there whether to buy one or not :)

Looking forward to more info, Ed. There's a lot to like about your project and approach, and if additional videos can better demonstrate how quickly/easily the Allsteady can be balanced, my enthusiasm for what I see would only grow.:-)

I must say Elizabeth, that I absolutely share your fillings about ease and speed of balancing the Gimbal... And this is what, Ultimately, really turned me OFF some otherwise great Design Offerings currently on market.

I'll talk to the guys about getting a video like this up ASAP. I will post a link here when it's complete.

I would like to know if I can start with a gimbal and then add the copter around it at a later time. Kind of an upgrade path if you will.

....Hi, I shoot with both a C500 and 1D C and sometime in future Red Dragon. What would you suggest as Gimbal and Copter that I could get now or very soon...

Yes...Please combine the copters and gimbals in a deal for people....Very tired of seeing all this hand-held gimbal footage with people running around like monkeys.
They need to be freed to go on cranes and copters. That said the copter thing is kinda intimidating to jump into...how long does it take to go from flight simulation games to
being able to pull it off in the real world without destroying your rig. The guide on the website seems totally for toys...but is that where one has to start out at...?

I would recommend starting small and working your way up. First you would want to get a training quad to learn the controls and basics of RC flying. Then you would want to move up to a GPS assisted quadcopter for aerial photography with a small camera. With this you will learn all about aerial photography with hands on use, getting great footage in the process. Once you've mastered this, then you are prepared to take it up a notch and get a heavy lift octocopter that you can attached your large gimbal and fully loaded camera to.

It's a very long and expensive road, but well worth it if you have the time, money, patience, and skill.

Will be looking forward to this.

Chiming in with some others . . . down the road, I'm also interested in aerial integration, which is another reason your company has my attention with your background in that area. So an upgrade path with the Allsteady 7/8/whatever to a well-integrated gimbal/copter combo is very appealing.

There will be an upgrade path for AllSteady 7 gimbal to multi-rotors. While the idea appears to be simply by adding an isolation plate on top of the gimbal and attach it to the copter, it isn't so. Due to the camera must be able to pan, the Hexa/Octocopter is required to have retractable landing skid, otherwise the skid will show in the frame. One may argue, why not attach the skid to the pan axis. Unfortunately it isn't that simple, if the skid is attached, the 3rd axsi compensation will fight it during takeoff. With years of experience, Turbo Ace will provide a complete solution with the retractable skid and include a zero torque servo release to prevent them from damage during landing. A few of the gimbals such as the Movi are designed to be able to attach to an Octocopter or even a Hexacopter and the AllSteady is no different. But the difference is that Turbo Ace takes a turnkey approach. This upgrade path for the AllSteady 7 will be announced at the NAB and backers in Kickstarter.com will be pleasantly surprised that this gimbal will not be limited on land.

To Andy and/or Ed:

It appears that the "Allsteady 8", which Ed mentioned in this thread as a potential REDUser group buy product, and the former "Allsteady 7 ULTIMATE" from the kickstarter campaign have been merged into a single product for the kickstarter, retaining the name "Allsteady 7 ULTIMATE"? Is that correct?

Revising my previous summary (#12 in this thread) and now including the limited kickstarter "Very Early Backer" prices, it appears the options are now as follows, with differences among the three in yellow:

1. Standard basic Red Epic/DSLR 5D fully geared (on Kickstarter, called ALLSTEADY-7 ELITE):

Ultra Fast 32bit Processor
Plug&Play Gimbal Fully Assembled
Stick Control Module

Also, the main kickstarter and "updates" pages indicate that both the controller board and the software for your gimbal are custom products that offer functionality not available on generic "Alexmos" gimbal systems. Is this correct?

And finally, can you clarify that there is no thumb control joystick for the person actually carrying the gimbal, meaning that all panning and tilting by the operator (in operation modes that support it) would be accomplished from physically moving the camera/gimbal?

Thanks,

Elizabeth

Yes. We decided to offer this through kickstarter because it is determined that it will be ready in time.

We license the software from Alexmos and encourage him to make necessary revisions to the software to make our product the best it can be.

All packages from the Elite and up offer the joystick module on the gimbal allowing full control by the operator.

