  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ah... Even this camera is light, and run and gun, we don't have good light ND options

No more internal ND.

I am no longer stress free from ND Filter hell.

I have just options of...

1. Vari ND - bring the sharpest lens and yet your image will be soften like 50$ lens on ebay.

2. Screw ND - Screw you

3. Small matte box.

4. fuck the Depth of field.

arghhhhhhhh

Stress has come again.

I use 4x5.65", 77mm and 95mm screw-ons. Several matte boxes. Go for the screw-ons when needed.

Occasionally Motion Mount.

Rarely Variable ND.

For me it's just always been part of the job. There are solutions that nobody is doing yet though.

Why can't someone create magnetic NDs instead of screw ons? Or bayonet solution? Mattbox is of course good for any lens, but if you have a lens lineup with the same front diameter, it wouldn't be impossible to create such attachments. I'm also trying to understand why screw ons still exists since a bayonet would make things faster and easier. I don't know how many times I've had trouble with screw ons getting stuck or there's dust in the threads. I even have an old Canon lens that got a bump on the front filter, locking the screw on since the threads are bent. Some bad ideas always stick around, without anyone changing it.

Use the Xume and love them! Got them mounted on all my filters and my lens caps. Makes it so easy when I'm running around on my own. Just, chop/chop, instead of screwing.
At winter, with gloves and etc it becomes such a relief! Never dropped one but I'm careful since they're "just" magnets

In case anyone is interested, I inquired about 95mm size with Xume, and got this reply:

Probably late 2016. We have a few other new products in the pipeline and the larger cine lens sizes are a little further down on the list.
We don’t get a lot of requests for them but I think there’s enough interest to justify adding them.
I should know more after the first of the year and hope to be able to make some announcements then.

Haven't used them yet but Letus makes a matte box with magnetic filter trays for their anamorphic adaptors. I think they plan on bringing this to their regular matte box but I am not sure. I actually think I'll ping them and ask? :-)

another Xume user here. Can't use them in every situation but they are very handy when I do use them. way better than screw on. only problem is that you can't really stack multiple Xumes. Otherwise really good solution.

I too am very interested in investing in a new RED camera (Raven or Scarlet-W)... but take pause because of the lack of ND filters.

Does anyone know whether a Canon mount could be created, similar to the motion mount, that would only include ND filter wheel, and not suffer from undo light loss?
Given this new market territory for RED (i.e. more affordable, and more likely used in run'n'gun) I would think it would be a coveted mount.

... I know that it would put me firmly in the Scarlet-W camp, with removable mounts. I would certainly pony up for such a native ND mount. Do we have the flange distance to make it work?

Thanks for sharing Xume - look like I'll have to try it out. Using sony a fair amount the ND's were nice, can't say they didn't come in handy a lot.

All part of the investment in red ecosystem though. For me filter bracket's and 100mm got the job done when i wanted to keep it light. We're also in a time where people can create a solution to a problem much faster.. so if there's nothing yet everything could change by March.

All in all - a few extra seconds of work is worth the superior image quality ;)

Seriously? If not having any internal ND is more important to you than ever other aspect of a RED camera that produces superior results, and IMO more easily, than nearly every other camera out there (people love to argue for Alexa so I won't go there) - then I can't help you. LOL

Yes, it would, perhaps, be a nice feature but it isn't there (except for Motion Mount). Suck it up and get some screw on filters and/or matte box with filter trays.

Hi Colin, I made up my mind to, in January, order a Raven.
I was delighted to found out I'll need ND filters. I am currently shooting with a 5D mk3 and all my lenses have ND filters screwed on. It allows me to very tightly control my depth of field. When I say tightly I mean to set my depth of field however I want and control the exposure with the ND. No compromise! When you don't control lighting (my case as I am mostly shooting docus) I keep the same look throughout a shoot by locking in my f-stop.
Call me crazy but I really like to be able to control my DOF.
I will give this Xume system a try. I hate unscrewing my filters.

Same here, i 've been a Xume user for a while now, no more headaches!
I adapted all my lenses to 77mm, got a big bunch of ProND in 77mm and never looked back.

I really recommend their Magnetic lens cap as well, so convenient .

Interesting device. Thanks for the share.

Has anyone had any experience using the Heliopan Variable ND filter? I've heard it doesn't impact sharpness as much as others, and also retains coloration a bit better. It would be nice to come up with a "snap on" solution consisting of Xume and a variable ND - provided it doesn't hit sharpness and color in an unmanageable way. That said, the game plan doesn't really help when it comes to cinema lenses... but at least for those "run and gun" scenarios with still lenses, it would be a great combo.
