  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ALEXA MINI LF OUT :)

The same thing could be said for here in Paris.

Most rental houses own a couple of the latest RED's because they feel obliged to, but no one here finds them reliable and they are far too complicated. Remember, we are not talking owner operator's who know the in's and out's of their cameras. We are talking about a new set of hands every time it goes out. Mini's are simple, lightweight, reliable, and with great looking output. It is for this reason that they outnumber every other rental camera by a wide margin. We are talking 10 minis, 3-4 SXT's and 2-3 Red's, a couple of Phantom's, and then all the less expensive broadcast cams, C300II's, FS7's, etc. Also the Sony Venice is really doing well. A lot of people like that camera here and they are already outselling RED to the rental houses. The Alexa LF has NOT been a success however. Far too big and unwieldy. The old form factor from Arri no longer works. The SXT's that the rental houses have predate the success of the Mini and they are often sitting on the shelves now, but still go out far more than RED cams. The RED Ranger however is a smart move. The rental houses like what they are seeing in terms of it's ruggedness, simplicity of menu, etc. They would prefer a camera with this kind of reliability to the current form factor. Whether that translates into sizable sales remains to be seen.

In terms of the Mini LF, most rental houses will get a couple of them to begin with. HOWEVER, the big concern is that Arri is developing a new sensor which will hit the market in less than 2 years. When that happens, fashion dictates that the Mini LF will be pushed to the side. This is also why it is not that much more expensive than the original. It may not have the window to recover it's value like the original Mini, so there is concern. Further, it's frame rate limitations are a problem. When you figure that a mini also typically rents for about 2500€/month for series, fiction, etc...this means that it is a loss leader if investment cannot be recouped in three years.

in part you're right about what you said. Although always the same old story and people are lazy and stupid and follow the mass.
But forget the "habit" factor on a certain sensor and knowledge, even if Arri were to come out with a new sensor how would it be accepted? maybe it's a flop, even Arri may be wrong or not, so what would happen? ... No one can say. What will surely take hold is the large format in the years to come and the s35 will be put aside, or rather if you have a large format camera, it can always have two formats in a single body and is a big advantage, better to lose a few frames in slow since many do not even exceed 50 on a set and if you go beyond you use the Phantom, as well as having full frame lenses will be more profitable .. So the mini Lf or the Monstro or Venice will be solid cameras still for the next 5 years or maybe more . Now the level is very high and taking a big step forward is very difficult, especially when people are now knowing 4k in post production, even if people still prefer 1080, but only because they transport less data and everything is faster in production place and the costs are reduced, or better to say that in the last few years the productions have less money and cut on the post and this leads to a reduction in turnover, time, HD, rendering, color grading etc etc, but even here the PCs or Macs become more and more performing, including software and slowly we get to be as fast as a 1080 .. So I wouldn't worry about the investment on Monstro or Alexa mini LF, indeed whoever does it now will have more margin and more knowledge.

Hey Luigi, actually I am not speaking about myself. You seem to be expressing more the point of view of an owner operator. Actually, I am talking about rental houses and the people whom they come into contact with on a weekly basis with heavy duty production schedules. There is a very clear reason why they own 10 mini's and only two RED cameras. This is about reliability, ruggedness and simplicity combined with a great image. This is not about being lazy or stupid or merely repeating back what others say. It is based on regular and repeated experience and yes these kind of investments make a huge difference to them because they are buying multiple cameras.

Just today, Arri clearly announced that they are working on an S35 4k camera with a totally new sensor. It confirms exactly what I have said. They have announced it in order to warn prospective clients of the Mini LF to think carefully before purchasing. They don't want those clients to feel burned later, even if it means losing some revenue and pre-orders. Compare that with the venom people have felt towards RED after investing in some of their cameras and experiencing huge price drops and the arrival of new cameras only a year or two after. This is an interesting comparison to make and tells you everything you need to know. For Arri to say this is responsible behavior and exactly why people have so much confidence in them.

No of course, I do not speak as owner, I speak as Rental. around 2-3 movies a year, and many other usual market things. Every holy month I take courses to educate people about DOp and directors, including assistance on the set forever. Since then, in the last few years, nobody has ever had problems, including the post, everyone knows how to move because they are educated. While before for these DOp and Directors the feeling was what you had described, REd has problems and is complicated and blah blah blah .... Most rentals do not do this, and therefore prefer ALexa mini .. Not my case at least I can't help solving problems and educating people to get their product the best they can. If I didn't care then the one described by you is correct. What I've noticed is that many rental companies supply REDs with different configurations and sometimes very disastrous, perhaps due to the tide of 3 parts as accessories, There is no coherence, perhaps with Ranger they will close this gap.
We could discuss a lot about this but there's no reason.
If you are a good one, you can use them all and you get the job, like any tool.
For the s35 that will arrive I am not worried, or rather better, creating more confusion even with ALexa eheheeh :), I am joking, however, I would never buy a S35 4k camera in 2020, maybe it will have more dynamics and a different color, as long as I can and don't end up like the D-21, but as I told you, improving what's there today is really difficult.
If I gave you 70k usd today and you would have the choice would you take a s35 at 4k or an FF at 4.5k where you can also do an s35?
mmm I doubt the first choice.
We could talk for a long time nobody knows, anything can happen.
This is my thought ...

Interesting dilemma for potential LF buyers with the announcement that there will be a new 4K S35 sensor and camera from Arri in mid 2020 which is only a year away. Full points to Arri for this announcement as planning for the investment in cameras is very difficult without a future road map. You would have to question the ROI on a SXT or Mini ordered today although it gets more complex if you were considering the LF as it is a large sensor camera while the new camera is S35 only. I imagine Arri will eventually build a Full frame version with the new sensor but when is a hard call. Apart from more resolution I am looking forward to seeing where Arri pushes its new sensor design? Expectations will be high. How will Red respond to the new Arri camera with the DSMC3 and new Alexa possibly launching around the same time? Maybe a new "Battle of the Bastards?" with cinematographers being the winners.

Just an Arri 2019 Showreel until some new Arri Alexa Mini LF info comes along.

The new B-Mount System by bebob and ARRI

By Crimson Engine

Battery manufacturer bebob and ARRI have cooperated in order to meet the increasing power consumption of modern cameras and lighting with a sustainable solution. In close consultation with ARRI, the bebob engineers developed the B-Mount – a new battery mount system that fulfills the power demands of today’s equipment while providing maximum flexibility at the same time. ARRI will be using the B-Mount for all its future cameras.

First B-Mount products from bebob were showcased during NAB 2019, where I had the chance to speak to representatives from ARRI, bebob and TSF, a big production and rental house in France, about the new B-Mount system.
