  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim just started an interesting thread about Peter Liks recent lens tests and discussed their results of using the Canon L-lenses on an EPIC.

Besides the revealed downsides with some of the Canon Ls, the ability to pull smooth focus with the REDMOTE PRO will undoubtedly be of huge benifit for many EPIC- and SCARLET-shooters. Among other things, it will make those cameras even more mobile, not having to bring a standard FF-rig on every gig.

But I am curious to knew if anyone has read any news regarding the REDMOTE PRO? Since it was announced there has been hardly no further info.

There has been a timetable laid out for the I/O-module, probably to be released in April. I really wish we could have the same for the REDMOTE PRO.

Even though I have been on this forum since 2007 it is not easy to keep up with every new post. Regarding the REDMOTE PRO, maybe I just missed its latest revaltions? :)

Not a great deal of news recently, I seem to remember talk of a major redesign during development. VERY key piece of gear for the DSMC concept imho. I'm sure they'll pull it out of the bag. :)

Are there any alternatives until the Redmote Pro hits the shelves?

What RED did, when they decided to give us electronic still glass mounts is revolutionary!

Unfortunately its full potential won't be met until we have either the REDmote Pro or some equivalent wireless Follow Focus system that uses the motors in the lenses.

Now for the RED ONE we had Birger - they pretty much did what the Canon/Nikon mount plus REDmote Pro will do for the EPIC/SCARLET... But what until then???

We already have the electronic mounts and the cameras are capable of communication wirelessly... Isn't there someone working on a matching protocol to make the old Birgers talk to our new cameras or designing an alternative to fill this need? With the SCARLETs and Canon mounts rolling out in large numbers, the need for a better way of pulling focus on our still glass is larger than ever! This demand will continue rising at least until the REDmote Pro will be released, and it has been confirmed by RED that this won't happen anytime soon!

So if there are any systems out there, please let me and the rest of the community know! I'd be very thankful for any direction you could point me at =)

Right now I'm in limbo - using the AF for handheld and monopod based quick pickup shots and GVs, to speed me along. Very happy with that, but then using my good old Bartech on the canon glass with a little creativity, calibrated out nice and wide so it feels right. Not ideal, but functional.

Redmote Pro is my next holy grail... But I'm not kidding myself that there won't be another 'must have' right after.

Hey John,

Would you mind clarifying how you're using your bartec with your Canon's? So I imagine you've got some focus rings (zacuto, cinevate etc) but you're then using your bartec in a way that let's you spread the distance the focus travels to give it greater more controlled rotation like up around 270 or 260 degrees?

I'm in the same boat, Canon's or not... hhmmm?

Thanks...

Yup focus rings, and just setting the end points manually with the adjustment pots on the rx of my old analogue bartech. Works fine really, I can make 300 degrees of rotation on the bartech controller into about 20 degrees or less at the m-one motor.

Dito that. Even if there was such a third party solution, would RED allow it?

As you also point out, if Birger would be willing to make a mount that just attached to the Epic but had no wiring what so ever to the camera, would RED say it was OK and that it wouldn't void their warranty? The Birger mount could easily draw its power from a battery, let's say a D-tap able. And the VF wireless FF is already their in the combo.

I really wished we heard something from RED regarding all this.

I'm anticipating the redmote pro to have a wireless video feed from the Epic. How sick will that be! I think that's why they have gone to a redesign. Also nothing recent about the wireless h264 module. Of course, a few months after they are out of backorderland, I expect to see some of this stuff surface.

my god, it [the redmote pro] looks swell...

it might be that is so great they decided to keep it for themselves... :)

I think red mote pro should be an iPad... dumb to invent all those remote controls when there is all ready good platforms out there.

an iPad with some small red cine X pro setup builder and a focus slider etc... that would be meeting both the high end demands and the low end cost limits. RED should open a apple app department and start making out apps, we would be willing to pay as much and development should be much faster than it is for hardware development.

an ipad app is coming, which is great, but i'm after red's elegant, physical ff-wheel plus full camera control solution, and that means the redmote pro coming out from the fog

+1 - I've been thinking pretty much along these lines for some time. RED appear to be working on making the REDmote Pro an all singing & dancing tour de force that does everything except make the tea. Great, but perhaps what's really needed is something very like an Impero - a *relatively* simple knob to hand to the AC that JUST pulls focus (plus, optionally, maybe iris and record start/stop function). Existing REDmote plus 3rd party dedicated electronic FF may well be a better and cheaper solution. I'd be astonished if Viewfactor aren't already working on something very much along these lines; I'm somewhat surprised something isn't already on the market. Could be wireless, talking same protocol as REDmote, could be hardwired and plug into the camera.

*sighs*

It's a point frequently made on 3rd party storage threads and you know what... I'm TIRED of hearing what RED might and might not 'allow'. It's a bloody CAMERA, people WILL make all kinds of accessories for it, people WILL use it in ways that were never envisaged and give it capabilities even Jim and Jarred have never thought of. Deal with it.

YOU try pulling focus accurately by dragging your finger across an iPad touchscreen if you want to... *I* will stick with the nearest thing to an analogue mechanical knob I can find! :wink5:

there really is no comparison between using the inside electronic focus motors of an canon L vs a external FF-solution, the redmote pro needs to make her debut outside the closed salons

well, i just wanna keep my warranty, but +1 to just some, any kind of knob for electronic control...

I guess we all want that focus wheel... but still it's easer to make a focus wheel that attach to an iPad or iPhone... lets not reinvent the wheel :)
