  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

After Effects Look Creation

Here is an experiment I did in AE using blurs, masks without Shine (which I haven't updated to AE6 yet).

Is this close to what you're looking for?

Phil

Phil Im sold with that one.
Plug-in please ;)
LOL!

Do not know if any body mentioned it here but try to make mattes and then use "depth que blur with a gradient. i.e a blur that hits harder where your matt is white and not all all where it's black and creating sub samples in between. Still if you do this you need to mask out and work around the people in the scene so I think best solution is the magnifying glass, or preferably a tilt shift lens and then some help in post with this depth que blur. It's available in most compostiing packages worth the name. For aftereffects you could porbably get saphfire plugins and then you find it in Zfog.
But nuke, shake and the others have the same function.

Thanks Bjorn very helpful.
We have Sapphire here on Symphony, Ill give it a try later.

Wow.

Thanks for all the ideas guys.

It definitely sounds as though glass elements in front of the lens is the way to go to reproduce exact results but I am not sure it fits with this shoot. This is the first time I've worked with this agency and if all goes well it could be very beneficial for us and I'm not sure I want to be flashing coke bottles in front of the lens with 20 people on set if I'm not 100% confident in the look I am going to get. i like the idea just need more time to get the specifics into a production day type workflow if you know what I mean.

I especially like the idea of ditching the pricey diopters for the magnifying glass from the local pharmacy. Genius.

As for all the AE tests results I think Phil yours takes home the prize for most like the originals.
I'd love to have a look at that AE file if you have a moment to spare.

Thanks again for all the help and I will let you all know how it turns out....unless it is a disaster...then I'll pretend this thread never happened.

Having worked with guys that shoot a lot of commercials and music videos, I've seen so many interesting bags of tricks...Here's what also may work as suggested by other users...another (random) piece of glass held in front of the lens with carmex (lip protector) lightly smeared at bottom of glass...Then there is just holding a thick piece of glass at bottom of lens....basically experimentation. The one i liked a lot was using a sterno can lit just in front and below a long lens....

Hey Johnny. Would you be willing to share other interesting tricks from the bags of tricks? Love on camera effects, especially optical tricks. Would love to hear what you have to share...
Peace!

Gabriel, i have a shallow bag of tricks that are all either hand me downs from working with other creative talents or those that i've merely picked up while fooling around I've seen some very creative things done by others such as mixed glass, smudged glass, and a variety of other well tools employed by other DP's.....one i really liked was when i worked with someone that took a lighted sterno can and we held it just under and in front of the lens to get a blur effect.

Hello Patrick,

Since you did al those great videos for Resolve. It is worth a shot to help you out ;)
I just tried this:

- Create comp in After Effects
- Place your footage in the comp
- Duplicate that layer
- Make the top Layer 3D
- Rotate the top Layer about -36 Degrees on X
- Mask the top Layer so you only have the bottom part (Or part you desire, but to copy the effect from your examples the bottom part)
- Feather the mask
- Create a Camera (I created a 35mm one.. maybe other cameras give different effects)
- OK the most important part... DOF turn your DOF on for your camera, and fool around with the FStop.. give it a very low value. 0.1 for starters...

Now you should be getting a start for 'your effect'

Play around with: Blur level and Fstop in camera settings. And rotation and position for tuning your effect...

Promo I shot with zero budget and the singer not really wanting to be shown too much. All effects the waving in front of the camera type. I used a piece of patterned gauze, a close-up lens waved in front of the camera (had better effects with an old spectacle lens since) and a prism in front of the camera. I also at times had an old UV filter which I scratched up and drew lines on in blue sharpie to get some funk going on.
