  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Advise on octocopter

@Zeb, sounds crazy, but the DJI Ground Station app is actually capable of doing such a thing in your video.

@Dan, the DJI Zenmuse Z15-BMPCC gimbal was just released not long ago, but would require at least an S800 (hexacoptor) to carry the payload of the camera w/ the 3-axis gimbal. There are a bunch of simulator softwares on the net. Once again though, not only is the Phantom2 an amazing aerial imaging capturing device, it's also a really good flight training tool.

Must say Willis, DJI is doing some amazing things. Can't wait for a 4k version of the Phantom vision, but wish it can be upgraded to a 4k version when that day comes. I've been thinking about getting one, but with the iPad controls and viewing, it more interesting then the Go Pro version. Go pro is likely to go all 4k next model. Mind you go pros suck for this sort of thing. Jello anyone

I totally agree with Willis that a Phantom with H3-3D or 2D is the best way to start practicing using an Aerial camera Platform.

Do LOTS of reading over at RCGroups and DIYdrones - both of them have their own biases and plenty of salty banter to go around, but there are also a lot of gems of knowledge to be mined from some very knowledgeable and friendly people (just like here).

Can't go wrong with a Phantom - even if it's just for fun :)

So the go pro and the vision plus are the only cameras that can fly with a phantom 2 and g3 3d? How does one achieve slomo with the gopro or vision plus or is that a post effect? Does the vision plus look less video like than the gopro. Can one shoot raw for extended periods of time in the vision plus? Are there external lens attachments to get away from the fish eye look?

GoPro shoots 1080/60p and 720/120p

To me, the GoPro is better, in every respect, than the vision cam.

You can buy non fish eye lenses from companies like rage cams or you can shoot in narrow mode. You could also remove the fisheye effect pretty well in after effects using the optics compensation filter.

Also, their is a hack to fix the GoPro into have exposure lock:

My simple advice the first 5 kopters that you buy (and for sure will crash) make sure they where not to expansive or I think you will loose interest.

The phantoms are great for practicing and when you can fly that thing without any hesitation blindfolded, well then you still are quite far from flying commercially with an epic :)

I tried the other way so I know :)

Anything below a Phantom that you would recommend for practice...guess wouldn't even have to have a camera but just something to learn to fly..?

I actually had one of those iphone styrofoam droids... took me about a week before it was none recoverable/coverd in super glue and a few propellers replaced. I think that to start with atlast gives you the sensation. even if it just cost a couple of hundred dollars you still get nervous when you loose control or the wind starts to push etc. After flying such toy outdoors Its easy to emagine how it would feel when you ad on "epic money" and i think its almost impossible to get a fully covering insurance more than for liability. Basicaly when you crash a big droid with an epic, lens etc. its going to be expansive. For reference one of the best RC pilots here in sweden has crashed over 100 times... so no its not just a bigginer problem i think:)
