  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All quiet on the (RED)western front ...

When talking about the improvements in Weapon, people often forget to mention the new temperature/black shade management system. I think this is one of the huge improvements and will result in more consistent results (how many noobs have noise issues because of this?). Lots of bigger (than I) AC's and operators don't like having to actively manage temperature/black shades on the Epic. Many whom I've told should be doing this just expressed resentment: "I don't have to worry about it on the Alexa..."
To be honest, they have a point.... Luckily Red is listening.
As someone in line for a Carbon Weapon, I think there is enough delineation. More data throughput (lower compressions?), UHD ProRes, earlier delivery and an upgrade path. (The Carbon description page mentions upgrade path, the Mag doesn't... At the very least I infer this to mean that upgrading a Carbon Weapon will be significantly cheaper than a Magnesium Weapon).

As to "theory" i have no idea. Was just an idea of how to et rid of a bit of overhead in the compressing of the R3D's and bandwith to the media. But there might well be dedicated chips doing the compression, and those cycles might well not be "free" to take on the task of debayering and encoding prores at UHD for all I know.

Duely noted Gunleik. Maybe the RED engineers could take another look at the Mg capabilities for recording UHD Prores, when they are finished pushing out the CF. I think alot of us are buying the Mg & are the type customers working in various mediums and would appreciate it more than the bigger budget productions might.

Jarred what about LDS support on new PL mount, is it possible to make 3rd party PL mount with LDS support ?

We have LDS implemented in firmware, but the demand for LDS just isn't strong enough. We have had maybe 5 very passionate LDS owners request LDS over the years. I am happy to be proven wrong though... Show me the demand and we will make them.

As to LDS... I am in.

It would be crucial (in a very good way) on a rather big'ish thing I am working on with a set of European and US partners, to have both LDS and i-data implementet and frame-accurate reading of the lens-data in the r3d's and out of the data port would be... let's say t would be great, for starters....

And I am sure I am not alone in that. (Well I know I am not)

That is so lame.

There is no demand to use Master Primes and Master Anamorphic lenses, you've got to be kidding.

LDS was promised by RED on Epic-X, here we are 2 generation later.
You are making a brand new mount for the weapon, how hard is it to add a few extra data pins if you already did the firmware support?
With the last redcine release you finally made it possible to extract lens data on a per frame basis from the R3d, so the lens metrics could actually be usable and not just a pretty viewfinder display.
Arri and Sony both support LDS.

As a master prime owner and dragon owner I'm disappointed with your failure to deliver on a promised feature.

+1 on LDS (i'm 99% Master primes). Maybe we should create a poll ... so RED can get some real solid numbers ?

Believe me all rental red dragons that we are supplying to the filmmakers matching with Master Primes like every day.Its like 8 out 10 jobs we are having MPs (talking for my shitty middle east country here) And LDS is damn important for many people. At least for european region.
BTW You better ask these question to big rental companies in US.Im %100 sure all of them wants LDS support

+3 for LDS!!!!

LDS would be helpful. +1 on that.

And Chris, easy on the tone. Your disappointment is understandable but we keep it civil on here. There is a cost associated with everything. Red goes out of their way to accommodate their customers when there's demand and it makes business sense. The way to get what you're looking for is to respectfully request it and see if others share your interest. Calling their decisions lame and sarcastically asking "how hard is it?" will not get you what you want.

I suspect that a poll would show 100%, give or take, would want LDS support.

Sure seems like it is possible.

The question would be how much jing and when could it become available. The corollary to that is, would there need to be any modification to the now shipping Weapon mount and, if so, what is the plan for that? New mount/trade in vs. modification of now shipping mounts, since the market for a current shipping mount, if not upgradeable will dry up immediately.

Please enable and maybe give us an algorithm, much like the one for the Weapon NAB announcement, that was needed and helpful.

Thank you very much

If Weapon is aimed (in part) to satisfy Rental/Studio market, then suppose LDS makes sense...regardless of whether owner/ops need/want it as much...

The only accurate poll would be an order poll. That is, those who want should agree to pre-pay for a special mount that gives them LDS. RED can calculate how much that would cost and with a pre-order for x amount of mounts, builds and sells them.

Or RED could make the bet that it would help the industry...

That is the Socratic point, of course. RED could ONLY provide the LDS option and there would be no dissent, if that was the only game in town, which arguably, it should be. The price point would be what the price point would be. Or RED offers the option up front. The incremental cost, for the hardware mount change can't be much to RED and the net result i=s ibcreased Sales/Rentals, etc., etc..

Thank you very much

Fully willing to do this.

I know in this new world of kickstarters and $500 3d printing machines many people have this weird impression that it is easy to make anything and everything without effort and expense. That's not a reality. Ask anyone that makes anything that needs custom electronics. Engineering time is valuable, and not unlimited. And making one thing from the list means we can't make another.

This reminds me a bit of the Optical Viewfinder. Alot of very vocal people said when we started that we could not sell a single camera without one. There were some persistent customers so we finally said sure, and asked for orders.... suddenly it was crickets.

We did this with LDS a few years ago. We asked rental houses and canvased some of our customers and they just said it wasn't important enough for the added expense. Everyone of course has an opinion and everyone thinks their opinion is always right, but if enough people put up their hands and we will proceed. Who knows... maybe times have changed. Now metadata is more important than it was back then. The Master Anamorphics are out now that are great. Whatever the case may be.. we can give it a go.

We can put a LDS mount up for preorder. It is likely going to be almost double the price of a normal mount because of anticipated volumes. If only a few of you order the price will stay that. If alot of you pre-order, then the price will come down. Just like the special order PV mount. Sound good?

Sounds great! I have three cameras, an EPIC-M Dragon, a SCARLET Dragon, and a soon-to-be CF Weapon (with 8K upgrade). Would I be able to kit all three cameras with the new lens mount, or only Weapon. Thanks!
