  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

African Nature Showreel

I will post here when we are back. Currently gearing up big time, will be super fun to use it (but maybe not carry it).
Aha, that is very interesting with the sunken hide, that is why it looks so magical!
Redcine is pretty good, but the key thing in Davinci is that you can select areas so you san cay "make the head brighter, with more contrast and sharper" so that it pops out. Its a fun program. I did grade in davinci with a pretty slow computer. If you drop the resolution to quarter res then you can do it on a 4 year old Apple Laptop (but with some swearing).

Another tip is I noticed the saturation is shifting between the images a bit much. Normally you want the amount of saturation to be fairly constant over time. It can change, but not usually clip by clip unless you have a special reason. To fix this you can basically make sure to make some shots a bit more saturated before other very saturated shots are coming.
The edit I thought was really nice and the images are superb!

Andreas

Thanks Andreas, I've downloaded the free version of DaVinci. Will give it a try as soon as I find the time.

Great work Robert! I'm wondering about your setup and technic to have this perfect focusing with such a long tele lens.

Thanks Marc. I'm mostly shooting from hides or the ground on a tripod or vehicles using a suction mount. I don't use a follow focus, I just pull directly on the lens. My Sigma 300-800 is not ideal for this, since the focus throw is so short, but I'm getting the hang of it. When I have the time and the subject is not moving too much, I sometimes use the autofocus function. To be honest, I often miss critical focus and I'm looking at ways to improve my system (different lens, manual ff, rtmotion receiver with thumb wheel, etc).

Robert, thanks for your informations about focusing.I'm in the same way, digging further to improve my system.I shoot wildlife and action sports during my free time as you do.
And it's the beginning with Red for me.I'm going to try different solutions and I'll tell you when I find.I think rtmotion or manual focus (which lens?) and perhaps to "hire" my wife as focus puller!

absolutely loved the footage, i just don't really dig the watermark.

i like the grade, and there are some nice moments in the edit too. really lovely. the high resolution just does wonders for wildlife images. thanks for sharing.

That was absolutely beautiful Robert, well done.

Thanks Bobby!

Thanks Scott. I think I will reduce the size of the watermark drastically - I edited it on a 13" laptop and it didn't look too obtrusive when viewed at that size, but on a larger screen, it does become a bit obtrusive.