Thanks for all of your questions Elizabeth. And thank you for organizing the information above for the RED forum community!

I haven't been to R User in a while. But with the interests in gimbals heating up, here I am. I'm thinking of dropping a payment on the Kickstarter but there are few things that give me reservations. Perhaps, someone could lend some clarity.

1) The Kickstarter offerings are confusing as heck. I'm looking for a gimbal that can hold an f55 or Epic with a real lens, RFF, Filters and MB on it for professional use. I see loads of different offerings and little differentiation. Could the Kick Starter add a table that lists features of the different offerings in an easy to comprehend form (see Apple).

2) Could the Kickstarter have a section that clearly describes/shows in detail how the different features work: joystick, one lever balance; etc? i.e.. The joystick is mentioned but not shown in action or at all.

3) Could the Kickstarter describe/show in detail the solo/operating modes.

4) AS7? AS8? This is where even more confusion sets in. The Kickstarter is for the AS7 and now on these pages I hear of an AS8. What's going on? Will the kickstarted consign us to a model that we'll feel compelled to upgrade to the AS8? Is there a Kickstarter offering for the AS8? What does the AS8 do that the AS7 doesn't?

While AS makes some bold claims that I hope are all true, the morass of vague information doesn't instill confidence in me as a potential purchaser (perhaps others too). To drop 5200 for being unsure of what that gets you is an unlikely scenario.

One only has to visit competing sites to see what I'm talking about. BS4 is pretty crystal clear on what 10k gets you. If I could get that for half the price, why not? But the pitch needs to be solid. The retail road is littered with many a great product that just wasn't sold right. Make it clear, organized and detailed, and you'll have my check.

I once had a deposit on a MOVI but backed out because I felt competition is on the way. I'm glad I did as the balance times of a MOVI are a deal breaker for me. I'm now close to pulling the trigger on a gimbal. Please consider implementing and / or clarify the following:

1) payload capacity better than 12 lbs. (Epic, S4, MB, Remote FF, Teralink, Power, minimum)
2) fast rebalance
3) practical / easy to change solo/operator modes
4) weather proofing (exposed armatures give pause)
5) simple centralized power solutions
6) integrated 15mm LWS
7) the ability to store and change modes without a computer on the field
8) internal cabling

In all, I'd like to see a gimbal that considers every aspect you encounter on a production. In short, imagine how Arri would do it and then do it for half the price.

I'm new to the gimbal scene. I'm wondering if any of these can be attached to a steadicam vest? I'm doing some work that involves hours of moving with the camera and I suspect that using the gimbal handheld will become too tiring, just as my steadicam becomes too tiring handheld.

However I haven't seen anybody attach a gimbal to a steadicam vest so perhaps this isn't possible?

Hi Ned,

I understand your confusion and share a lot of your interests in the search for an affordable gimbal that will actually be practical and reliable in real world productions.

One of the reasons for the confusing kickstarter structure is the nature of kickstarter itself, or at least the way it's commonly used. Keep in mind that each "model" of product often offers 3 different backer "levels", which may differ from each other only in price, in priority of shipping date, or both. If you look at the fine print at the bottom of the "Cinema" packages for the Allsteady 7, for example, you'll see that there are THREE backer levels for the identical product package:

CINEMA VERY EARLY BACKER at a price of $3,295 with first priority shipping set for April;
CINEMA EARLY BACKER at a nominal price increase of $2 (or $3,297) with second priority shipping set for May;
CINEMA at a price of $3,897 (a $600 price increase) with third tier priority shipping set for May

So why would anyone ever sign up for anything but the "VERY EARL BACKER" level? You wouldn't. That's why each tier of backer levels is limited to a certain number, in this case 25, to offer customer incentives for early backing and profit protection for the vendor. If you look, you'll see that everyone who has so far backed the campaign (for something other than the nominal amounts that don't involve actual product purchase) have pledged for the "CINEMA VERY EARLY BACKER" level. That is the cheapest price at which the Ccinema package will be offered and the one that will ship earliest. Of the available 25 slots at that level, 11 currently remain whereas ALL of the 25 slots for both the "CINEMA EARLY BACKER" and regular "CINEMA" level remain. The next tier of slots to fill up for those interested in the cinema package will be the "CINEMA EARLY BACKER", and they'll get their units a month after the "VERY EARLY BACKERS", and then those who didn't commit to either of those tiers will then have to pay $600 more and wait until all 50 units of the other two tiers have shipped before they receive their product. Once the product is established, the vendor will likely offer it to the public for regular (non kickstarter) sale at a price even higher than the last tier of the kickstarter. So there are typically price incentives for being involved as a kickstarter supporter, and the earlier the backing, the greater the savings and/or earlier the shipping.

