I've heard from a VERY good source that Arri is announcing an 8K Alexa on Thursday at IBC! It would be shipping by NAB 2014 time.

I would like to know if this is true, so if someone at IBC can let us know, that would be appreciated.

Thursday's done with over here in Europe and nothing about an 8K Alexa on the net.

I think they meant "Thursday in the US... Friday in Amsterdam!" We'll see....

Ah. I'm flying to Amsterdam tomorrow. Guess I'll take a peek at Arri's stand.

How is another camera bad? I would think that most people would like options when it comes to cinematography. I don't wanna watch movies that are all shot on the same camera. Different jobs require, and or can benefit from, different tools.

I hope NOT! That would be bad....

You know the telephone game. I say 4K plus and by the time its gone from person to person its now a giant 8K supper turbo charged moon rock sensor camera. All joking aside Maybe but...
I cant see that company moving that fast and shooting them self in the foot while doing it. Who would want an Alexa now if your going to spend that much. You probably will think twice about buying present day Alexa's or 4K ether if 8K is only a few months away..

Recording 8K uncompressed seems highly unlikely. I wouldn't be shocked if they have 8K on the sensor and down sampled it to 4K for recording purposes - though that would still be an awful lot of data even for a Codex.

Jim shook things up, not surprised they're starting to "boil over" ;-)

Brian,

By bad I meant not good for owner operators. I also meant I hope not because RED has always been the innovators and this means they will be behind in the game now if this is true. I don't personally care how many camera's there are, I pick based on the job and material I'm shooting... Don't jump to conclusions...

I walked by the ARRI stand today and they had something big under veil on a tripod in the middle of the stand. camera with a black fabric thrown over it like kinda in a hurry. but I'm guessing just a normal alexa they covered up to protect it from wear and tear during focussing/rigging.

will definately have a look tomorrow!

I still think they are going to bring it back to SD 4:3, that is the best way ;)

I'm not sure how they'd accomplish 8K out of the same chip (Alev 3) when it's effective area is 3392x2200. Pixel sampling, assuming the sensor had a larger pixel fill, would still yield less than 8K.

My guess is it will not increase in DR though if this rumor turns out true. My guess is it's the same chip, just with more pixels...
