  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All Out of 1TB MINI-MAGs?

Good question. We did a soft release of new firmware today (v6.3.75) and Ops Guides that includes support for these new MINI-MAGs. Check there for details...

Thx Brent.

I saw that they were the same 300/mb speed as the now "old" red mini-mags, in the store link. Was just assuming there would be some increase with a new version. For anyone else wondering, according to the Op Sheet there is not a difference in speed/compression performance.

The good news is even though the prior-gen drive was 512GB, we were able to preserve nearly the same usable space for you guys on the 480GB. For the 960GB, not quite the same but close.

Also, with more people leaning to larger capacity with HELIUM introduction, we passed those larger quantity discounts along to you. Resulting in more credit-card friendly pricing for both the 480GB and 960GB compared to previous versions, saving $600 and $950 per card, respectively…. Heck, we even managed to drop the 240GB by $150.

brett what is the usuable space now on a 480? might help the people unloading 512 for 2K to have a reason to spend more ect.

Same as 512's believe it or not as stated by Brent.

I saw he wrote just about the same, I am wondering what that means, could mean 10 minutes of footage in the RED world you know? However I hope it is exactly the same, would make for some great used buys ;)

I would hope about the same couldn't be more than 5/10 minutes difference. The 512's normally fill up at around 45-70 minutes depending on the compression - so if the difference is 5 to 10 minutes - that's well worth the price drop!! :D If it's the same - wow!

Can someone confirm if the new mags are faster/can write at lower compression at the same frame rate.

If you're asking how much footage you can record on a 480/ 512 card - it depends on the Raw Compression. At 5-6K and a compression of around 10:1, I've recorded over an hour on a card. When you drop down to 6:1, I'll get between 35 - 45 minutes.

Back at 5K, the 64 gig card was pretty close to a 1000 ft 35mm load - 10 min.

Hope that helps.

I get that, I am wondering about actual useable space on 40 vs 512, thats what I was wondering, an actual number, no matter what I am either picking up 4 more 512 or 4 480s soon for my triple weekends

LOVE the price on the 960GB! THANK YOU RED.

Steve, 512s were $2450. 480s are $1850. The actual usable space is extremely close. Don't have exact numbers in front of me here as we approach midnight, but I know it is like in low single digit percentage points. So, say, less than 5% difference in usable space for close to 25% in cost reduction.

I actually have a 512GB mini mag connected to my mac right now and Finder says the capacity is 480.05GB. So if the new 480's are a true 480GB, I'd say that's a win!

thats all I am wondering, just wanted to know the exact useable space difference, which i guess I still don't have an answer to but I look forward to it. Bravo RED on making the media more afforadable

Of course to also keep in mind the invisible "Rule" to always leave close to 10% FREE space available... Never max out Storage, no matter of the size or type of storage.

Ouch just bought 1TBs used for more than this from a few different people. Still a great deal though. Maybe I'll need some of the new ones too.

DAMN! Just bought 2 512gb's couple of weeks ago that hurt's

Same here. I also have one of them sealed brand new condition. I tried contacting my rep to see if I can exchange it for the new 960 gig and just pay the difference. He mentioned he didn't think it was possible since it's past the 10 day return window.