I went to the trouble of cross-referencing information early in this thread with the kickstarter, and the concise summary of the various packages of most likely interest to RED Users, along with the "VERY EARLY BACKER" prices, is at post #57 in this thread. Hope this helps, and I cosign the requests in your numbered list. Ed Lin of TurboAce has indicated some more info, and possibly a demo video, addressing some of these points is forthcoming. So check back in this thread.

Thanks Elizabeth,

I looked back at your thread. Thanks for clearing up the confusion. That said, I think I'll probably plunk down some cash on the Ultimate. So from what I gather, the Ultimate basically has a higher payload, upgraded motors and longer tray? Also, does anyone know how to order a 2nd operator remote control? There doesn't seem to be a pledge option for that.

Tim

Ed,

I'm on the fence about investing into All Steady. While on paper and appearances, your product seems great. But when I delve into it deeper, certain question and details that'd inspire confidence are missing. Could you please answer the following:

- Do you have footage of setting up and using a fully kitted out BS7 Ultimate. Virtually all gimbal makers fail on this. By fully kitted, I mean, set up the way most pros would have to use it on a commercial, TV show or movie. That's with: f55 or Epic, Matt box with filters/eyebrow, Remote FF, Wireless Transmitter, and Monitor.

- Can we see footage of exactly how long it takes from mounting a built camera to completely balancing it. I passed on the MoVI because I think this process is not quick enough. Your demo footage just shows adjustment of fore/aft, not roll . Am I missing something?
- Where can we see footage on how the stick control works?
- The Follow Focus is a mystery on what it is or how to pledge extra $ for it.
- 2nd operator control - no pledge option for it
- List the warranty

Only other suggestions are design:

- Consider calibration markings so we can quickly re-adjust between filter / lens changes
- Solutions to nount an AB or V mount on the handle/yoke not the camera

That's pretty much it.

Thanks.

...I'm on the fence about investing into All Steady....

Yes...it seems like many questions remain. The kickstarter seems rushed together.
For example how much does the 12 lb. capacity gimbal weigh and how much does the 18 lb. gimbal weigh.
And then what kind of power and money copter will it take to get either off those off the ground.
If it takes a $16,000 copter to get the 18 lb. gimbal off the ground and a less expensive copter
to get the 12 lb. gimbal airborne then it would affect most people's choice.

...Also, does anyone know how to order a 2nd operator remote control?

There is a $1500 option on there to add the control and wireless together. But alot of people own a aminon wireless video like
Paralynx..Nyrius...CMR..Camwave...etc. that are good for close to 1,000 ft.
So if you add the Devo10 transmitter+receiver I think you can get the 2nd operator remote control of the gimbal by useing an
auxillary channel.
THen I believe you could add another Devo10 Transmitter+Receiver to control/fly a copter but I am
not sure on all of that at all.

Seems wow hobbies is an online hobby presence for Turbo Ace..but again not sure.

Torn between Ultimate and Gremsy. 18lb vs 14lbs capacity. But for now, I seem to be getting straight up answers right away from fellow cameraman, Rory Hinds, with the Gremsy. That means a lot. I'm amazed at when I go the sites of many a gimbal maker how many vital specs they leave out, yet seem to never leave out the "Buy Now" button.

When you're spending between 5000-15000 grand, I expect a spec sheet as comprehensive as when buying a new car. Now I don't expect foul play or scams here (yet) but I am old enough to remember the Origio Follow Focus debacle. Great product, great price, and a trail of tears.

Updates on Kickstarter

Updates on Kickstarter

Hello RED community,

We've added a few updates on the Kickstarter page for those of you who are interested.

We now have a package for remote joystick operation without the wireless live stream video because many of you were asking about that.

We also have some new news about the battery and the new XL battery at 4S 6000mAh for an extra long run time.
